Title: What Toon Characters Do You Despise?? Post by: Ash on December 12, 2002, 01:31:36 PM I watched "King of the Hill" last night for the umpteenth time.
I have never actually hated a cartoon character in my life until now. I mean, there's alot of cartoon characters we've all grown up with that we don't like (Scrappy Doo for instance, or one of the idiot Smurfs who never banged Smurfette when he had the chance or made a secret deal with Gargamel to take over) for some reason or other but we just accept them and go on with the show. Never in my life have I seriously not liked a cartoon character until now. I have to admit. I HATE HANK HILL'S DAD!!!!!!! Everytime an episode that seems to center on him airs, I shudder. I hate this cartoon character!!!!! Cotton Hill must die!!! If it isn't his ranting & raving, (which most men in their 70's don't do, cause usually their too old & tired like MY grandpa is...there are some exceptions though) it's his stubby short legs and black beads for eyes and a voice as caustic as battery acid that make me want to jump into the toon itself and put my hands around his throat! I know you're envisioning it right now! Hank himself runs a close second. I'd shoot myself if I had a dad like him. Always so overreactive about everything and totally happy and willing to be a pawn for Strickland Propane. To me, being the lackey of a dirty old man who happens to own his own business and not owning a business of my own is nothing other than settling for second best in life. Not me! No sir! He strives for good moral values but he's still a pathetic dimwit in my opinion. And whenever he seems to be in the middle of anything even SLIGHTLY out of the ordinary he gives that usual "UUUhhh"! Can you hear it in your head? I can! (reminiscent of Butthead..... yes I know, they're both voiced by Mike Judge) As a matter of fact when I think about it, I dislike most every character in this show with one exception, Dale. I can pinpoint why I like him the best. Maybe because he also seems to take things too far but still be likeable in the end. I dislike most every character in this show yet still I watch it. I think the reason I like it and hate it at the same time is because for every character in it, I know a person in real life who closely resembles them. I still hate Hank's dad. The politically correct ones from the 70s, where they're friends and never seem to get into any real conflict, are awful. The style was all cutesy and the stories weren't written to appeal to anyone over the age of three.
The cartoon characters I hate the most are the add-ons, the redundant characters thrown into a good show because somebody felt it needed improving. Scrappy was already mentioned. This could also include the talking animals ABC added when they adapted their hit sitcoms to cartoons in the early 80s. Also, the more I get older, the more I find I appreciate Ren & Stimpy. The opposite seems to be true for Rugrats. And I never have, and probably never will see, the point of Doug. With the exception of Donald (who was a grouch), there wasn't an ounce of personality among them. What makes me even madder is their immense popularity. To paraphrase Bart Simpson: I didn't think it was physically possible, but the main Disney characters both suck and blow at the same time.
wheresthecarrot: I completely disagree with the Warner Brothers comment. While I could have lived without Sylvester, Tweetie, and Pepe LePew, the stuff WB did between 1941 and 1955 was no less than the funniest stuff ever animated. It is funny to kids and adults, it is both violent and child-appropriate at the same time, and it is rooted much further back in our history than that chirping, gyrating mouse. Buggs Bunny himself is a white, urban, Yankified version of Brer Rabbit, an oral tradition going back to the African tribes and brought to this country by the slaves. WB's characters were the most imaginative, best animated, funniest, and culturally relevant cartoon characters ever. I think part of it, inconeivable as it sounds, was lack of exposure. While Mickey, Minnie, et al were undeniably omnipresent, I didn't really get a chance to see much of their actual cartoons (I didn't get cable, so no Disney channel, and there weren't that many tapes of them available in the late 80s). I didn't have anything against them per se, but I looked at them as more advertising logos than anything else (which is really what they are). The Looney Tunes, however, were readily available in their raw, uncut glory at the time, and in many ways shaped who I became. Looking back at them, one of the most remarkable things about them is what BASTARDS most of them are, yet still remain likable. Back in the day, Bugs, Daffy, and the rest were out-and-out antiheroes. I especially love the one where Bugs meets Little Red Riding Hood, and eventually teams up with the Wolf because Red's so annoying.

Snady in Spongebob, Spongebob is really a good show, I was surprised that I started liking it but Sandy is a boring character there though. The best Gumby show was one where Goo (the blue girl thing) dropped her hankie and Gumby and Pokey fought over who got to pick it up. Prickles: Gumby, stop! I'm running out of breath! Gumby: Had enough, eh? (laughs, continues chasing Prickles with the train) All throughout the episode, I kept expecting the "violence isn't the answer" speech, with Gumby and Prickles reconciling their differences... BUT IT NEVER COMES. Gumby somehow ties up Prickles with the train, wins back Goo, the end. This wouldn't have been half as disturbing if it were done for laughs (a la Loony Tunes), but the whole thing was strangely straight-faced. It seemed like it was actually saying, "Violence IS the answer, kids. If you percieve that your friend has slighted you, run him down with a train, and all will be righted." Always hated Bevis and Butthead, I went to high school with too many people who were just like them. They never realized the characters were versions of themselves. "King Of The Hill" gets on my nerves, never could make it through an entire episode. I hate Mike Judge's animation, and all the voices he does. Pathetic. Jabberjaw. As for toons I hate, Doug can jump up my butt, and I agree with everyone who can't stand the damn Rug Rats. Ugh. The new Transformers Armada brings out my urge to kill quite strongly, although the comic book it's based on is tolerable. And I also hate Buddy Lee with the burning passion of a thousand Chernobyls. I could somewhat accept the idea of Godzilla hooking up with the crew of a research vessel (an idea ripped off by the more recent Deanzilla cartoon), but what was the point of Minya's retarded brother? It's another example of the thinking at that time that all cartoon adaptations needed some form of animal comic relief. Godzookie belongs in that part of Hell occupied by the likes of Mr. Cool from the Happy Days cartoon, Squealy from Laverne and Shirley, and that stupid alien dog from the Mork and Mindy cartoon. I can't even remember his name. The show sucked so badly, it was gone in no time.
