Not sure, my parents paid for us all to see a lot of bad movies ("Message From Space", anyone), but as an adult I don't really go see movies in the theater anymore.

I guess you could count video rentals as 'paid to see', but there it's wide open as I've seen a lot of pretty bad ones that it'd be hard to nail down a definitive one; although any of the Italian Mad-Max ripoffs would probably make the short list

The one that comes to mind right now is Rookie of the Year.  My friend & I were 13-14 at the time and are both Cubs fans..so we thought it was going to be a really cool movie...afterward we wished we'd just gone to see Jurassic Park again instead.

This is why I like to wait to rent when it comes to video.  I do not want to send $25 ( including food) to see a movie that stinks only once.

I found that renting a movie would be cheaper and I see it as many times as I want.  I can also see if it is worth getting.

The worse movies I have seen are :

 1) Planet of Apes ( new one)
 2) Scarey Movie 2
 3) Rat Race

i liked rat race.  the scene where john lovitz crashes into the WWII reunion while driving Hitler's car cracks me up every time.  the worst i paid to see though has got to be godzilla '98.

Big screen misfires - whether in I saw 'em in a legit theater or a skid row grindhouse with drunks snoring all around me...

I was devestated after sitting through Jaws the Revenge - it was like getting raped.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare - talk about getting spit in the face!

Edge of Sanity and Return of the Living Dead Part 2 both had me literally squirming in my seat.  I swear, watching those unspool on the big screen was like having my teeth drilled sans novacaine.

Movies that just left me feeling burned were The Monster Squad and Transmutations.

Oh, and Zombie Island Massacre.

War of the Roses. Horrible film. Years later I still want my money back.

This would have to come from the category of films I've walked out of the theatre on before they were over.  One was an Italian witchcraft in modern times film that had a lingering closeup of a woman vomiting blood into a toilet & another lingering closeup of a tongue ripped from a woman's mouth by a pair of tongs.  I have no idea what the title was -- I saw it on the big screen around 1975, or so -- nor do I care to know anything further about it.
Movies I walked out on whose titles I can remember:
Howard the Duck
The Valachi Papers
Panic in the Year 3000
Of these I would say that The Valachi Papers -- what I saw of it -- wins.  Unenjoyably horrible on every level.
Now, as far as rentals go, isn't this why we're all here?  I mean, we do love a certain degree of bad, don't we?  While I consider myself something of an Ed Wood purist, I do have a special place in my heart for They Saved Hitler's Brain.  I wondered how the video store could charge money for this with a straight face, & then 2 months later I had to go out & rent it again just to make sure of what I saw.  Even worse the second time around.  God, I love it . . .

I have seen most of my stinkers via home video, though "Ghostbusters II" annoyed me pretty bad.

Now, so far as a "total waste of money," I think that "Beneath Loch Ness" gets my vote.  I wanted to see the film and pretty much only purchase these days.  The movie was only available for $27 (or so).  Man, I was so ripped off.

The worst movie I paid to see in a theater was American Werewolf in Paris.

The worst movie I rented was Zombie Nightmare.  Or maybe Howling: New Moon Rising .  There was a made for tape slasher flick, Blood Lake , I think its called.  Ugh.  Agh.

In other words, I pick 'em rotten.

The only movie I REALLY wanted my money back for, even though I didn't pay anything for it, was the "dinosaur" movie It's Alive.  Now that movie's painful.

FREDDY GOT FINGERED and PEARL HARBOR

When we were in high school, my friends & I used this scam to get in the theater:
we each put in $1, one guy would buy the ticket and the rest of us would climb up the fire escape to a door that the ticket buyer would open for us. (This was when tickets were only $6-and expensive for the time!)

I remember we used this scam to see (if I remember correctly we didn't have much choice for some reason) Shelly Long in "Troop Beverly Hills". Damn was that bad. We made a joke of it cause we got what we paid for!

The only other movie that was sooo bad that we almost walked out on was some Charles Grodin movie about a resort. I remember that we were only in the first 15-20minutes when my friends wanted to leave because this movie was THE WORST.

TOYS!

To this day, that may have been the most painful moviegoing experience ever. How I managed to sit through that movie from beginning to end, even I'll never know.

A close runner up would be JERKY BOYS: THE MOVIE (which is one of the only movies I have ever walked out of) and HUDSON HAWK (a movie so awful I actually walked out 20 minutes into, went down the hall, and decided to sit through STONE COLD for a second time (!) just to get my money's worth.

Man, for some reason I like "Message from Space," but seem to be a minority.

The review for this is coming in about a month (or so).

I'd like to see "Message From Space" again.  I saw it when I was very young and can only remove a few brief images.

You know my choices, Batman and Robin and Mortal Kombat: The Abomination.  But another that come to mind was Naked Gun 2 1/2 and 33 1/3.  Those two never had the same impact as the first one

I'de say "Buckaroo Banzai" that movie had me dumbfounded till the end. Now that I think about it, I'm still dumbfounded and don't go out much anymore. Who made that movie? I want to sue them for screwing up my head.:)

I refuse to pay any money to see "Battlefield Earth".  I do not  like John Travolta!   Besides it bad.

I liked "Troop Beverly Hills"!  It was funny.

Right now I am waiting to rent  the new "Star Wars"movie, "MIB", and "Monster, INC".  I hope I am not disappointed.

