Title: Kinda Off Topic...Songs At Your Funeral
Post by: Ash on January 12, 2003, 06:20:46 AM
I again wish to address a topic that all of us have thought of at one time or another.

OUR APPROACHING DEATH.

After you are dead and your body is being lowered into the ground (if that's what you choose) what song would you like to be played to remember you by?

I choose "Take A Picture" by Filter.

I'm sure you've all had that particular vision....of those people mourning you at your funeral and you're seeing it as a kind of out of body experience.

You're behind and above them.

Looking down.

At them.

Then you zoom closer and examine their faces close up to see their tears and hope that the song you've selected will stain their memories forever.

Some songs are meant for just that type of reason.

What's yours?

Pretty freaky topic, I'd pick an old woman with a casket by pink floyd with Syd Barrett. Think it would fit quite possibly.

To keep the situation light "Hope that I get old before I die" by They Might Be Giants would be something that I'd want played

This post is at a very awkward time...

JR, a member here, is dying (if he hasn't already passed), correct?
My friend Timmay's 2-monther since his death is this Tuesday.
My friend Jeff was in a car wreck Friday night, and probably won't make it.

That said, I only want 2 songs played:
Shadows Fall - "To Ashes"
Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Freebird"

I suppose it would be in bad taste to suggest "Another One Bites the Dust"?

I would have to say "Song for the Road" by Tanglefoot, or "Deep Peace" or "Stagnant" by Devin Townsend.

Title: Ya Know.....

Ya know, after I wrote this thread I remembered J.R.'s current personal battle he's fighting right now.

I thought, "Oh s**t, maybe I shouldn't have wrote that." and indeed felt bad.

I almost deleted this post for that very reason but decided not to because it is a post about thoughts most all of us have had.

I feel like apologizing for being somewhat insensitive but I won't.

This is real life and I won't say I'm sorry for that.

I'd actually like to hear J.R.'s feelings on this.

Mine would be either "Gagged, Shagged, and Bodybagged" by Gore Rotted or "Can I Take My Gun Up to Heaven" by Cracker.

Or maybe the entire Throbbing Gristle catalog to p**s people off.

I plan to have myself incinerated (once dead, that is). If there is to be music playing while this happens, I'd prefer Pink Floyd's "Confortably numb" to AC/DC's "Highway to Hell".

"Big Gig in the Sky" by Pink Floyd and "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult

Glad to see you thought about J.R., ASH. I kind of thought the same thing.

Jerusalem by Sleep, it's a 52 minute stoner rock song.  Not that great but I'm dead so let them sit through it......... I want midgets there too.

I don't care, I'll be dead.  Let my family and friends pick something to listen to that reminds them of what they want to remember of me.

Maybe something they's pick would surprise me

Take Away My Pain & The Spirit Carries On by Dream Theater
Heal My Soul & Sleep by Savatage
or even Father, Mother, Son from The Scream

Maybe I am the buzzkill, but I typically imagined a little known insrumental by Sting called "I miss you Kate".

Quite haunting.

Title: Another one......

Another good one would be "A Tout Le Monde" by Megadeth.

Thought I'd "resurrect" this thread, seeing as everyone was saying what songs they'd have in the "go out in a more eco-friendly way" thread.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_gh4UC39YE

I think this song is unquestionably apt for lil' 'ol me. In a few simple verses, Rob Halford pretty much sums up my lack of faith and indifference for the world. Plus, the guitar solo at the end is f**king epic!

Wow!  A seven year old thread.
It's funny because I barely remember writing half of these. (this one included)
I would just crank 'em out...one right after the other.

The weird thing about this thread is that my younger brother died in a motorcycle accident seven months after I wrote it and I remember the songs that were played at his funeral.

I've already told my family I want "Skalds and Shadows" by Blind Guardian played for me.  After a brief ceremony I want them to have a party and play lots of music, but that is the one I want at the funeral.

Title: Re: Kinda Off Topic...Songs At Your Funeral
Post by: Sleepyskull on February 07, 2010, 09:58:20 AM
I would also like my family and friends to have a party instead of a traditional funeral.
I would like them to consider it a celebration of my life.

