Title: COMIC BOOKS
Post by: RCMerchant on December 14, 2019, 05:27:21 AM
Do you like comics?

I buy alot of Sgt.Fury comics from the 60's.
Back when I was a kid, I bought comics every chance I had. That and monster movie mags...I still do.

I'm looking at this one now.

I know it's odd that I like war comics I reckon- but I do. I have lots of Sgt.Fury and Sgt.Rock.

I guess I outgrew comic books. They were great when I was a kid. I think the last comic book I bought was Superman vs. Muhammad Ali.
That said, I'd be interested in reading vintage comic books. When I was in Paris (France) years ago we went to some book store of sort. There I found a book with a collection of comic book/art by some French comic book writer that illustrated his work from the late 1960s to 1970s. It was pulp/horror/sleaze with a touch of S&M. Would've been a great coffee table book. I still regret not buying it.

I have a lot of British comics from the 80's and 90's, which alas don't have a lot of collectors value but I like them. Got several collections of older collected works, mostly horror type comic strips like Tale of the Zombie or Hookjaw. I like to keep an eye out for something with Axl Pressbutton being reissued but no joy so far.

Been reading comics since about the mid-to-late 90's.  (A time when a lot of people say comics where at their worst).

Mostly super heroes, especially Green Lantern.

I do like Eric Powell's The Goon and his recent series Hillbilly, which can be described as Conan the Barbarian set in early 19th century Appalachia.

Love comics.

Mostly into Marvel titles.  Doctor Strange, Howard the Duck, Hulk.

The Mask comic from Dark Horse was insane, loved that.

Ninja Turtles.  A whole bunch of comics really.

I love comics. I have about 12 long boxes full of them (actually, a very small collection compared to most collectors). My sweet spot is comics that were published prior to 1990 (most of my collection is 1960s and 70s). I prefer Marvel, but I've been building a pretty decent DC collection in recent years: Justice League of America, Green Lantern, The Flash, The Atom, Action, Superman, Batman, Detective, Brave and the Bold, Teen Titans, Phantom Stranger . . . just about anything.

I'm mostly a Marvel guy and the 80s and 90s were my era.  I really started getting out of it about the time they launched the New Avengers and everything turned into decompressed events.

Yea I have some comics. I need to get back into reading Neil Gaiman's Sandman series.
Been reading comics since about the mid-to-late 90's.  (A time when a lot of people say comics where at their worst).

It's usually the early to mid 90's that they were at their worst imo. For Marvel it was longer, DC got lucky with some of the best stories coming from the mid to late 90's. Image Comics was the new kid in town, and it's flagship comic, Youngblood, had so many delays between issues that it became a joke.

Sweet finds!

But yes, I love comics.

These days I read a lot of graphic novels and comic book collections.

I really love Swamp Thing, both vintage and when Alan Moore took over. Also the new horror/supernatural series, Gideon Falls is really good. I also really enjoy Vampirella, any era of that one really, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Some of my favorite graphic novels are Black Hole, The Watchmen, and Maus.

I recently finished a read through of ... most of the original Hellblazer series.

Wonderful stuff, except for the final few years when they introduced a spunky young girl with blue hair as a new love interested and had John marry her.  The series went straight to hell at that point, and not like the good times when the characters would actually go to hell.

So I skipped ahead to the final issue.  I've checked multiple message boards and nobody can quite figure out what happened in that issue.

Oh well.

I just started re-reading my Amazing Adventures: War of the Worlds/Killraven collection again. It started out as a great series, but the excitement fizzled out and they never even put any closure to the story. The series just ended with a strange, surreal final issue.

These days I read a lot of graphic novels and comic book collections.

I scored this one last week when the local comic store finally opened up after over a month because of our local COVID-19 "hunker down" order by the mayor. I could have ordered it for $9 less on Amazon, but I paid $30 to support the local small business instead; plus I didn't have to wait for shipping when I was holding it in my hands at the store.  :cheers:

In late July I ordered $560 worth of Amazing Spider-Man comics from an online retailer. The package seemed to be taking longer than expected to arrive so I checked the USPS tracking information. There was a message that said the package could not be delivered or returned to the sender and was being sent to the dead mail office. I contacted the seller and he said the post office destroyed the package in a mail sorting machine. I got a full refund, but the thought of those comics being destroyed is horrifying.

