Title: Is DIE HARD a Christmas movie?
Post by: kornula on December 15, 2020, 09:04:02 PM
The debate still rages on.  Even though the story is set on friggin Christmas eve....at an office CHRISTMAS PARTY...

And, the McClains are prohibited from re uniting by Hans Gruber for their Christmas reconciliation (and so the McClain family can be together for Christmas)  some people say it is not a Christmas movie.

Die Hard is lacking christmas spirit so I voted no. Movies like Black Christmas has the spirit and the horror making it a perfect (anti) christmas movie in my opinion.

 I voted " No, you're wrong".
Still not sure if that means you're wrong or you are calling people who vote 'no' wrong. I would think the second one, being as the first 3 choices are 'yes'.
I't a mindless action movie that takes place on Christmas.
"yippie kai-yeah, motherf**ker" is not how I greet people during this time of year.
CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (1961) also has Oliver Reed's character born on Christmas and being cursed because of it.
Is it a holiday movie?
But whatever rocks your boat, man.

Die Hard is not.

But this also gives me a good opportunity to talk about a Christmas movie that nobody ever labels as a Christmas movie.

Gremlins.

The plot of the movie kicks off because a guy is looking for the perfect Christmas present for his son.
There's Christmas trees, snow plows, carolers, and a rather memorable talk about the time a character's dad played Santa, but nobody ever mentions it when they talk about Christmas movies and I think that's a shame.

Oh, yeah! Gremlins! We've watched it around Christmas before, & I would consider it a Christmas movie.

I saw GREMLINS (1984) on a hot summer July night at the drive-in when it was new.  We all loved it!  When the film opened with DARLENE LOVE "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" every person started cheering, honking car horns, joyous mayhem.  Now THAT is a Christmas movie...
"You teach them to watch television!"

DIEHARD fits the bill, but is no fun to watch at Christmas.

Your vote choices are... unflattering to any of us.   :bluesad:

If you look at the plot keywords on imdb.com--184 of them--christmas is not one of them. So, the answer most likely would be no. On the other hand, Die Hard, which has 397 plot keywords at imdb.com does have Christmas as one of them with also said Christmas Eve and Christmas party, so a case can be made that at least some people, at imdb.com, think it may be a Christmas movie, as I have not seen neither film, I'll hold my opinions in variance till I see a film.

The Legend Of Hell House takes place in December, with the climax occurring on December 25...
Yet, it's clearly NOT a Christmas movie; It never mentions the holiday, & the novel only mentions it at the very beginning & very end, and I think I finally understand why.........

It's been a long, & contentious year, with the virus, the riots, the elections, how some leaders are handling these three problems...  And in my town, it seems like it's almost constantly raining this year.

Hell House is something of a study of people being isolated, they have each other, yet they are alone, in a beautiful mansion, but with no windows, with lot's of space, but not enough between each other, and the character's professional opinions & objectives rising towards extremely personal differences.............

It certainly doesn't FEEL like that time of year.

I have yet to still sit down and watch SANTA CLAUS VS. THE ICE CREAM BUNNY.

I am going to watch WINSLOW THE CHRISTMAS BEAR all the way through this year...and THE CHRISTMAS SHOES.

I've always counted it as one... "Where are my f**king Cha Cha© heels!?" scene clinches it for me.   Mind you, that's the only reference to Christmas in the movie..but it does make a lasting impression on the movie.

When I think of Christmas movies I think of those Hallmark movies. Watch one of those and then watch Die Hard

From the director of Die Hard.

Quote
Die Hard director John McTiernan has confirmed it is in fact a Christmas film.

The filmmaker, weighing in on the annual debate about the film’s festive qualities during the holiday season, addressed the “controversy” in a 12-minute video posted by the American Film Institute.

“We hadn’t intended it to be a Christmas movie, but the joy that came from it is what turned it into a Christmas movie,” McTiernan says several minutes into the video.

He then expands on Die Hard‘s themes in connection to American politics, explaining: “There are genuinely evil people out there.”

“My hope at Christmas this year is that you will all remember that authoritarians are low-status, angry men who have gone to rich people and said, ‘If you give us power, we will make sure nobody takes your stuff.’”

He continued: “And their obsessions with guns and boots and uniforms and squad cars and all that stuff. And all those things you amass with power meant to scare us, meant to shut us up so we don’t kick them to the side of the road and decent people of the world get on with building a future.”

The name "Jesus Christ" is uttered a few times throughout the movie. I think that counts as reciting the Lord's good name during the Christmas season.

Still doesn't feel like a christmas movie to me. McTierman even admits he didn't intended to be a christmas movie and it shows in my opinion.

But isn’t the movie about a group trying to steal from a rich company under the guise of a political movement, & doesn’t Bruce Willis kinda beat them up for that?

The movie takes place on December 24th at a CHRISTMAS PARTY.  The McClains want to be re united for the holiday... that's the core of the plot. You cannot find better Christmas driven stories than that.

The movie's set at Christmas, but I don't remember enough Christmasy mise-en-scčne to affect the film's feel. So, if I were to vote, based on what I remember of the movie, I'd vote no.

Seeing that this is a contentious subject, & since I've not seen the movie for a long time, I've decided to refrain from voting for the time being.

Adult Jesus should have learned that from when He was a kid. His unnecessary attitude allowed Him to break the law and it got Him killed. I wonder if He was a juvee as a teenager? You know, running around the countryside turning innocent people’s well water into wine, raising dead relatives just to scare the bejesus out of their families, etc. I mean, that rebellious attitude toward authority figures had to come from somewhere.

People seem split on this one. I've seen countless threads like this over the years on message boards. Which tells me that yeah, people seem split on this one.

Other classic mind boggling questions:

Are Jaws and The Silence of the Lambs horror movies?
Is Alien 3 the best Alien sequel?
Is Exorcist II better than its reputation?
Is Psycho the first slasher movie?
Is Friday the 13th part 2 better than the first one?

I don't fit either side of your split.  Sure, it's a Christmas movie.  Doesn't mean I want to watch it at Christmas.  Doesn't LETHAL WEAPON open with a Christmas suicide...?  Whether it does or not, I don't wanna look at that one on Christmas either.

Last night, TCM had on BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) which is "Christmasy" but also one I don't want for Christmas.

I like Die Hard, and even consider it a classic.  I imagine millions of other people do too.  The biggest problem is that I have already seen it too many times because it is on TV constantly.  Die Hard 2 was OK, not great though.  I haven't bothered to watch any of the rest.

In which case, if that's a Christmas movie, then so's Die Hard.
