Title: Halloween Movie Watching list
Post by: chainsaw midget on October 01, 2020, 07:44:39 PM
Here's my goal for the season.

Every day this October, I will watch a Halloween movie (I don't want to say horror movie, because Sci-fi and monster themed comedies are just as likely.)  To up the ante a little bit, each one will be a movie I have never seen before.  Sadly this means I'm going to have to avoid a lot of the classics and rely on newer stuff, but the fact that I don't know what I'm in for makes it all the more interesting.

Tonight's movie...  The Invisible Man.

The movie re-imagines the Invisible Man as an abusive manipulative stalker.  When his girlfriend finally manages to escape from he, he sets out to make her pay by ruining her life and making everyone around her think she's crazy.  It also updates the style of invisibility taking away the "invisibility formula" and replacing it with a special suit composed entirely of cameras.  They never bother to explain how that works, but it doesn't matter.

I have to say, this movie was uncomfortably unnerving at parts.  It's the kind of thing that just gives you a knot in your stomach.  The fact that they can do this with a wide shot of a room where nothing is even moving just proves how good the guys who made this movie are.

This is the kind of movie they should have started the "Dark Universe" with.

Tonight's movie

The Fantasy Island reboot
(https://i.imgur.com/ZiD6sjX.jpg?1)

It doesn't quite feel right calling this a horror movie.  I hate to be one of those guys that says "it's not a horro movie, its _____," but this really doesn't feel like it needs the horror title.

Maybe calling it a dark thriller would work better.  It's certain interesting with a lot of nice twists and turns and the guy that plays Mr. Roarke does a much better job than i would have expected.

It's not like the TV show didn't dabble in it's share of dark fantasies once in a while either.

It's worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.
(Although it does have a lack of midgets in white suits.)

Wacko.

On the night of the Halloween Prom a young girl watched her sister get killed by a man wearing a pumpkin on his head using a landmower.  Now, 13 years later, a bitter slob worn out detective is convinced that the killer is going to return.

But who could it be?  The pervy janitor?  That weird stranger that's running around town?  Her equally pervy doctor father?  Her mama's boy boyfriend Norman?  Her deranged Santiac brother Damien?  That guy who just escaped from the mental institution and is running around town wearing nothing but boots and a trenchcoat?  These are only a few of the weird characters at Alfred Hitchock High.

The movie is by no means great but it's a nice low budget silly romp, the kind you don't see much of anymore.  It's also Andrew Dice Clay's first movie, he plays the Travolta like highschool cool guy.  Joe Don Baker also stars.  he plays pretty much the exact character the MST3K cast always make fun of him for being.

Somehow I had never seen a Comedy of Terrors before.

How I managed to miss a movie with Vincent Price AND Boris Karloff, I just don't know.  Adding Peter Lorre and  Basil Rathbone to the mix is just icing on the cake.

One line I especially loved from Comedy of Terrors is when Prince calls Lorre a "confessed bank robber."  Lorre replies "I never confessed.  They just proved it."

A girl gets kidnapped by a deranged killer that wants to use her to live out his highschool prom fantasy.  When her family finds him, they get bloody revenge.  That's the basic plot, but it's not nearly as dark as it sounds.  It's actually pretty light hearted for the most part, almost as much a dark comedy as it is horror, although Otis himself can come off as super creepy.  There's also some really nice twists that i don't want to spoil.

After watching it though, I had the feeling that I might have actually seen it before, so maybe it shouldn't count as on my "never saw this one before" list.

Shut up.  I like Scooby Doo.

This one features Elvira, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Batman's old enemy The Scarecrow (oddly enough, no Batman) and an entire army of pumpkin monsters.

At one point the gang mentions that they spent last Halloween tracking down The Ghosts of the Three Stooges.  I wish we could have got that movie.

Nothing supernatural, no monsters, no evil serial killers.  This movie just gives us some of the nastiest Florida weather possible (a hurricane and flooding) and even nastier alligators.  I'd actually been meaning to see this one since I first heard about it but only just now got around to it and I have to say it wasn't a disappointment.

I found this one by accident and it was a treat.

The WNUF Halloween Special.  It's a live broadcast from from the 80s, where a TV reporter, a priest, and two paranormal researchers investigate a haunted house as part of a Halloween special and shows the horrible things that happened to them.  The DVD includes bits of the news program that proceeded it and original commercials that aired during the program.

