Title: 80's icons on the move!
Post by: Mofo Rising on July 29, 2002, 01:50:46 AM
So we've all seen the resurgence of 80's stars.  Mr. T and Alf are both featured in several commercials.  E.T. had his movie re-released.  All those emo kids are putting there money into t-shirts with characters they barely remember pasted onto them.  Truly the 80's are back for their seventeen minutes of glory.

While this could be a worrying trend (Does anybody want to see the two Coreys worm their way back into the spotlight?  You know who I'm talking about.), I don't think it's all bad.  And I'd like to push one celebrity back into the mainstream.

That man, Ralph Macchio.  The Karate Kid himself.  We haven't seen you since MY COUSIN VINNY, Ralph?  Wherefore art thou?

Anyway, who do you want to see back?  The Monchichis?  That blue alien from the Reese's commercials?  Vanna White?  Let us know!

Jacko! The Aussie footballer turned actor.
A CGI remake of the THUNDERCATS.
A reunited Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.
Huey Lewis and The News, remember when these guys were all over the radio and MTV?
Men At Work. I bought a best of CD of their's from a cut out bin a few years ago, they were better than we remember them.

And curse you, MOFO RISING, for putting that stupid Monchichi theme song back in my head! I had supressed the memory of my little sister following me around the house singing that whenever she wanted to really p**s me off.

I'm very displeased with the reemergance of an icon of my youth: Snuggles. He was so sute and cuddly in the '80s, and now he's a brash jerk with a raspy cartoon voice that keeps badmouthing that poor porcupine.

I would like to se:
* Zoid, the Dominos pitchman with the red jumpsuit and bunny ears.
* Real slasher films with heaping amounts of nudity and inventive deaths.
* Rotoscope animation.
* Checkered slip-on sneakers.

I would hate to see:
* Acid wash denim jackets with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows.
* Feathered hair.
* A B-52's comeback.
* Wildly innacurate portrayals of punks and skaters in movies.

And speaking of Snuggles' voice, I've had it up to hear with the voice of the actress who played Dottie in Pee Wee's Big Adventure and now does the voices of Tommy on Rugrats and Buttercup on The Powerpuff Girls. Who agrees?

"Mr. T and Alf are both featured in several commercials"

I'd love to have seen Mike Piazza's reaction when they told him..."Your new co-star is...a puppet"

I'd love to have seen Terry Bradshaw's reation when they told him "You're being replaced...by a puppet"

The new retroactive fascination with Care Bears baffles me. I didn't think Care Bears achieved wild popularity back in the day.  I know a 20 something with a Care Bear tattoo. Poor thing.

Strawberry Shortcake (Purple Pie Man excluded) sucked, too.

Of all 80's girly toys, I'd like to see the Sea Wees make a striking comeback. They were these little stylized mermaids that you could play with in the bathtub. My years of Sea Wees preceded the years where every toy had a corresponding cartoon.

As with "My Little Pony," one of my biggest issues with Sea Wees was that they all eventually came with a baby Sea Wee. I never understood that. I mean, apart from the fact that your favorite Sea Wee or My Little Pony character was now burdened with the responsibility of single parenthood ... like, who was the father of all of those baby ponies and sea wees? I know they eventually came out with a male My Little Pony. His name, not surprisingly, was "Lucky."

I digress ... here are some random 80's thoughts:

* I want 80's alternative dance styles (minus breakdancing) to come back. Mainly because it's still the only way I know how to dance and I could be dangerous on the dancefloor again.

* I'd like to see week-long marathons of all the classic ABC Afterschool Specials. I'd also love to see marathons of Not Necessarily The News -- just because they would be so perfectly dated now.

* I might hang myself if Huey Lewis makes a comeback. Or his evil twin Joe Piscipo (sp). As music goes, I never stopped loving goofy 80's new wave tunes, so that's fine. I appreciate the cheese of 80's hair metal now more than I did in the day .

* A  thought which often spurs my deepest fits of depression is the knowledge that I will hear "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves every summer for the rest of my life. Same thing with "Summer of '69."

* Anyone else see shades of The Karate Kid in the trailers for the new teen chickie surfing movie?

