Title: where's the dvd?
Post by: Susan on December 16, 2002, 10:56:22 PM
"the incredible shrinking Man"
"Dragonslayer"
Red Sonja (ok, i like the conan flicks!)

Who at the studios do I have to bribe to get certain titles released on dvd? Meanwhile i'm subjected to jennifer lopez movies and "baby, secret of the lost legend". Is there just no way of knowing if a movie will ever be released?

Is there no God? What films have been on your waiting list...

While I would love to see Dragonslayer and Red Sonja on DVD with some kickass featuers (Anchor Bay is Slaytanic with special editions), I grew up on Baby, Secret of the Lost Legend and it's one of my favorite childhood flicks.  I didn't know it was coming out on DVD.  More information, please?

And where's Texas Chainsaw Massacre? The Frighteners? Monster Squad?
All of them have great LDs, so what's the holdup?

Title: And what about the Empire Pictures flicks?
Post by: Chris K. on December 17, 2002, 01:14:05 AM
MGM aquired the Charlie Band/Empire Pictures films (after they were purchased by the now defunct Orion Pictures Corporation, which I might add MGM also owns Orion) back in the early 90's, and to this day not one of them has been released on VHS or DVD.

With their Midnite Movies on the way, it would be nice to get MGM to release the Stuart Gordon/Empire flicks FROM BEYOND and DOLLS as a "Double Feature". And with the other Empire features THE ALCHEMIST, THE DUNGEONMASTER, ZONE TROOPERS, TERRORVISION, TROLL, etc. I would like to see these out as well. Our old bootleg tapes are not going to last very long.

I want "Three The Hard Way", Widescreen, with commentary by Jim Brown, Jim Kelly & Fred Williamson.

On DVD. You can easily buy it from Amazon.

Not quite. CRAWLSPACE is on a double feature DVD with the non-Empire THE CELLAR. And they did re-release GHOST WARRIOR and CELLAR DWELLER on VHS, though they are exclusive titles at Amazon.

My waiting list contains these films:

Summer Camp Nightmare
Legend of Billie Jean
Angus
Wacko
Student Bodies
Primetime
They call me Bruce/They still call me Bruce (that would be a great double feature dvd)
Chopping Mall
Massacre at Central High
Porky's Revenge (you gotta finish the trilogy)
Revenge of the Nerds 3/4 (same as above, I'm a completist)
When Nature Calls (not ace ventura the troma movie)
Basketcase 2/3
The State (complete season set)
Rest of the Killer Tomato movie (why is part 2 the only one on dvd?)
Glory Daze

and out of all of those movies, the only one that I think stands a chance to get released is When Nature Calls since troma does actually release their older films.  Then maybe a couple of the others stand a miniscule chance with companies like anchor bay but most of them I'll never see released on dvd.

Yes, CRAWLSPACE was released on a Double Feature DVD with THE ATTIC, not THE CELLAR as you called it.

And yes, now I recall GHOST WARRIOR and CELLAR DWELLER were released on VHS via MGM in the early 90's, however I know those who have seen the MGM video releases and the quality was very disappointing.

But even so, MGM still has a batch of Empire flicks that are just crying to be out on DVD in their original aspect ratio. And if they do release them, I hope it isn't going to have just a trailer for suppliment material. Charlie Band is still around and it would be nice to get an audio commentary on the films TRANCERS, THE ALCHEMIST, and THE DUNGEONMASTER. Ted Nicolaou directed TERRORVISION, so he's still around for a commentary. DOLLS and FROM BEYOND can have a commentary from Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs, and Barbara Crampton (these people aren't dead yet). MGM doesn't realise what gold they have on their hands.

An on-line petition needs to be started.

Whoops! Guess I was still thinking of CELLAR DWELLER when recalling all those titles.

I agree there is probably an audience to justify DVD releases for many Empire movies. However, I think with the exception of a few titles (like FROM BEYOND), they would sell better if they were released in the double-feature format.

Oh, there are two other Empire movies currently on DVD that I neglected to mention: RAWHEAD REX and ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS. Though some people might not consider them "official" Empire movies.

The distribution rights for the 2nd Tomato movie are held by New World (at least what's left of them), and Anchor Bay has an exclusive contract with them to re-release their movies on DVD and VHS (Coming up next year: The ANGEL trilogy!)

The 1st movie was re-released on video a few years ago by Disney, so they might still have the rights for a DVD release. As for part 3 and 4, Fox did have the distribution rights when they were released on video several years ago, though the contract may have expired by now.

Four Square Productions (the company that made all 4 movies) is still around, and has a web site. You might want to contact them to inquire about possible DVD releases for the remaining 3 movies.

I remember liking that one too, but I saw it a couple years ago and couldn't believe how bad the dinosaur effects were. Ok, I know that the idea for Jurassic Park hadn't even been thought up back then, but I thought I remembered them as being more convincing...

Am I the only one who saw "baby, secret of the lost legend" when it came out and thought it was the most ridiculous thing ever? lol

In fact I had mixed feelings about "jurassic Park" as the modern day equivilent of that dribble. But, I do think JP3 is superior in all respects, but i digress

I just can't figure out how some popular titles never get released while stuff like 'egah..or egad'..something like that, gets released.

