Title: MIDSOMAR (2019)
Post by: indianasmith on July 12, 2019, 08:36:27 AM
I went with my friend Lloyd to see this last night.  He and I saw HEREDITARY in the theaters last year, and both enjoyed it, so we figured this one from the same director might be fun.

Well, "fun" isn't exactly the appropriate term here . . . .  "bizarre."  "Disturbing."  "Cringeworthy."  "Fascinating."

Those terms pretty well sum up this strange movie about a group of American grad students who travel with an exchange student to Sweden to attend a festival at his home village/commune.  Things get steadily stranger from  there, as this is no normal May-fest!  Extreme gore, bizarre rituals, mysterious disappearances, and perhaps the most cringey sex scene in the history of sex scenes make this a VERY strange movie experience!  In the end, I am not entirely sure what the POINT of the ritual was.  That's really my only gripe; there could have been a better explanation at the end. 4/5

Perhaps this is getting spoilery... but I think we understand the general idea of pagan sacrifices to ensure prosperity in the future. I don't think the exact details of the rituals should matter that much, except to anthropologists. It's more chilling when we sense there's a meaning behind the individual elements of such a ritual, but we don't fully understand it.

That said this article might help: https://screenrant.com/midsommar-movie-ending-explained-may-queen-meaning/

I saw the poster in my local cinema over the weekend: a bit disturbing.
