Actually I think almost anything repeated over and over, even nonsense gibberish, can produce a meditative state that leads to relaxation and a high. That's why repeated prayers and chants are found in almost every religion in the world, and beaded cords like rosaries are found in Islam, Buddhism, and Roman Catholicism, just to name three.

I been to the Hare Krishna center in West Virginia, New Vrindabon, lovely place founded by George Harrison's money, wasn't it, but the scandals there involving Sri Prabhupada and his successor Sri Baktipada didn't do much to make the movement sound like anything but a power and money cult.

Also the tactics used by members to raise money aren't very upright. I have been approached by HK's in various places including one in Washington DC who told me I had to pay a fine for "not partying on my lunch hour" and while they made clear it was a joke, I did get a lecture about wasting life in undue labor, and was told if I donated twenty dollars for a pamphlet, it would give me enlightenment and help offset the burdens my soul carried for not spending my free time more productively.

I said if he had a path to enlightenment, wasn't it enlightened then to give me the pamphlet for free so I could enter that same state? No, he wanted a twenty dollar "donation."