Buckaroo Bonzai requires multiple viewings to figure out what the hell is going on.  Watching it in college while (um, let's just say watching it in college) did not help the first time through.

>a lingering closeup of a woman vomiting blood into a toilet & another lingering >closeup of a tongue ripped from a woman's mouth by a pair of tongs

The tongue ripping sounds like Mark of the Devil, but that wasn't set in modern times.

>Man, for some reason I like "Message from Space," but seem to be a minority.

I thought it was stupid, but I kind of liked the spaceships. I have a model of the 3-winged bug-like ship hanging from my ceiling.

Post by: Dano on September 12, 2002, 05:06:57 PM
I understand that odd numbered Star Treks are SUPPOSED to suck, but good Lord this was an awful and boring movie.

I simply could not look at the Klingon without thinking about Taxi.

1. City of lost Children- no offense to you delicatessen/ Amelie fans, I just hate this s**t.  I don't want to see beauty & the beast guy in a tight sweater.  Faux art films do not rule

2.  That Denzel Washington horror movie where the spirit passes from person to person.  "I know you're there Zezial!!!!"  funny f**king s**t

3.  Midnight in the garden of good & Evil -   you think that because what's his name is in it it'll ne good but oooooh no

4. Beverly Hills ninja-  This one is the worst of all of these.

5.  Night of the comet- as a kid, the decision to see  this stinker was one of the worst ever.

Title: That Goddamned Cat
Post by: BlackAngel on September 13, 2002, 12:44:40 AM
Another Movie comes to mind was That Darn Cat.  My moms had to force me to take my brother and see this piece of s**t.  And, at the same time, I think the re-release of Star Wars 20th anniversery was out in theaters as well, and I wanted to see it so damn bad.  I think the theater we were in had both movies playing, but I couldn't take him there or he'll sing faster that Whitney Houston on a cocaine high.  And I can't leave him there, he was 7 at the time.  So the best thing I could do was sleep throught the whole entire movie (even the previews)

Star Treks III and V.

I don't pay to see many bad movies.  Usually I can tell pretty easily beforehand whether or not I'll like something.  But SIGNS is definitely the worst movie I've seen in the theater in a long time, though some of that was because of the misleading ad campaign.

Oh, boy . . .
I also mostly liked Buckaroo Banzai.  I just sort of got sad with the film because of so many missed opportunities with the storyline -- I thought it should've been even MORE over-the-top!   And, while I have never seen Message From Space, or even heard of it, I thought the seashell spaceships in Buckaroo Banzai were very cool indeed.
Of course, I was "in college" too at the time -- ahem . . .

Worst rental I ever paid to see: "The judas Project"
Worst movies in a theater i've paid to see:
"Beloved"
"Pulse"

Now i've discovered that I can get my money back if it sucks bad enough so the number of bad movies i've actually "Paid" to see is much less. ;-)

Worst movies I ever paid to see in theatres:

Santa Claus: The Movie (Why?)

Jason Goes To Hell (Watched it to the end, never admitted to it)

Jason X (We might as well have never gone, thats how much I saw)

Virtuosity (I fell asleep halfway through)

My Boyfriend's Back (Walked out after 15 minutes)

Star War's Episode 1 (I had to pop 10 No-Doz just to get through the credits!)

Star Trek 3-7 (Never again!)

My Girl (My girlfriend made me see this 3 times!  I now laugh every time I see   that kid get stung to death)

The rental list could go on for days so I'll spare you the torture.

The worst movies I ever paid to see  in a theatre are
1)  Highlander Endgame (a dissapointment)
2) Three strikes (  I still hate my friend for making me go see this.)
3)Hollow Penis....I mean Man (  if i saw Kevin's bacon one more time I was gonna have a fit)

On video:
Wes Craven's Carnival of Souls (confusing and boring )
Vengeance of the Dead ( Best thing about the movie was the Pimp commercial)
Grim ( Explain this movies existance to me)
The Fear (no comment)

There are probably more but I've decided to block them out of my memory.

I have to agree with these.  I forgot all about Hollowman, now I wish I would have never remembered.  If Elisabeth Shue was anymore wooden, she'd be stuck in the ground.

Grim was horrible and The Fear was damn near even worse (Have you seen part 2?).  If you want a movie that will melt steel with its stupidity, rent Dark Carnival.
Horrible, Horrible, Horrible.

I forgot about JASON GOES TO HELL....I guess I'd purged that from my memory.

Oh yeah, HARLEM NIGHTS.  It was one of those deals when there was absolutely nothing on I was interested in, my stupid cousin was with me and he was  pushing for TANGO AND CASH.  I decided this was better, but I think it was one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't type situations.

I would say EPISODE I, but I don't know if it was really bad, it's just that I'm really not into STAR WARS anymore.  It was more something I liked as a kid.

I was 7 when I saw Star Wars, I was 30 when I saw The Phantom Menace.  I've never seen a movie yet that had the same impact on me as Star Wars, but being much older now changes my perception.

However, my seven year old son responded to The Phantom Menace in much the same way as I remember responding to Star Wars.

It's hard for me to judge the Star Wars movies objectively because I've aged and grown and changed as they've been made.  But seeing the reactions of my children to seeing the new movies tells me they're doing something right