I'm bidding on these 4 books at the moment- my max is $100.
A Vampi #1 can go for well over 600 bucks... this is as high as I go. High as I ever bid on comics. But it's a Vampi #!!
I think I may have a good chance of winning, because the guy selling is not a comic book dealer. So the auction is going under the radar.

And # 7 and #11 go for at least 60 a piece.
I upped my bid to $200- but I think I'm going to win it by less then $50.

I just bought this-
from 1965-

(https://i.imgur.com/P11XmM7.png) (https://lunapic.com)

Back in 1970, we moved into an old farmhouse, and there was an old school desk in the upstairs bedroom, which had a pull out drawer underneath the chair. It was full of old DC comics from the 50's and early 60's.
Like Burgo, I prefer Marvel comics (big fan of Sgt.Rock, though); this is a nice flashback.

Unfortunately, it's from the 80's revival by Eclipse comics. Too much cussing for my tastes, but it has a dinosaur on the cover, so that's nice.  :smile:

This one: Pic (https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=BxmLVHar&id=A7482C7067939E29C2E9FE37DD1EE379AA731A81&thid=OIP.BxmLVHarNCDZTGXk4bc0AAAAAA&mediaurl=https%3a%2f%2fi.ebayimg.com%2fimages%2fg%2flqUAAOSwFOld0rJ2%2fs-l300.jpg&exph=300&expw=225&q=eclipse+comics+airboy&simid=608053291014030324&ck=F2D35BFEE93320CE9EE231EB0DBF355F&selectedIndex=59&qpvt=eclipse+comics+airboy&FORM=IRPRST&ajaxhist=0)

From what I've read so far the dinosaur doesn't have much bearing on the plot. :/

Thanks guys. But sometimes I feel like I'm burning money on stuff I don't need.
I pay all the bills, cook all the food- I dunno. I always feel guilty when I buy something.
But I keep doing it so- f**k it.  :lookingup:

If you have taken care of the essentials in life why should you feel bad about getting some extras?

^ have quite a few Atlas Kirby/ Ditko giant monster comics from the late 50's, early 60's.- all in horrible shape Not the 70's reprints (though I have some of them too).

Been trying to find this one at a reasonable price. Cost me $16.00 plus postage.

Hey there, RCMerchant - congrats on the CREEPY 15! I have been getting into CREEPY and EERIE lately and would love to pick up a couple of Corben issues... what's a realistic price range lately (if $16 is a steal)?

Title: Re: COMIC BOOKS
Post by: RCMerchant on August 02, 2021, 11:41:11 AM
It all depends on the issue. 70's Creepy's with Corben art go for about-roughly- $20.00 . It's all about condition too.
Happy hunting! I have 100's of comic mags and 60's and 70's monster mags, most in bad shape- but I don't worry about condition too much.

I just bought this one, with Corben and John Severin art ( 2 favorites), for $19 bucks- and that was after shipping costs.

Nice job!

I was out of collecting for a long time - a LONG time - and am still trying to work up my dander to make routinely large purchases, which for me are uhh over $10!  :lookingup:    I'll happily drop tons of cash on dollar bin books but somehow I'm too cheap to invest in comics that are actually valuable. Managed to pick up a NEARLY complete run of KAMANDI here and there over the past three months (only missing three issues now), and mostly for under ten bucks. Dropped $18 on a NM #1, and somehow $20 and $21 respectively on the oddly harder-to-find #2 and #3. I wouldn't do that for just anyone, but it's Kirby's KAMANDI! Those are the most expensive purchases I've made for single issues in years.

I seem to recall spending in that neighborhood for HARBINGER 2 + 3 as a kid in the early 90s, and might have even dropped $35 on a HARBINGER #1, which I regretted for a decade or so, yet now it seems like a good buy again.

But every time I ogle an UNCANNY X-MEN 129 on Ebay, the bidding goes way over $200 and my eyes roll back in my head.......  :bluesad:

Still, vintage Corben seems worth a few tens...