As for songs:

I can think of a massive amount but two really good ones might be:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgzGwKwLmgM

Don't Stop Me Now - Queen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98P-gu_vMRc

Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra

By the way when I die I want to be shot out of a cannon into a brick wall, stuffed and posed like an angry bear, or mounted on the wall like a fish.

I always tell my wife to play the Iowa State fight song at my funeral.  I insist on standing everytime it is played.  So if they play it at my funeral, and I don't stand up, that means I must really be dead.

I was at my maternal Grandfather's funeral today and although I felt very sad at points, the service was absolutely beautiful... It got me thinking very seriously about my funeral and how I would want to be represented.

As for music I would want to a mixture of songs that represented me, songs I liked, and songs that would appeal to my (sometimes sick) sense of humor:

Dust in the Wind - Kansas

Hall of the Mountain Grill - Hawkwind

Think of me with Kindness - Gentle Giant

Into the Fire - Dokken

Don’t Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

Highway to Hell - AC/DC

Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen

The Song is Over - The Who

Everybody's a Star (Starmaker) - The Kinks

I Am a Rock - Simon and Garfunkel

Strawberry Fields Forever - Todd Rundgren

Me! I Disconnect from You - Gary Numan/Tubeway Army

I Love the Night - Blue Oyster Cult

Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) - David Bowie

Falling in Love Again - Klaus Nomi

Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead - Klaus Nomi

Princes of the Universe - Queen

Antmusic - Adam and the Ants

I'm not sure what order to put them in.

Hymns: Onward Christian Soldiers [sung very well, please!]
The school hymns Lord Behold Us With Thy Blessing at the beginning and Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing at the end.
The people can leave to the sound of The Raiders March from Raiders Of The Lost Ark: my favourite piece of film music.  :teddyr:

I wouldn't mind stealing a page from Red Dwarf and using Bill Haley's "See You Later Alligator."

And I think I've shared the story about my wife doing a funeral for a 20-year-old car crash victim, where a mixed cd of his favourite songs was playing in the background. By sheer random chance, the casket, minister and funeral directors ended up coming down the aisle to the opening strains of AC/DC's Thunderstruck. That would almost be worth requesting.

Small Spaces by Pink Floyd

Fire by Arthur Brown

So Hott by Kid Rock, as a going away message  :teddyr:

And for the funeral march I want Streetbeater (Sanford and Son theme) to be played.

And for the funeral march I want Streetbeater (Sanford and Son theme) to be played.

Now that is a great idea. I can just imagine that.

Not quite related, but I used to say, back when I had some interest in politics in my hometown, that if I was someday elected mayor, I'd enter the swearing in ceremony to The Imperial March. :teddyr:

How many songs do I get?

Excluding seasonal songs like "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "Joy to the World,' and "Watchman, Tell Us of the Night," I thought about starting with "Amen," as there is a really good rendition of it in "Lilies of the Field," but having tried to sing it and knowing how hard it is to sing, I think I'll start with "The Lonesome Valley."

There's not a very good rendition of it in "The Ox-Bow Incident," but you have to love the words to it. "You got to walk . . . that lonesome valley . . . You got to walk . . . it by yourself . . . No one else . . . can walk it for you . . . You got to walk it by yourself."
The Kingston Trio had a hit with it under the title "The Reverend Mister Black." As a side note I miss the folk song era. Unlike today, songwriters really knew how to put an emotional whomp in their songs. Both the sad songs and the happy songs.

Then "Nearer My God to Thee." There is a great scene in the 1953 "Titanic," totally untrue, but a great scene nevertheless of having all the passengers left on board, after all the lifeboats have left, singing "Nearer My God to Thee."

People joke about bagpipes, but you ought to hear "Amazing Grace" played on the bagpipes. Just a great rendition. So, you have to have that.

Actually, if I had my druthers, I'd have a steam calliope preceding my last journey from the funeral home to the cemetery, but we were talking about songs. So, here are a few more I'd like played at my funeral.

A Mighty Forgress Is Our God
Children of the Heavenly Father
Have Thine Own Way
How Great Thou Art
I Will Sing the Mercies of the Lord
Jesus Savior, Pilot Me
Kumbaya
Rock of Ages
and Trust and Obey

I think that's enough.