That's probably because the trailer features the Bananarama song "Cruel Summer", which was also in THE KARATE KID.

Well, that and the whole "new kid (s) in town defies the odds by winning a competition they should be locked out of" motif. I doubt it'll have anything as memorable as "wax on, wax off," but the trailers smelled like teen Macchio spirit.

I would to see the these shows ( no remakes the originals)

 Battle of The Planets
 Voltron
Arc 2 ( I think that is the name of the show.)
Kid Video ( I just liked the music)

Actually I hate Huey Lewis, it's just the thought of his style of music somehow regaining popularity in this day and age of Jimmy Eat World, Nelly, and Pink.

Maybe Puff Daddy could do a remix of "Heart Of Rock 'n' Roll" or "The Power Of Love". The results would probably be so lame that it could induce anyone listening to commit suicide.

Noticed the Transformers are back, although the latest show sucks. I actually didn't mind the season of Beast Wars that featured the original Transformers. We just need some GI Joe. Hey, after last year, Americans are ready for their daring, highly-trained special mission force to battle terrorists once more.

Would definitely like to see more 80s music - AC/DC, GNR, Def Leppard, ZZ Top etc. Also wouldn't mind more early 80s British pop as well.

Couldn't have an 80s revival without Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis reuniting as Bob and Doug MacKenzie. That'd be cool, eh. As long as it was a better movie than that Blues Brothers 2000, cause that really, like, sucked, eh. I almost opened my jar of moths.

Hairstyles might be another matter. I prefer my current shaved dome to the mullet I wore in the 80s.

I never watch either show, but I've always liked Elizabeth Daily, or E.G. Daily as I believe she calls herself now.

>I'd also love to see marathons of Not Necessarily The News

I second that. Remember "sniglets"? Who can tell me what "tremblemblamation" was? :)

>Battle of The Planets

This turned up on a local channel a few years ago as Saban's Eagle Riders with all new dubbing. Also, I seem to recall seeing it announced that you could watch an episode of it online in the DivX showcase at www.divx.com.

Transformers, Thundercats and Battle of the Planets all have new comic books out now.  Actually, Thundercats hasn't been released yet, and I think Battle of the Planets was a one-shot, but they were all released recently.  "Updated" for an older audience, of course.

And other good news, Robotech finally has a decent looking video game coming out in the States.

And why complain about rap stars being in movies and not remember all those new wave singers from the 80's?  Let's get Sting and Adam Ant back into the theaters!  (On second thought, let's not.)

I'd like to see those "Spitting Image" puppets back on TV.  Now remembered primarily for the Genesis "Land of Confusion" video.  Man those puppets were freaky looking.

Morten Harket, Pal Waatakkr, and Mags better known as a-ha are better known for their 80s music but they made music up to now and they are one of my favorite bands. They need to come back to the US and play a few shows (they haven't since 1987 on their first tour)

Yeah, glam metal. It was cheesy, but it was fun. Now all metal is just chubby guys in black clothes screaming stuff like, "I hate me! Die!!!!". Whatever happened to "She's only seventeen, (seventeen),"?

I'd like to see 80's style music really come back. The 80's were a great decade for music. AC/DC's Back In Black anyone? A-Ha(where the hell did they go?) Everytime I get a faulty DVD it reminds me of the song "Freeze-Frame".  AHHH, the good old days!

80's music is making a comeback, of sorts. I don't know about the influence IN the music industry but i've noticed that enough decades have gone by that most radio stations have an all 80's station. And more movies are featuring classic 80's music or being set in the 80's (ie: Donnie Darko..romy and michelle, even never been kissed had scenes abiet they are more comedies)

Well Jay Dokken is still out there but without George Lynch. They have Reb Beach from Winger with them now. Last one I heard from them was Erase the Slate which reminded me of their earlier stuff.  Just avoid Dysfunctional like the plague. I can't even give it away it's that bad. The last Mr. Big album wasn't too bad either...just sounded too country in parts

If there is one thing that I would like to see it is the cheesiness of 80's movies.  I think a resurgence is in the works.   The mirimax film Rock Star, and the new Zone 5 Pictures release, Rock'n with Satan, is a good start.  If you guys haven't seen it Rock'n yet, check it out.  It's a mix between the best of the Reagan-era pro america/wild guy rebelion and a (JW) John Water's movie.   The *0's are comming back!

