Title: Are You Being Served?

For some reason watching this show makes me feel especially calm. It's like the anti-dentst's appointment of British TV.

Reputedly, Mr. Lucas and Miss Brahms were intended to be the focus characters, being the young, with it types sticking it to the stuffy Establishment represented by Grace Brothers Department Store. But Mr. Humphries and Mrs. Slocombe became the breakout characters. Something else that could be seen as interesting. Though Mr. Humphries acts as something of a mentor towards Mr. Lucas, his actor John Inman is actually a year younger than Trevor Bannister.

Yeah, I heard John Inman give an interview in which he said as much and referred to his own breakout status on the show as "I won." He did a publicity stop at a mall not far from my house not long before he died and I wish I'd gone to see him. My cousin says the show is no longer on TV much because the "gay mafia*" finds the humor centering on Mr. Humphries intolerable (even though it's nearly all implied), but I don't know if that's true or if other shows have come along to squeeze it out. I can say I have watched it with a room full of stoned young gays and they hooted with laughter, so, who knows.

*I've found nearly all of the backlash about gay depictions on TV comes not from gays themselves but those who get vicariously outraged on their supposed behalf. Gays tend to be a cool community in a lot of ways.
