Title: ANIMATED FILMS you LOVE
Post by: Allhallowsday on March 22, 2020, 11:52:57 AM
I watched THE SECRET OF NIMH (1982) last night.  Though it's an animated story with talking animals, and hence implausible aside from its implausibility, I still like it a lot.  JOHN CARRADINE voices The Great Owl and is wonderful in the part.

My oldest's middle name is Cora, and I tell people it was as close to Coraline as I was allowed to get. (Truthfully it's a family name on her father's side but I like my account better.)

FANTASTIC PLANET (1973) I remember this trailer on the TV, briefly, but I didn't see the film for at least another 10 years; I'm sure I've got a copy on VHS.   :teddyr:

WOW! I'd never heard of that (and now must see it) but that's how my thoughts look, all the time.

Even though it's not entirely animated, most of it is, and Powers of Ten is another short film that does cool things to my mind:

One worth checking out is Royal Space Force (1987) aka Wings of Honneamise (1987). Imagine The Right Stuff (1983) mixed with a dash of Blade Runner (1982) minus the Replicants, a touch of Witness (1985) minus the Amish and crooked cops, and maybe a smidgen of Gone With The Wind (1939) but with a steampunk war backdrop instead of the American Civil War, and you might get an idea of what this movie is about before watching it. The animation hasn't aged very well over the past 33 years, coming across as rather choppy, but the artwork is still fantastic and it's all hand-drawn with not a hint of CGI which wasn't really in use all that much in 1980s cinema, so you can really appreciate all of the effort that went into making this movie.

Transformers: The Movie (1986) and GI Joe: The Movie (1987). I watched these so many times as a kid. I just re-watched the Joe movie for the millionth time or so a little bit ago. I concluded my series re-watch with it on Blu-ray. I plan to watch Transformers: The Movie sometime fairly soon, but not until I get to that point in my re-watch of the series.

Guilty pleasure; even amongst Pokémon fans this film is considered poor. But I like it; I like it more than the 1st movie, which I grew up with:

A Nightmare before Christmas
Twice Upon a Time

I totally forgot about TWICE UPON A TIME!   Its a fun animated movie.

As for my list:

Sleeping Beauty
Mulan
Pinocchio
Snow White
Nightmare Before Christmas
Fantasia
Coraline
Fantastic Planet
Feliday
Heavy Metal (kinda dated and cheesy, but still fun)
Curse of the Wererabbit
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
Team America (f**k yeah!)
Despicable Me
Marquis (1989.. its a mostly forgotten film. Its more full size puppets than animation..but I count it as "animated" all the same. Plus, it's now on Youtube!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTB5_eNhOZw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTB5_eNhOZw) )

Yesterday in the early afternoon, TCM had FANTASTIC PLANET (1974) on... in the original French, and I think the cut of the film was slightly different.
