There is a vast amount of misinformation about the riot at the Capitol yesterday. Here's what the facts are:

1) Any possibility for destruction would have taken place at the Capitol. Uncharacteristically, Mayor Bowser had called up 350 National Guard troops. Where were they stationed? None were seen near the Capitol until after dark. She wanted the violence and damage to be great when blaming Trump.

2) Many, many protests over the years have taken place on the East side of the Capitol. Some have clashed with the Capitol Police. The Capitol Police's only job is to protect the Capitol and its occupants by keeping out those unauthorized for entry. Why were the Capitol Police so unprepared and out manned???

3) A MAGA hat and a Trump flag does not make a "Trump Supporter". If I put on a black outfit and a BLM hat does that make me a Black Lives Matter supporter? Although everyone with access to a microphone has declared the perpetrators to be "Trump supporters" what do we know about them? Of the many violating numerous laws in typical Democrat fashion only 8 were arrested so as to keep the real identity of the perpetrators hidden. But who were the 8 and what is their background?

4) "Rumors" were that Trump's cabinet was planning to resign after the siege. This was apparently begun by Elaine Chao, Secretary of Transportation. Do you know who Elaine Chao is? She's Mitch McConnell's wife!

5) Two pipe bombs and a box of Molotov Cocktails were found. One pipe bomb was found near the Republican National Committee headquarters. Do you think that Trump supporters' focus yesterday was on the RNC? No one has ever tied a Trump supporter to these devices but they are the regular tools of BLM and Antifa.

In summary, this was a well coordinated effort by the Left to disparage the law abiding peaceful Trump supporters and Donald J. Trump. DO NOT BE FOOLED!

Guns were drawn. A woman was shot and killed by police, and three others died in apparent medical emergencies. A Trump flag hung on the Capitol. The graceful Rotunda reeked of tear gas. Glass shattered.

Ashli Babbit was confirmed to be the deceased by her husband Aaron, who spoke with KUSI News, and her mother-in-law, who also verified her identity to Fox 5 DC. She was a resident of the San Diego area and a veteran. Babbit was an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump, according to her social media feeds.

I love America and I am a Trump supporter, so there goes that theory. Explain how President Trump was "disabled" today that warrants abuse of the 25th Amendment.

I don't know about Breitbart or the Alt-Right; I've seen the term Alt-Right thrown around a lot, but I've never seen a good definition. I once read an article there, but it was just an AP repost with some angry conservative commentary added to the end; not something I'd want to read regularly, but also not something I can get up in arms about.
As for morals... I might disagree with a news service on an issue, or many issues. I may even believe that the service is intrinsically, morally wrong. But refusing to listen to them doesn't bring the nation together; it only divides us further. Merely saying we should have peace & unity does nothing if half the nation dismissed the other half as lunatics. Everyone should take a hard look at the other side, not to try to find fault, but to try to understand why they think the way they do.
And no assuming "X believes Y because they are hateful/bigoted/thieves/elite/lazy/greedy whatever." That's labeling; that's not understanding.

It's true that you do stoop to whataboutism at times, and Democrats are quite reasonably tired of that at this point.  They've heard so many years of "But Hillary!  But Benghazi!  But emails!"  that it's hard to engage when someone tries to twist the subject around to old news that doesn't have a direct bearing on the question at hand.

What happened during the summer is what it is ... the matter at hand today is unrelated.  We could spend oodles of time deconstructing how .... nope!  Not going there.

Facts, as I see it:

1.  Trump and Giuliani incited the insurrection attempt, and the terrorists who engaged in it.   There is broad agreement with this point of view, from within and from without our country, on both sides of the aisle.
2.  Sure looks like some of the Capitol police were complicit, from what I have seen in videos and photos and articles.

I think that Trump supporters are the real RINOs and always have been. Are the Q-Anon folks really Republicans, or just crazy losers who have latched onto Trump's "personal magnetism"? Nevertheless, accepting your view of things, "Republicans" are an even smaller minority than they were before. Such an obsession with ideological purity will ensure that Republicans, as you narrowly define them, will be an annoyance who will never wield political power on a national scale again.

The more stringent the loyalty test to be counted as a Republican, the weaker the party will be, which is one of the reasons Trump has been a disaster for the GOP.

Since we're stuck in a two-party system and will probably never get the multiparty democracy we need, we need a vital (and sane) Republican party. I can't enjoy the civil war in the GOP. AP finds most arrested in protests aren’t leftist radicals

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump portrays the hundreds of people arrested nationwide in protests against racial injustice as violent urban left-wing radicals. But an Associated Press review of thousands of pages of court documents tells a different story.

Very few of those charged appear to be affiliated with highly organized extremist groups, and many are young suburban adults from the very neighborhoods Trump vows to protect from the violence in his reelection push to win support from the suburbs.

Attorney General William Barr has urged his prosecutors to bring federal charges on protesters who cause violence and has suggested that rarely used sedition charges could apply. And the Department of Justice has pushed for detention even as prisons across the U.S. were releasing high-risk inmates because of COVID-19 and prosecutors had been told to consider the risks of incarceration during a pandemic when seeking detention.

Defense attorneys and civil rights activists are questioning why the Department of Justice has taken on cases to begin with. They say most belong in state court, where defendants typically get much lighter sentences. And they argue federal authorities appear to be cracking down on protesters in an effort to stymie demonstrations.

“It is highly unusual, and without precedent in recent American history,” said Ron Kuby, a longtime attorney who isn’t involved in the cases but has represented scores of clients over the years in protest-related incidents. “Almost all of the conduct that’s being charged is conduct that, when it occurs, is prosecuted at the state and local level.”

In one case in Utah, where a police car was burned, federal prosecutors had to defend why they were bringing arson charges in federal court. They said it was appropriate because the patrol car was used in interstate commerce.

Not to say there hasn’t been violence. Other police cars have been set on fire. Officers have been injured and blinded. Windows have been smashed, stores looted, businesses destroyed.

Of more than 300 arrested, there are about 286 defendants, others had charges dropped. Some live in cities like Portland and Seattle where local prosecutors declined to bring some protest-related charges.

Some of those facing charges undoubtedly share far-left and anti-government views. Far-right protesters also have been arrested and charged. Some defendants have driven to protests from out of state. Some have criminal records and were illegally carrying weapons. Others are accused of using the protests as an opportunity to steal or create havoc.

But many have had no previous run-ins with the law and no apparent ties to antifa, the umbrella term for leftist militant groups that Trump has said he wants to declare a terrorist organization.

Even though most of the demonstrations have been peaceful, Trump has made “law and order” a major part of his reelection campaign, casting the protests as lawless and violent in mostly Democratic cities he says have done nothing to stymie the mayhem. If the cities refuse to properly clamp down, he says, the federal government has to step in.

“I know about antifa, and I know about the radical left, and I know how violent they are and how vicious they are, and I know how they are burning down cities run by Democrats,” Trump said at an NBC town hall.

In dozens of cases, the government has pushed to keep the protesters behind bars while they await their trials amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed more than 220,000 people across the U.S. There have been more than 16,000 positive cases in the federal prison system, according to a tracker compiled by the AP and The Marshall Project.

In some cases, prosecutors have gone so far as appealing judge’s orders to release defendants. Pre-trial detention generally is reserved only for people who are clearly dangers to the community or a risk of fleeing.

In Texas, Magistrate Judge Andrew Austin repeatedly challenged the prosecutor to explain why Cyril Lartigue, who authorities say was caught on camera making a Molotov cocktail, should be behind bars while he awaits his trial. Lartigue, of Cedar Park, described his actions that night as a “flash of stupidity,” prosecutors said.