Does anyone know if this film is on DVD? (i ask because the name eludes me at the moment). Jack the ripper goes into the time machine to the future while being pursued by the creator of the time machine.

Starring Malcolm McDowell as H.G. Wells, and David Warner as Jack the Ripper.

Yes yes yes! I own Return on DVD, and Attack and Strike Back on VHS. But I can't stomach $30 for Eat France :(

>>"Time After Time" and it is out on DVD<<

Ah thanks, that's the one. I don't know why I always go blank on the title of this one but i'm probably one of the few out there who liked it, I always had a thing for time travel movies - the few that are out there. Off topic I also liked "Millinium" (even tho i can't spell it!) ;-)

I liked Time After Time too. I'm also a big fan of time travel movies. I even liked the TV movie of The Time Machine that came out in the 80's.

I don't know that I saw that movie from the 80's, tho I would think I have since i used to love watching tv movies back then (don't so much anymore).Didn't see the new Time Machine Remake, just couldn't bring myself to do it. If done well time travel can be a very intresting and thought provoking topic. I just hate movies that depict it as simple without thought, because in fact if you do go back in time then it would seem fate is already laid out for you and it would go on for infinity. You begin to wonder if everything you do is truly spontanious or predestined. While I can't say much for some movies the "Terminator" gives you that sense at the end when you see everything she went through had already been done before (when the boy takes her photograph we see earlier in the film)

I only remember a few things about it; the star was a scientist working in a lab and his time machine looked like something out of the Buck Rogers TV show, with a triangular base. I also remember that he went back to the old west at one point.

What are some of your favorite, obscure time travel movies besides Time After Time?

I like;

Diaster In Time/The Grand Tour
Time Rider

Triangle..hmm..sounds very 'land of the lost'..lol. I did watch the "voyagers" tv series back then. Just don't think i recall that movie. liked "Quantum Leap" too.

>>What are some of your favorite, obscure time travel movies besides Time After Time?<<

TERMINATOR..Oh, you said oscure..heh.

MILLENIUM.. as boring as some parts are I actually did like it. Yeah, i'm the one

"THE TIME MACHINE" (classic that is).

12 MONKEEY's was highly fascinating..the time travel part anyhow. ;-)

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN (haven't seen it in ages tho)

Donnie Darko actually presents some very interesting ideas on Time for a film. Most go for the gimicky "back to the future" fun but I always like it to be more dark, eerie, with a sense that if time travel were possible it would leave very little doubt that we would live in a world of inevitability in that maybe every decision we make is predestined. In away it makes you wonder how much real control we have over our future if that is the case.

I wouldn't really consider any of those obscure. :)

I loved The Final Countdown, especially the scenes of the F14's playing with the Japanese Zeros.

Ok..obscure. Um, I remember seeing one about the bermuda triangle opening some portal in time but I forgot the name of it. ;-)

I think i'd have alot of fun nitpicking at time travel in movies. The "Superman" sequence always bugged me when he saved Lois. Hmmm, that's two movies where christophere reeve did the time warp

There have been a couple like that. There was Fantastic Journey where they ended up stranded on an island with time portals on it, which was also a series. There was a boring one that the SFC shows every now and then where a husband loses his wife overboard, finds her on an island like a week later and she has a 10 year old son. The one with Puke Larry, I mean Luke Perry has them finding a cruise ship and when they eventually get rescued a couple days later, you hear a news broadcast that they were reported missing like 5 years ago.

In fact, most of the Bermuda Triangle movies have some elements of time travel in them.

Fantastic Journey is the one I'm thinking of, tho a few bermuda triangle movies were spawned from the 70's era. I also try to avoid the Sci-fi channel. They really don't have that many captivating shows (that overly advertised spielberg one for example was a dissapointment for me. Not the amazing stories but the new one, Taken)

It's interesting how time travel has been associated with the bermuda triangle, probably based on the mysterious (or not so mysterious) dissapearance of vessels. I think i saw a show that said it could be due to something under the water with strong magnetic features affecting the electronic systems on crafts. They also showed some kind of, what appeared to be, large blocks of stone aseembled together that looked like a road. No matter, the mystery of it all is what made me always want to go there as a kid. I still kinda do. ;-)

Yes, there was one I saw late one night that really creeped me out. In the end, all but one of the events had a rational explanation, but while watching it, you don't know that and all this weird stuff is happening, like a body appearing to float in one of the cabins.

I kind of liked it.

I seem to recall seeing a special on it and one of the incidents they mentioned was a squadron of planes disappearing in a fogbank during the war and reappearing like 3 days later. Planes don't carry enough fuel to keep them in the air for 3 days and even if they did, they would have flown out of the fog long before that.

I never saw that!

Yeah, some show where scientists went to try to uncover the mystery. But they pointed out from certain areal views you could see the paved "road" under the water that stretched for miles. They speculated the fabled city of atlantis. ;-)

In fact, most of the Bermuda Triangle movies have some elements of time travel in them.

Then there's The Dark Side Of The Moon (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0099364) where you just feel like you've been lost in time by the end

Weird, I never heard of that.