Okay, all of that is a lie.  It wasn't filmed until 2013 and it's about as real as the Blair Witch Project was.  It was made to look like a 80s TV program and has the film quality of a really grainy worn out VHS tape that your VCR is only a few more watches away from eating, but that's a big part of the fun.  Evenj on the case for the DVD they refer to it like it was a real broadcast with no signs it was fake.

I suppose I had to hit a looser eventually.

They definitely spared the slaughter.  I think maybe two people died out of more than a dozen characters.

A group of teenagers go on a graduation trip to a big rave party island, where somebody slowly and inefficiantly tries to kill them.  He doesn't do a good job.

This combines 80s slasher's cliches with the annoying trend of teenagers that even in a paradise at a superhot party can't stay off their damned phones and tops it all off with a dub job that Godzilla movies would be ashamed by.

They don't even both giving the killer a movie until the last little bit of the movie.
I'm going to spoil it for you.
The killer (who looks much better on the DVD cover than in the movie) is the brother of a girl that killed herself.  She killed herself after the group of friends we've been following through the whole movie invited her for a night out where a handful of them raped her.   Yeah.

And the ones that actually raped the girl survive the movie.

Feel free to skip this one.

I've never actually watched this one before, which may surprise some people.

Since I had to work late, this counts as a special midnight movie watching.

You know, there's something about the rubber suits and models that just have a charm to them that modern special effects just can't touch.

This is not the cover to the DVD I have.  This cover shows some basics of what happens, but none of the characters, car, or even the grim reaper look anything like that.

The cover I have shows a rather neat looking jack o' lantern.  I tried looking for it online but couldn't find a copy anywhere.

Regardless, I feel cheated.

This is NOT a Halloween movie.  At all.

Die Hard is more of a Christmas movie than this is a Halloween movie.  This isn't even a horror movie.  This is a a crime drama.  I'll accept drama or thriller as well, but there's no horror here on only a vauge mention of Halloween once or twice in the whole movie.

It's a pretty good crime drama and it was a wonderfully dark twist ending, but it just wasn't what I was looking for.

The Shed was a pleasant little low budget vampire movie.

It's about two teenagers that grew up in a small town and were treated like dirt, bullied, and picked on their whole lives.  Then one of therm discovers there's a vampire hiding in his grandpa's shed.  While the main characters know they have to do something about, his best friend decided to use this to finally get back at the people that have mistreated them.

The movie's not great.  There's quite a few obvious flaws including a weird cover of House of the Rising Sun, but it's a good cheap halloween flick.

What if they remade Nightmare on Elm Street and cast Jaws as Freddy?

That's basically what this movie is.

Being a Syfy movie, the CG is often rather questionable, as are elements of the plot, but they do a remarkable job at making creepy dream sequence most of the time.

A woman inherits a hotel and begins to renovate it only to find that it's built over one of the seven gates of hell.

I'm not a big Fulci fan and this isn't a movie that's going to make me one, but it was worth watching.  The characters are vague to the point of almost not having any personality at all and the plot barley existed, explaining almost nothing, but there was some great gore here along with a wonderful sense of atmosphere and an extremely chilling and bleak ending.

I can't believe I didn't hear of that one!  Sounds boring as heck.  I have no desire to watch it if they're going to use a Halloweeny title for a non-Halloweeny movie.

My daughter asked us if we could watch "Trick 'r Treat" from 2007 this past weekend.  Being a horror movie dork, I had to mess with her a little bit and ask "Which one did you say!?!? Trick R Treat or Trick or TreatS or Trick OR Treat???"  So.. we ended up watching all three -  Trick 'r Treat from 2007, Trick or Treats from 1982 and Trick or Treat from 1986.  I called it the Trick or Treat Triple Threat!!   I think she actually liked them all! I do too..  I think I like Trick or Treats the best though.  That kid is a hoot.

That sounds awesome.  I'm going to have to remember that one.   I'm fairly sure if I looked I could even come up with more "Trick or Treat" movies.  That might be something worth checking into one of these days.

Now let's get to tonight movie.

This is one of those movie covers that legitimately disturbed me when I was a little kid.  I never watched it, but just looking at the cover scared me.

Tonight I finally watched it.  I'm not disappointed at all.  It's not a scary movie, but it's a fun one.  It starts out with a DOUBLE fakeout opening and an 80s music video before we even get to see out main characters and they are dressed in some wonderfully awful 80s fashion, and from there it goes to frat pranks and a bunch of naked girls in a hot tub before finally settling in on a fantastic cheesy 80s slasher territory.

