Title: Name that bad movie....
Post by: Sakerson on May 27, 2001, 10:21:18 PM
Hey there!  Hoping someone could help me out.  I saw this movie on TV when I was a kid.  It's a sword and sorcery flick about a guy who has these magic arrows that explode when they hit (actually, everyone falls to the ground as the color is reversed, but you get the idea).  He gets the arrows from this crow who is the equivalent of a guardian angel or some such.  A feather from the crow falls to the ground and turns into a quiver of arrows.  I know it's not Hawk the Slayer.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Sorry, no -- sounds made for TV though --

Uh, Crow the Slayer?

Seriously, this could be Archer: Fugitive from the Empire (1981), a made for TV flick with continual cross fades instead of cuts, constant action that doesn't coherently tell a story, and special effect designs possibly cribbed from a few unimaginative D&D sessions.

Of course, individual tastes on this, uh, movie may vary....

Looked it up on IMDB.com, and that sounds like the one.  Yeah, it's probably pretty bad (lot of others in this category).  It was the first Fantasy movie I had ever really seen (blew me away when I saw it, probably looks like crap now).  Thanks for the info.

Most definitely Archer.  I watched it when it was broadcast too and loved it.  I remember it being called Archer.  I think it was supposed to be the pilot for a series that was never made.  The main character Archer, inherited the magic bow from his father (uncle? mentor?) who was killed by a really cheesy looking monster.  The arrows were delivered by a magical crow.  He was pursued for some reason by a baddie with an ax I think.  They end up in some magician/scientist's castle and the scientist has constructed a magical gauntlet that has super-whoopie magic powers like the bow.  The bad dude with the ax shows up and puts on the magic gauntlet and then he and the archer duke it out.  I don't remember much more than that, but I liked it.  I would like to see it again just to see how badly it has aged.

I liked it because it appealed to my D&D sensibilities (I was an avid player at the time).  It was much better than the Tom Hanks' Mazes and Monsters anti-D&D movie.

It holds up fairly well, much better than "The Sword and the Sorcerer," but much worse than "Krull."  The prior is still entertaining though, just for different reasons than in the old days.

It sure is (on VHS):

DISCLAIMER:  I do receive a fee if you buy it via that link.

The bad news is that it's expensive, the good news is that they can now get it in 1-2 weeks instead of 4-6.  The print quality is pretty good.
