Title: Movies and signature songs
Post by: Mofo Rising on September 29, 2002, 12:27:49 AM
I was interested in seeing a list of movies and their signature songs.  You know, movies that have a song that is associated with them.  Or songs that when you hear them you automatically think of the one movie that is associated with them.

The primary example I can think of at this moment is horrible, but is should serve as an example.  TITANIC and that godawful Celine Dion song.  When you think of one, you think of the other.

Or say APOCALYPSE NOW and Ride of the Valkyries.  (Although I think of "kill the wabbit" when I hear Ride of the Valkyries.)

I think you can figure out what I'm getting at even though my examples suck.  I had an interesting idea and couldn't follow through.  Although I'm sure all you message boardians can come up with something.  Preferably "bad movie" related.

Have at it!

I liked the song by Celine Dion " My Heart Will Go On".   This song got me through a very ruff time in my life.  This song came out when I lost my first child and seven months later I lost my second child.

The only thing I liked about "Titanic" is it show How the ship went down.  I have always been interested in the "Titanic" and its history.

Bad part of  "Titanic" was the story line between  Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet.

Uhmmm... Let me think...

1) "Johnny B. Good" ----> Back to the future.

2) The Door's "The End" ----> Apocalypse Now

3) "Moonriver" ----> Breakfast at Tiffany's

Not B Movies, though.

Ghost: Unchained Melody (Time...goes byyy...so slooowly..)
Ghostbusters: Do I REALLY have to say it?
Men in Black: See "Ghostbusters"
Beetlejuice: Not really a song per se, but  the main theme by Danny Elfman ROCKS.
Jurassic Park: See "Beetlejuice", replace Danny Elfman  with John Williams.

"Good Enough" by Cyndi Lauper = "The Goonies."

The DVD even has the weird MTV music video.  Rowdy Roddy Piper!  The Sheik!  And, at the end, Andre the Giant stomping around!  It is like a weird 80's hallucination.

Reservoir Dogs/"Stuck in the Middle With You"
Pulp Fiction/"Misirlou"

The Blob/"The Blob"
2001/"Also Sprach Zarathustra" and "Blue Danube Waltz"
A Clockwork Orange/"Singin' In the Rain" and "Ode to Joy"
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/"Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"

Less on-topic, but if you want to hear an actually pretty good version of that Celine Dion song, check out Los Straitjackets' Ventures-style instrumental version.

Awful little diddly that goes "King frat king ....... fraaaaaaaaaat" and so on and so forth. Very bad. Very Annoying.

I agree with "Oh Yeah" as reminding me of Ferris Beuller

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: "Killer Klownz From Outer Space" - The Dickies
Classic song from a classic band.

Are you sure?  I know Ray Charles' "I Can't Stop Loving You" was used for the climactic scene.  The only "Rambling Rose" I know was by MC5, and that certainly wasn't in the movie.

Here are some more:

"Bohemian Rhapsody"  WAYNE'S WORLD
"Partytime" RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD

Mea culpa. You're right. It was "I Can't Stop Loving You." What was I thinking. Now back to our sponsor.

It's A Long Road from "First Blood"

That Kenny Loggins song from Stallone's "Over the Top"
"Meet me half way, across the sky!"

Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper - used to good effect in John Carpenter's Halloween and Stephen King's The Stand.

Bandstand Boogie in John Carpenter's Escape from New York

Alice Cooper's The Man Behind the Mask from Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part 6.

Benson, Arizona from Dark Star.

Jerry Reed's East Bound and Down - Smokey and the Bandit.

Peggy Sue Got Married used in Peggy Sue Got Married!  :-)

"Showdown" in William Lustig's Maniac.

Tubular Bells in The Exorcist

What was I thinking? It is worst then I thought. It was Nat King Cole who had a hit with "Rambling Rose" in '62, not Ray Charles. Though, that was the same year that Ray Charles had his hit with "I Can't Stop Loving You." Thanks again for Mofo Rising for pointing out my error. Now, back to our sponsor.

Didn't "Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark" do a theme song for one of those similar 80's brat pack  (Molly Ringwald) movies like "Pretty In Pink" or "Sixteen Candles"?

Title: Re: Movies and signature songs

OMD sure did.  "If You Leave" was pretty much the theme for "Pretty in Pink."

I have the OMD greatest hits CD, have for years.  Good stuff when taken in moderation.

Yeah, that was the song I was thinking of..couldn't remember the title (but that makes sense) and outside of "The Breakfast Club" I didn't see many of those movies so I coudln't place it accurately

I have a OMD tape around somewhere.  Can't remember the title but it has some kinda strange stuff (like Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech done to music)

I can't hear the Beatles song "Can't Buy Me Love" without thinking of the film by the same name, "starring" Patrick Dempsey. There is some evidence that this song was a hit prior, but that's what it means to me.

And is there any film besides Buckaroo Bonzai that could carry that cool synth song that rolls over the credits?