The idea of a horror movie featuring Paul Bunyan interested me.  The design of Paul is also really good.

That's about the only thing you can say is good about this movie.  The special effects are really bad.  Most of the young adults are fair at best, but this movie features maybe the worst "crazy old man" I've ever seen in a  movie as well as a jerk cop/jerk drill Sgt that we spend far too much time with.  The plot, the gore, and especially the costumes seen in the flashback, nothing in this movie really works.

Well, okay, the ending was amusing.  A group of rednecks show up with a bunch of guns out of nowhere and save the day.

Demon Wind is another movie who's VHS case stuck with me from back in the day.  You can't tell it from the picture, but it was one of those 3-d images that moves when you look at it from a different angle.

The copy I have just used an imitation of the original artwork.

As for the movie itself.... this movie is bonkers in all the right ways.

There's actually coverage of this movie on the main site (remember that?).
http://www.badmovies.org/movies/demonwind/ (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/demonwind/)

The description here makes it seem like it makes a LOT more sense than the movie actually does.  The article doesn't even mention that they kill one of the cast members TWICE.

Tremors:  A Cold Day in Hell isn't horrible, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table.  While the cover promises ice tremors or at least a snow storm, you don't even get that.  The creature effects aren't horrible, but they're  abit too CG, not Syfy level, but they could have stood to use a bit more work.

Burt Gummer is as lovable as ever though.

Nic Cage and Tommy Chong in an H.P. Lovecraft adaption.

You already know you want to watch that.

Also, if you're a big fan of Nic Cage freak-outs, this is the movie for you.

I knew the idea of adapting a story where a color that nobody had ever seen before was the bad guy wouldn't be easy, but the people that made it did a god job using over saturated bright pinks and purples to get the point across.  While at times I wish they would have gotten a main actor that wasn't quite as over the top, at the same time, Cage does do a god job of playing a person that's nowhere near right in the head anymore.

There's some great visuals on this one.  It never gets quite as disturbing as I wanted it to be, but it does put forth a lot of effort and looks wonderful.

I've been meaning to watch this one.  I was pleasantly surprised by part 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Even Pennywise, who I was really doubtful about from the early images that were released came across as great.  I mean, he's no Tim Curry but he manages to capture the evil clown thing perfectly.

Part 2 was just as good as part one.  It even managed to pull off the spider form from the original movie in a much scarier and more appealing form.

No Freddy, no Jason, no Pinhead, but I can watch... the Leprechaun!

The Raven.

I thought I had seen this before, but once I started watching it I realized I was wrong.

This is the second movie I've watched this season with Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff.  This one also has a very young Jack Nicholson.

Lorre in particular is hilarious in this movie, right from his first line where he appears as a Raven and answers Price's question with "How the hell would I know?"  Price also shows quite a bit of comedic talent here.  This movie is worth watching just for the ending magical duel alone.

Great flick.

Haunt was a lot better movie than I was expecting it to be.

It was actually genially scary and suspenseful.

The movie itself was about a group of people that went to one of those haunted house maze attractions not realizing that this one was quite lethal.  Simple set up, but it works wonderfully here.  They also did some magnificent work on the killers designs.

Mostly mediocre with a few good bits here and there.

I'm not sure I liked the idea of taking Skynet and the Terminators out of the actual story only to replace them with "Legion" and "Revs".  Actually, I don't like it.

The character Grace was also a problem.  She's the badass cyborg girl from the future... in a movie that already has old biiter and Jaded Sarah Conner and the Terminator.  Most of her badass scenes feel like she's trying too hard especially when she and Sarah seem to be competing over who's the hardest (it's Sarah.  It's always Sarah)

While I'm not a fan of the Godzilla design in this, I do love how they showed the monsters and truly monstrous and titanic.  The special effects here really make the monsters out to be these huge imposing figures that mankind has no chance against.

Okay.  I was wrong about no classic slasher I hadn't seen.  I almost forgot about the 2009 Firday the 13th reboot.  (Wow.  It's been ten years since then already?)

The movie is competent, but bland.  Jason is a lot faster, smarter, and more agile than you're used to, more like the 2 and 3rd movie than the ones that followed, but that also manages to make him feel like he has less personality than before.  The lack of the chi-chi-ha-ha doesn't help.  There's no real good moments of gore, or nudity and much of the film seems to be set in the pitch black darkness making it hard to see what was going on.  There's also no camp and no councilors in this version, which just feels weird.

