Title: No Time To Die (2021)
Post by: Archivist on November 14, 2021, 07:28:26 PM
I did a three movie marathon this weekend, three movies on three consecutive days. No Time To Die was one of them, and the one that emotionally impacted me the most.

No spoilers.

Cinematography was off the charts, everything was so beautifully composed and lit. The movie is over two hours long, but is never slow, and the emotional sequencing keeps things going very well. There are some plot holes, but the emotional content of the film makes them less important.

I wasn't expecting certain plot developments (you'll know what I'm talking about when you watch it), nor was I expecting the ending (I was very close to tears).

Since Casino Royale was a reboot of the James Bond franchise, Daniel Craig's five films could be seen as a standalone series, kind of like Nolan's Batman trilogy. I feel that NTTD was a fitting end for Craig's tenure.

Despite growing up with Roger Moore and Sean Connery movies playing through my childhood, and Pierce Brosnan being very prominent in later years, Daniel Craig is my favourite James Bond by far. It will be interesting to see where they take the series from here.

At the end, it's both fitting and sad that there is no state funeral, or funeral at all. Bond was doing something that should never have been done, in a place that Britain should never have been, to destroy something that should never have been made. So having only a handful of people in a quiet room acknowledging his existence and passing is appropriate. And yet it's also deeply sad, his tremendous deeds are known only to a few, and will never been known to the world at large. But his legacy still lives, literally. I will really miss Daniel Craig as James Bond.

I preordered this on bluray and am greatly looking forward to watching it

-- right now I don't feel comfortable going to theaters

and even if I did this one is a close to 3 hours long... I like the ability to pause if I need to use the bathroom

I know what you mean about going to theatres. Not wanting to spark a political/medical/whatever debate, but I've been double vaxxed, and health regulations state that masks are to be worn inside cinemas, so I feel reasonably confident.

It wasn't until a couple of days after that I found out that the movie is two hours and 42 minutes long! It didn't feel that long at all, the pacing, story and editing kept things moving so well that I didn't even notice. I watched Eternals the next day and found myself shifting in my seat quite a bit because the pacing and editing just weren't working for me for stretches of the film. But yes, the ability to pause the movie to go to the bathroom is a bonus. A few people left the cinema and returned, presumably for a bio-break.

It's bloated and has some plot holes, which makes it a 2.5/4.

I stopped focusing on special effects, etc., because more of films have been using computer graphics and similar. In fact, here's an example from way back (2009) involving TV shows.

It's even better now because they use virtual sets.

Much has made of this last movie being too feminist or ruining Bond. Yikes. I watched "Casino Royale" last night and it has the same "defects". So yeah, it may not be the most cohesive of the Craig era Bonds, but it's a great counterpart / bookend to "Casino Royale". And I love the idea of the Craig Bonds running through all his character ark, from beginning to end. If only they had used SPECTRA and Blofeld better...

I wonder what they will come up with once they've picked a new actor.

That's kind of funny, especially in Casino Royale.  The general themes they're talking about are mostly in the book, and calling Ian Fleming's writing "too feminist" is kind of hilarious.
