It's Ray Bradbury's 99th birthday. In memorium I bring up his classic film,  Fahrenheit 451.

Most people don't know it but it was a warning about people choosing to not read books in favor of watching tv. And the government being in favor of it as stupid population is easier to control.

All in all i'd  say it was sadly accurate....

Good stories don't make good movies all the time. I thought the book was great- the movie was boring.

Speaking of Bradbury movies how about "something wicked this way comes"?

One prescient thing about Bradbury's cautionary tales was that the oppressive censorship began not from a desire to smother the populace but in order to protect it from offensive materials. There's a lesson there. Free speech functions best when society has thick skin.

Truth be told, though I consider myself a Bradbury fan, I didn't care much for either the book or movie version of F451.

I tried to read the book several times in high school/college but I was never able to make it all the way thru -- it was too dry.

I saw the movie a few years ago and it didnt knock my sox off but it was watchable. Julie Christie was smokin' hot back then.

I tried to re-read Dandilion Wine a while back, and I almost choked on the sugar.
Back when I was a teenager, I thought he was peanut butter and jelly.

Anyone here read the martian Chronicles?

I kinda liked the tv miniseries, except now I have a hard time dealing with rock Hudson in it. I find him hard to watch.


And no,  not  because he was gay! Because he knew he had a largely unknown at the time and deadly disease that was communicable and kissed an actress without telling her he had a deadly disease that  was communicable and letting her choose to do the kiss scene or not. That  was despicable!

Yeah, The Martian Chronicles is probably my favorite Bradbury book.

If it makes you feel better, Sven, I doubt Rock Hudson enjoyed kissing her.

I don't think at the time Rock knew alot about AIDS. No one did. I was around back then. AIDS was a mystery.

I've never seen the film.  I read RAY BRADBURY's novel FARENHEIT 451.  


As for ROCK HUDSON, I gather he was a really nice likeable guy.  The actress you refer to is LINDA EVANS and his appearance on DYNASTY.  I never cared for his acting.  

He knew he had a serious disease that was harming him and was largely unknown. Kissing her without telling her was a heinous act that endangered her life without her consent.

Book was great, but the film didn’t capture the right feeling.

There was a teleplay in the 80’s, where Bradbury added a few scenes. And there was a remake a few years ago. And an unofficial teleplay made in the ‘50’s, The Beat of a Different Drummer.

I’d like to see those other versions.
