Post by: Flangepart on April 03, 2001, 05:39:23 PM In other words, the sequence of events in an action picture is predictable......First the Hero knocks off the NPC's..uh,low level thugs...then he does in the third and second in command...then , and only then, does he get to play "Pin the Nitroglcyrin on Blofeld" . Does anyone ever recall an action picture, or any other film, that deliberatly messed with the audience expectations, regards this mantra? I mean, did anyone ever screw with the conventions ...as would happen with an RPG? In a game, the sequence is not dependable, as decisions by the G.M.( think B.A. Felton)...and the players can change the events any time. On a serious note, Andrew knows the importance of training the troops to take over the mission, if the Lt., Sargent, Or Corpral are out of the fight. In short, what do the bad guys do if Blofeld gets eten by his own piranas, BEFORE he starts the destruct sequance on the Dohickey of doom...I like that line!...Abby, i think your a gamer, what do you guys think about all this?

Post by: Josh Leman on April 03, 2001, 07:02:15 PM Well, speaking of Blofeld, there's some pretty unpredictable stuff in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the forgotten Bond movie starring George Lazenby. Yeah, it generally follows the sequence of events you lay out, but the ending is WAY out of left field. There has never been, and will never be, anything like it in any other Bond movie. Ever.
I can think of some other movies that don't perfectly follow that formula, though they're generally not straight action films. Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai is a good example--the mob leader dies earlier than several of his chief henchmen. Also in Homer's Odyssey, and in most film versions, the first of the suitors to get killed is the arrogant pseudo-leader. In the "negotiation" scene of The Fifth Element, Bruce Willis kills the leader of those dog-faced aliens without hurting any of the henchmen standing around. But I guess I can't think of any Rambo - Bond - Mission: Impossible type movies where the evil leader dies before his thugs. Title: Re: You know where this is going, don't you Mr Bond...
