Title: Godzilla King of the Monsters (2019)
Post by: Dr. Whom on December 19, 2020, 05:05:03 AM
Godzilla battles Gidorah for supremacy among the Titans, and succeeds with a little help from his friends. This one starts where 2014 Godzilla left off, so apparently you were supposed to pay attention while watching that. Too bad.
This one is better than the 2014 movie (which is not a particularly high bar to clear). It has way more monster action, and we even find Atlantis. I like the look of the monsters, and the inclusion of the original Godzilla theme music is a nice touch. Also, the powered up Godzilla radiating enough heat to melt nearby buildings is cool.

However, it tries to inject too much gravitas in what should be a fun ride. This serious tone clashes with the general inconsistency of the plot and characters. There is a lot of talk of restoring 'balance', without really explaining how that might work (essentially magic). Things happen and characters act as and when convenient for the plot. For instance: the Charles Dance character is left saying ominously 'we've got all we need' and then never appears again until after the ending credits...
All this meant that I quickly stopped caring.

It is also a very rainy movie and it pushes the teal and orange esthetic to absurd lengths.

Personally, I loved this movie.  I especially loved how they gave each of Ghidorah's heads a personality.  I do wish maybe Mothra had gotten a full scene in her adult form instad of just her larval one.

I thought it was pretty great, too.  I'm all primed for GODZILLA VS. KONG!

I enjoyed this movie, but the whole way through I kept thinking "Yup, put a cape on Godzilla and you have a superhero movie."

This movie seems to get more love than hate. It's not Kong: Skull Island good but still good enough. I did like Godzilla (2014) more which seems to be disliked more.