I'm not RC (I could never live up to that standard), but here is where I buy mine:

* Mostly eBay, but I prefer "buy it now" to auctions (because I'm impatient)
* NewKadia - I've used this website for years. No auctions, just click and buy. They run daily, weekly and monthly sales (sometimes as much as 50% off, but usually 25 - 30%)
* Comic Connect - I just discovered this website a couple months ago. They have "buy it now," "make an offer" and "auction" options. The drawbacks are: 1) you may need to wait 3 weeks or more to receive your order 2) if you use a credit card, they charge a 3% fee.

I ended up buying 36 Silver and Bronze Age issues of:

* Action Comics
* Archie at Riverdale High
* Batman
* Brave and the Bold
* Challengers of the Unknown
* Flash
* Green Lantern
* House of Mystery
* House of Secrets
* Justice, Inc.
* Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth
* Life with Archie
* Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane
* Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen
* Tales to Astonish
* Thor
* Weird War Tales
* World's Finest

I have plenty to keep me busy for awhile.

Quote
A near mint condition copy of a 1941 comic featuring the first appearance of Captain America has been sold for over three million US dollars (£2.3 million) at auction.

The sale makes the Captain America Comics No 1 one of the top five most valuable comic books in the world.

The edition features the well-known Marvel superhero, played by Chris Evans in the film franchise, punching Adolf Hitler in the face on its cover.

It also introduces readers to Captain America’s sidekick Bucky, played by Sebastian Stan, and their Nazi nemesis Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving.

The final sale price was 3,120,000 US dollars (£2.4 million), and the item was sold as part of Heritage Auctions’ comic and comic art events in Texas.
At the same auction a CGC NM-9.2 copy of the Fantastic Four’s 1961 debut sold for 1.5 million US dollars (£1.1 million) (Heritage Auctions/PA)

It may be my native Celtic gloom peering out but it has felt to me for a long time now that the comics industry is in a serious gully as far as quality and imagination. I think that's afflicting a lot of other fields in the entertainment industry but with comics it feels particularly, dismally true.

One example, they ended Hellblazer a decade or so ago in the midst of a great run, then brought it back as this train wreck of woke awfulness.

That's just one case but it's indicative of what I've seen among graphic novel offerings for most of the last ten or fifteen years.

We went through a golden age in the late-20th century and even for a while in this century comics rode on momentum, and then it is like the bottom fell out of creativity. I have looked hard to find something new to interest me and I haven't found much, and what I have tried to delve into hasn't matched the quality of a generation ago when we had The Sandmen, The Watchmen, Sin City, Ghost World, Hellblazer, The Cartoon History of the World, Maus, and so many other great series either having just wrapped up a good run, or they were still ongoing at the same time.

I don't read super hero comics, never have no matter how many times people have tried to push Batman on me, so maybe that part of the field is doing great, I have no idea. But as far as graphic novels that radiate their sheer brilliance....it's been a long time since I've encountered anything new or relatively new that has impressed me.

I know I grew up amid a once-in-a-lifetime run of freakish greatness in the field, but I hope things turn around eventually and some new blood comes in with talent to bring out what comics can be.

And by the way, in my day we had to trudge barefoot seven miles through hip-deep snow to get to comic shops!

Last week a local comic store put out boxes and boxes of comics for $1.00 each. They much have had a few thousand comics in those boxes. I ended up buying just over 50 comics from the 1980s and early 1990s (that's sort of my usual cut-off point because I think comics went drastically downhill after that). They are all in excellent condition. Most of the ones I got were SUPERMAN or ACTION COMICS (starring Superman). But I also got 1 FANTASTIC FOUR, 1 EVERYTHING'S ARCHIE and a few IRON MAN. I didn't have time to look through all the boxes (which probably would have taken about 3 hours if I wanted to do a thorough job), so I probably missed out on a lot of good stuff.

I finally decided to move my comic boxes off the floor in a spare bedroom. I bought 4 Origami foldable shelving units for the basement. Each one has 4 shelves that can hold up to 250 pounds (much less if you put the wheels on, but I'm not using the wheels). I'm using the bottom 3 shelves of each unit for comic book boxes and I'll use the top shelves for some of my board games as I'm completely out of shelf space in the spare bedroom.

The Origami units are great. They come already assembled (except the wheels) and are folded on hinges. You just remove them from the packing box, unfold them and snap 2 locking clasps into place. It takes less than a minute to set up each one. Which is great for me because I hate assembling things.
