That job I applied for: I was passed over for it in favor of someone who is at least thirty years younger than me, non Caucasian and female. Also this person knows maybe a quarter of what I do and has not been mentored as I was.

I understand that the employment laws in my country preclude Caucasian males from employment but the law doesn't stop such people from applying and it doesn't stop the awful feeling in my gut right now: it's 3pm here and I don't see myself sleeping tonight.

Time to retire, I think although God knows what I am going to do with myself if I do.

Aw Trev!  So disappointing.   Sounds like you were both overqualified and the wrong demographic.  Stinks on both counts. 

Have a pizza with some turtles and regroup.  You are still Trevor T-for-trouble Moses and that is a great thing whether potential employers appreciate it or not!

Obviously the people that run that place don't know what they're doing.  Do you really want to work for a place where the people in charge are clueless?

Sorry to hear that Trev. Keep trying, put aside this temporary disappointment. You say you love your job, if so, you wouldn't want to lose that. 

I know it feels like a kick in the teeth but hang in there Trev.

I am seriously thinking about seeing the year out and then quitting in January: there must be something else I can do with my life besides having all my dreams destroyed because of stupid laws that don't accurately promote people who can do the job, other than people who are the correct gender and race.

The last time I felt this bad was when my Dad died.

Quitting a job you love would be cutting off your nose to spite your face.  It's only a setback, and you understand.  Bad feelings never help, and only injure the one who feels them.  Perhaps others are foolish; don't you be.  You are a survivor.  You are a lucky man.  Hold your head up proudly. 

Thanks for the nice words and I know you mean them. I was really looking forward to going back to work this week - my mentor said it would possibly be on 1 July - but now I actually don't care when I return.

When I return, I will be resigning from my Union - I've been with them since 1990 -  as they are hopeless and will join another one: maybe they can take up my case as I am not letting this BS stand.

That's why I had to get out of Volunteer radio...

Seemed like every damned year, history would repeat it'self, but it just got especially cliquish those last two or three years I was doing it.

i'm so sorry trev. i think you should definitely get a new union and fight this tooth and nail. and everyone is right, you are OUR mighty trev, don't let this ruin your love for the job you have while you fight that good fight, okay? uncle zombie WILL prevail somehow!

Got little or no sleep last night, even my landlord asked me what was wrong when she visited this morning, I asked why, she said "You look terrible" and I didn't explain further other than saying that I had a bad night.

You don't want to end up being broke.

I would suggest that you keep your job, but maybe start looking for somewhere else at the same time? When you find somewhere else, walk away from this job.

Update your resume & start passing it out, just try not to be negative when describing your situation to perspective employers.

So sorry! I really wish you the best.  Working in HR, I see this happen from time to time and I've seen it blow up in people's faces.

With the laws as they are now, there is no chance for me to get another job locally.

I was supposed to go back to work yesterday - that was the rumor anyway - but we've been told to hang on a bit.

Things are going to be awkward to say the least when I return so the longer I can stay away the better: maybe the hurt will have subsided a bit by the time I do return.

I can retire at 55 (three years from now) but I don't know if I should.

I would suggest just do the job you enjoy- and continue. It's not the end of the world.

I spoke to my mentor this morning regarding the post I applied for and it seems the consensus of the panel was that I am a fit candidate for being a resident film historian but not a preservationist. Several other reasons were given but I still believe I was passed over for the post due to apartheid style racist laws which favour race and gender over ability.

I admit that my mentor looked a little shocked when I said I will be taking early retirement in three years.

In SA, if you are white and male, the employment laws are against you as the laws state that preference of employment will be given to female black African candidates, no matter if they have no qualifications for the job. This is why so many female govt. ministers have been found incapable of doing their work correctly without blaming the pre 1994 laws.

I knew this going in for the job but I still gave it my best shot: guess it wasn't good enough.

So it's reverse racism? They are over compensating?

All jobs want new blood. I worked at a factory for 30 years- I was a foreman too. But they go for young blood.

Not reading too much into it at all: in 1996, all the Caucasian staff members at my work got called in as a group and we were told to our faces that we were, as so called pale males, "undesirable elements" now that apartheid had gone and were told that we either needed to get with the program or leave. I was raised in a non racial household and this made me very angry. I told the senior staffer to go f*** herself as she didn't know me. She ended up leaving "because of work related stress" and I was the only one who stayed.

I apoligize Trevor,  if I said anything offensive. I don't live in South Africa, nor do I know your situation beyond what you say here.

Some Americans find it hard to accept that the very thing that they want to happen in the United States of America, land of the "free", is considered as racist in other countries. But then again, most uncultured Americans that have never set foot outside of the country except for maybe a trip to Canada to score some stronger beer are even aware of the laws of other countries in the first place.

They also said I did not answer the questions in the manner that would lead them to think I was a good candidate for the job? One of the questions they asked was "Name the stages of film production" which I challenged, saying that has nothing to to with film archiving but the stages are pre-production, production, post production and release (and we all know that)

No, this was all total BS and my interview was just a box check, nothing more.

My mentor did tell me that the Chief Director - part of the panel - was very impressed with my knowledge: being impressed by someone's knowledge doesn't put money in my wallet or food on my table.
