Title: Cool world. Post by: Svengoolie 3 on August 19, 2019, 08:09:43 PM OK, lots of people thought it sucked, some liked it. What do people here think?
Title: Re: Cool world. Post by: retrorussell on August 19, 2019, 09:13:00 PM One of the top 5 worst movies I've ever seen. One of those movies that you might think for just a second that "maybe it wasn't that bad", and then automatically you think "YES! YES, IT REALLY WAS!". Soul-sucking, gut-punching, nut-kicking, shin-bashing awful. And I had low expectations going in.

I never really saw it as any more bad than a lot of semi fantasy movies. Burn then again I didn't think 'catwoman' was that bad either. But man I sure thought batman and robin was awful!!! I can't bring myself to say the movie was bad, because it was entertaining, but it was entertaining like watching a freak show. Title: Re: Cool world. Post by: WingedSerpent on August 20, 2019, 05:27:37 PM I kind of liked it. I like the look of traditional 2D animation and live action mixing together. Rather then call it a bad movie, it feels more like a failed experiment.
This movie had a lot of studio interference. They wanted a disney-esque Who framed Roger Rabbit clone-which is basically what they got- when Ralph Bakshi's original idea was much darker and more of a murder/noir story involving a toon/human hybrid. https://animationresources.org/biography-louise-zingarelli/ (https://animationresources.org/biography-louise-zingarelli/) Title: Re: Cool world. Post by: FatFreddysCat on August 20, 2019, 07:51:11 PM I just revisited Cool World on TUBI-TV a couple of weeks ago. It was probably the 3rd or 4th time I've seen it over the years. When I posted about it in the "recent viewings" thread I believe I said that it was "a mess, but an interesting mess."
I actually saw it during its theatrical run -- considering its quick fade from theaters, I may be one of only a few dozen people who can say that (haha). At the time I was really into animation (sparked by seeing Who Framed Roger Rabbit several times a few years earlier) so I enjoyed Cool World's visuals but the story was a muddle. I remember going to see it with my buddy Dave, another cartoon buff, and I think there were maybe five other people in the theater, besides us -- on its opening weekend. We were like "This doesn't bode well," haha. I've read that Ralph Bakshi had originally envisioned Cool World as a horror film about a cartoonist being stalked by one of his abandoned creations. Somewhere along the way the script was heavily re-written (without Bakshi's knowledge or consent). Legend has it that when the producer gave Bakshi the "new" screenplay, Ralph punched him right in the mouth. I guess I actually kinda like it, even though it's not what I would consider a great film by any means. It's got a great early '90s techno/industrial rock soundtrack, too. I could watch this clip all day: Error 404 (Not Found)!!1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvAM8mZnnCw&t=15s#) Title: Re: Cool world. Post by: BoyScoutKevin on August 21, 2019, 07:42:47 PM One of the few films, if not the only film that put me to sleep, while I was watching it in the cinema. And that is about the only thing I can remember about it, except Gabriel Byrne was in it.