Hated 7-Zark-7 too. It's been a long time since I've watched Battle of the Planets, but I think the segments with Zark and the dog were added into the episodes when they were edited and dubbed for North American TV. Not sure whether a character was needed to set up the chopped up stories so they'd be understood, or somebody in charge just felt a cute robot would go over with the kids. Funny, as a kid, I always hated the characters who were thrown in to appeal to me. The cute talking animals, child sidekicks and other critters obviously didn't belong in those shows. And now, looking back, almost every cartoon I watched as a kid was homo-erotic or at least had a grown man in his underwear hanging around with a young boy. Masters Of The Universe, Thundercats, etc. And that brings me to that stupid little lardo cat that tawked wike dis. Why did they throw annoying comic relief into those shows? All I wanted to see was stuff blowing up and senseless violence, like all healthy, well-adjusted boys. I used to like Rugrats, but not anymore. The best Nicktoon ever was Rocco's Modern Life, no matter what anyone says. I think you have that backwards; Tom is the cat, Jerry is the mouse. Like I said, their is no real protagonist in "Tom and Jerry" The two do what they do for their own reasons that often bring them into conflict with each other. IT's not as cut-and-dried as the Sylvester and Tweety relationship.. Sometimes Tom is really out to get Jerry, other times Tom is just minding his own business and Jerry gets antagonistic. A good example is the episode where Jerry is sleepwalking and keeps doing things to hurt Tom. However, there are a few where Tom uses Jerry as a semi-servant, especially when trying to impress girls, where Tom is definately the 'bad guy' to Jerry's persecuted 'good guy'. With Tom & Jerry, no matter who the antagonist is, Jerry usually wins. In a Foghorn cartoon, they were always both out to get each other, and both wound up getting their comeuppance pretty evenly. Same deal with Spy vs. Spy (except when the Grey Spy is involved).

Thanks for correcting my mistake Raj. But in any case, it seems to me that Tom (the cat) only uses Jerry to further his own ends (such as getting a girl, or the adults want Tom to get rid of mice or he is out). Even if he does instigate, he always gets the worst end. In one episode, Jerry and some little diapered sidekick break into a king's house, steals food, and causes Tom to be guillotened. What does Jerry do? Laugh! That is sadistic. How many times has Jerry got Tom evicted. Many. How many times has Jerry been kicked out? Never! Jerry is a cruel bastard. Pepe frikkin' LaPew....what the hell was the point of that? I can agree with the Frenchman as Skunk idea(this has nothing to do with the current political situation, it's much deeper than that). But, the damn thing wasn't funny, it was about a rodent trying to get laid, with disasterous results. I don't know about you, but that hits too close to home. Just too painful to talk about.
Aside from Goofy and Donald, none of the Disney Toons are worth warm p**s. Mickey's gay(and that's okay), Minnie is frigid, Pluto, okay he was cool. And I think they all suffered from obsessive/compulsive disorder...they're ALWAYS wearing gloves, the freaks. Sylvester and Porky Pig...c'mon, frikkin' SPIT IT OUT ALREADY!! I'm not intolerant of those with speech disorders, we all have flaws and we all have problems, but DAMMIT PIG get the d@#$ out of you're mouth and sound off. Those two need to take the John Wayne Speech Therapy course as seen in The Cowboys. You know how when a tv series runs out of ideas they bring in an adorable new character(Scrappy Doo, Cousin Oliver, The Olsen Demons)? Anyone remember The Great Gazoo, oh yeah, he sucked. Not only was he out of context, he was frikkin' unpleasent! And that wasn't enough for the Flintstones, nooooo they had to bring in The Scmoo!! What the hell was that about? What was it? A Ghost? Looked like a big honkin' wad of....wad!!! Then, they had the low-rent, knock-off Addams Family move in next door. I gotta go take a Xanex and lay down now. -Fred- (scooby doo): that god damn scarf wearing pansy who never made a pass at daphanie during the whole show -Scappy doo(scooby doo) : that little mongrel was the down fall of the series in my opinion. Every time he spouted off "Puppy Power" I wished Shaggy would have just kicked him right in the monsters mouth that he was barking at. I've never liked Futurama or Power Puff Girls--the former because I just never saw the show as funny, just a bunch of animation in-jokes...the latter because I just figured from the get-go that the show wasn't designed to appeal to me so I quit watching after the first couple of episodes.