After watching it though, I had the feeling that I might have actually seen it before, so maybe it shouldn't count as on my "never saw this one before" list.

The main actor is an aquaintence of mine. He was a graduate of University Of Alaska's theater program 25 years ago.  He's an amazing actor.  Wish he wuold get more movies.

I finally broke down and watched "THE WRAITH" with Charley Sheen.   I can see the cult status appeal.. but I can't appreiciate it.. its painfully bad.

Tell him I think he did a great job.

That's a heck of a list for one week.  I've never actually saw Cat in the Brain.  Is that any good?

The Descent.

This is another one I've been meaning to watch.  A group of friends go caving in an unexplored cave and end up encountering some bizarre blind animalistic cave dwellers.

This movie is dark, in all possible ways.

There's some great scenes too where characters are inches away from the monster trying their hardest to stay quiet hoping that it won't notice them.  The ending is also super bleak.

Bostin moved out of Alaska... When I hear from him again, I shall.

CAT IN THE BRAIN will put you to sleep.  It's supposed to be a comedy..according to Faluci himself.   Neither my roommate nor myself laughed onece.  We fell asleep a few times..but not laughed.

I'm not watching a movie tonight.  I just got off work, took off my Halloween costume  and it just feels like Halloween is over now.

So... after Halloween thoughts on this year's experiment...

Making a point to watch a movie a day is a lot more effort than it sounds like.
I did get to see a lot of movies that I've been putting off and found some good new ones.
On the flip side, having every movie I watched be one I hadn't seen before also meant I had to skip a lot of the classics.  It feels weird going though Halloween without Lugosi, Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, or Army of Darkness.
I'm not sure I'll do this again but if I do I'll make a point to have a wider assortment of movies picked out for next time.

Long post incoming!

My complete October watch list.

1. Z - Decent little creepy film.
2. Frankenstein - A bit of a classic, but creaky at the edges
3. From Beyond - A lot more fun than I remembered.  Goop and fun performances.
4. Sundown: Vampire in Retreat - Mildly entertaining, deserved better considering the cast though
5. Vampires VS The Bronx - Kinda fun, but didn't live up to potential.
6. Inseminoid. - Good lead performance, pretty bad movie
7. Blade - Silly nonsense.  What's not to like?
8. Hell Comes to Frogtown.  - Stupid but seomwhat entertaining
9. Daniel Isn't Real. - Two great lead performances and some good visuals, but doesn't 100% gel.  Worth a watch.
10. From A Whisper to a Scream.  - 50/50 in terms of hits, so not bad for an anthology.  Always good to see Vincent Price!
11. Feardotcom - Garbage, but it looks great, which was an interesting contrast.
12. Night of the Demon. - Awful, but the kills are amusing
13. Screamers.  - Great opening in the chopped up American version, but then it's dull
14. Burning Moon - A great climax, decent gore for the budget and more competent production than expected.  Basically trash though otherwise.
15. Dracula - Great visuals and a couple great performances don't make up for half the movie being boring and a laughably bad ending and climax.  The most overrated Universal horror film.
16. Mad Love - Terrific. - Lorre is awesome, well-written, visually strong.
17. Mortuary Collection. - Pretty fun anthology.  Clancy Brown is a great choice for the storyteller.
18. Hellmouth - A couple of great visuals, but the movie is boring.
19. Mummy - Karloff is great and it's fun for a while, but gets middling half way through
20. -Gutterballs. - Trash.  Kind of offensive trash.
21. Bats. - Just the worst.
22. Hubie Halloween. - Not that bad actually.  Kinda entertaining.
23. Mausoleum. - Really dumb, but 80s horror fans will like it.
24. Human Lanterns - Lo Lieh is amusing, and a great ending, but slow in the middle
25. Ravenous (Quebec zombie film, not wendigo one) - Really well-shot and acted, some good character moments, but plotless, slow, and pretentious.
26. Autopsy of Jane Doe - Really creepy and well-made, great dual lead performances.  A winner!
27. Priest - Awful, but I wasn't bored
28. Haunt - Great villain designs, some decent creepy moments and performances.  Solid.
29. Creature from the black lagoon - Entertaining, great creature.
30. Invisible Man (original). - Rains is great and the movie is pretty fun too.  I like it a fair bit.
31. Wolfman - The best of the original Universal Monsters films.  The lead character is actually likable, you feel bad for him, and there's actually some decent character work.  Great atmosphere, writing and performances.
32. Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight. - It's a slasher film.  Decent.  Most unique trait: most of the characters are actually likable.