I cannot stand 80's hair/glam metal.  But the new wave and early punk was awesome.  I love Blondie and Devo.  And "Rock Lobster" is one of the best songs of all time.

I would love to see "Small Wonder" again.

And a "Goonies 2" is in the works, with all the original cast.

Here's (http://www.game-revolution.com/previews/screens/xbox/robotech/robotech.htm) a quick page about the game for the X-Box.

It's also being released on PS2, GC and GBA.  I've never really payed attention to Robotech, but the game looks good enough that I'll be picking it up on the Gamecube.

It could only ever be a horror movie - that girl gave me the creeps.

i always liked "Voyagers" - yeah it only last liked what..1-2 seasons because hexum accidentally killed himself with a blank gun. The kid was a dork, but the concept of the show was cool. I remember I only ever missed one episode and i was furious. Things I should be embarassed to admit? Well, not as much as I admit having a crush on the star of "BJ and the bear"! And i was a dance fever junkie. ;-p

But about Voyagers - We got a mini history lesson but I always liked time travel shows (including quantum leap). i'd love to just simply see the show in rerun - it's been ages. I remember the sci-fi channel once showed a snipped commercial of a bunch of shows I presumed they had rights to airing..one included "Voyagers". After contacting the network it turns out it wasn't on their schedule, i doubt it ever was. ye bastards! It might be neat to see it redone as a show (i don't think i could stomach a movie)

Actually, Voyagers was made in 1982 and he killed himself on the set of Cover Up in 1984 and was replaced by Anthony Hamilton.

I'm not so sure it was an accident though. He intentionally put the blank-filled gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

I'm sure it was an accident, his career was on the rise. His death certificate states it was an "accidental discharge of firearm", it was a prop gun with blanks, I bet alot of people think (or at least thought) those were harmless. He was probably goofing around. UNLIKE jason lee's death which is all too suspicious...as I can't imagine how real bullets ended up in any of those guns by accident.

The official ruling is that it was part of a prop bullet that had been used for a closeup scene showing the gun being loaded. Part of it came off in the gun, and when the blank was fired, it was propelled out the barrel.

Battle of the Planets has been released on DVD in all of its glory.  It includes the original version (Gatchaman ), Battle of the Planets , and the latest version, G-Force

Be warned:  any fond memories of the series you might have will be ruined by watching these DVDs.   Battle of the Planets is almost painfully bad at times.

Gatchaman, on the other hand, is a fairly decent show, worth picking up the DVD for alone.

G-Force I can't sit through.  For what its worth.

Incidentally, Battle of the Planets has been remade already as a short anime series called, I believe Gatchaman 95 .  It was released in the States as just Gatchaman.

A local independent station used to air VOYAGERS reruns on Sunday mornings in the mid 80s. Just enough episodes for a syndicated run on the weekends, I guess. It ran for about a year and a half on there.

They also used to show THE SAINT and MANNIX. Damn how I wish they would show any of these instead of the crap movies and 16-hours of infomercials they show now. Somebody might actually watch the station then.

I wouldn't mind a station dedicated to short lived programs (ie: anything that only lasted 2 years or less). I'm sure there are ALOT of them, and some even have a fan base..may have a cult following if re-aired. These forgotten shows will probably never be seen again otherwise since most stations prefer a programming schedule that has longrunning shows..although star trek doesn't and sci-fi shows them alot. That way I could see voyagers again, if anything for nostalgia..and other shows i may have long forgotten - or never saw because i lived overseas during a period.

There's a channel for everything these days, I think one for lost shows is overdue.

>prefer a programming schedule that has longrunning shows..although star trek

Star Trek has 80 episodes, which I believe is the minimum required for daily syndication. It ensures that they can air a different episode every week day for at least 4 months before any of them repeat. If you notice, shows like The Crow and Highlander: The Raven only air at most a single episode a week.
