Title: The rules apply to everyone, son...
Post by: Trevor on April 18, 2022, 02:24:42 AM
South Africa's high speed train known locally as the Gautrain has strict rules regarding eating and drinking on the trains, their buses and at the stations: you cannot eat, drink, smoke at any time and anywhere on the trains or in the Gautrain stations.

Now one entitled moron of a certain faith has gotten himself dragged on social media for " asking the Gautrain management to allow him to break his fast" and when they detained him - which they are allowed to do - he wailed about it on Twitter.

Wake up, you idiot: the rules are there for a reason and the world doesn't revolve around your religion. :hatred:

Only curious, why is food not allowed on Gautrains?

Here in Germany trains have dining cars, and many options to purchase food and drinks at train stations. They encourage to bring own food and drinks if it is a long train trip. In the early 1990s they even had McDonald's on trains (!) here.

I think it's because the Gautrain only travels from Pretoria to Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Airport so it's not a long trip: takes about 45 minutes to both Johannesburg and the airport from where I am. The only things you can do on a Gautrain station is load your card, wait and use the toilet, nothing else.

I did find this

Quote
Food and drink is not permitted on board the Gautrain. This enables us to ensure that you continue to enjoy a clean Gautrain environment.

to avoid litter and trash? That's silly. We also have speed trains. Trains and train stations here are not filled with trash, people have been eating on trains for decades.

I assume there is personnel cleaning the Gautrains and stations anyway, so this doesn't make much sense to me. But if those are the rules, so be it.

Those are the rules here, unfortunately. Parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria are litter strewn filth pits and riding on the Gautrain shows you how things could be if people gave a damn (which most apparently don't, sadly).  :bluesad:
