Title: Where are the DVDs . . . huh?
Post by: The Burgomaster on January 30, 2003, 01:45:51 PM
I am still (impatiently) waiting for the following DVD releases (widescreen ONLY!) I'd like to hear from the rest of you about movies you would like to see on DVD.

The Hills Have Eyes

The Brood

Beyond the Door

The Fantastic Four (not the copies that are floating around on Ebay, but a legitimate release!)

Willard (I assume the remake will encourage someone to release the original on DVD)

Ben

Puppet on a Chain

The Blood Eaters

Squirm

King Frat

I was a Teenage Werewolf

and (completely out of character for this list) The Friends of Eddie Coyle

I believe that a few of the above are available from overseas, but they are generally expensive ($35.00 or more). Where the hell are the U.S. releases???

Here's a few I'm crossing my fingers for:

The Mutilator

Nailgun Massacre

Don't Go in the Woods

Title: Roger Corman...PAID OFF!
Post by: Todd R. on January 30, 2003, 07:44:03 PM
I read an article a few years ago which described why THE FANTASTIC FOUR was never distributed via home video. Corman's studio was paid a nice sum of money to shelve the whole thing so as not to compete--or mar the public image--of the big-budget film that was supposed to be directed by Chris Columbus. This came as a complete surprise to the film's cast, and I remember that at least one of the stars expressed a sincere feeling of betrayal over the whole thing. Unless the "Corman payoff" has some kind of expiration date, I doubt that the existing version is going to get a legitimate video or DVD release anytime soon.

Actually, Roger Corman *never* intended to release the FF movie. In a nutshell, this is what happened:

Some film production company had the rights to make a FF movie, but development hell prevented them from getting started. Soon they found that the contract was about to expire.

However, when they looked at the contract, they saw a loophole. There was a clause that said that if they started production of a workable FF movie, then they could make another one. Of course, this was originally intended by Marvel to give the company permission to make a sequel, but the way it was worded gave the production company a way out.

They realized if they made something that could technically be called a FF movie, they could get the contract extended. Naturally, they would want to make it as cheap as possible. So they approached Roger Corman with not more than $2 million dollars and commissioned him to make a FF movie (and NOT release it), and he agreed.

Only Corman and a few others associated with the movie knew from the start the movie would never be released. I remember reading an issue of Film Threat that interviewed the actors (and had some pictures showing the generally tacky nature of the movie), and they seemed genuinely excited about the movie despite its low budget. Of course, they were pretty upset when they eventually learned the movie would not be released.

I am really puzzled why THE HILLS HAVE EYES has never been released on DVD, especially since the awful part 2 is being released on DVD later this year! All I can guess is (1) the copyright is currently being contested by more than one party, or (2) the copyright holder is sitting on the movie until he gets offered an incredible amount of money. (One example of the latter is JUST BEFORE DAWN)

NAIL GUN MASSACRE was recently re-released... but on VHS only for some reason! Still that might mean it has a chance in the future.

I will end this post with some good news... SQUIRM is getting a DVD release later this year by MGM! Not only will it be the uncut R-rated version, but it will include commentary by the director.

how about From Beyond?
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?
Orgazmo?
Toxic Avenger 4(I know it is going to come, but when, DAMN IT!, WHEN?????????)?
Puppet Master series?
Beyond Re-Animator?(yeah, I know it's in the works, but when will it be released?)
Is Bride of Re-Animator on DVD?  I guess not since I'm one of the only people who seem to like it.

About a year ago on this message board, I read that a Anchor Bay was releasing a DVD of "Mitchell" (the uncut version, not the MST3K version). It would have behind the scenes footage, interviews, trailers, and deleted scenes. I REALLY want to see that. Hopefully with a Joe Don Baker commentary!
As far as I know, there haven't been any American or Canadian made DVD releases of "Godzilla 1985," "Godzilla vs. Megalon," and "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster." I'd like those.
I would also like to see DVDs of
"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians"
Ed Wood's "Sinister Urge" and "Crossroads Avenger"
"Red Zone Cuba" (uncut version)

They have a Santa Claus Conquers the Martians release out by Catcom.  Catcom dvds are hard for some people to find, so I suggest checking ebay.  The only one I see on ebay is being sold out of the UK: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3308123641&category=18843

I have seen this movie around, but have never rented it.  Which is sort of odd for me, I mean the title alone is right up my alley of preffered films.  I am guessing that since ppl want it released on dvd that it is good.

HELL YEAH!! The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Great flick. I'm a big Mitchum fan, and I like anything set in Boston...I even liked Spenser for Hire!!

It may sound weird, but I want a DVD of Harold Lloyd's "The Milky Way" so bad. (Co-starring Helen Mack from "Son of Kong" and Lionel Stander from "Hart to Hart") Asskickingly funny.

I never want to sit through "Puppet On A Chain" again, for reason mentioned in the "Disturbing Scenes" thread. I was literally stunned, like I'd been punched hard right in the face. (Of course, I was a lot younger when I saw it.)

I just discovered the "3 Stooges" DVDs. Bit overdark, but awwwwwwyeah.

You're right about the contract loophole and the "let's make any movie we can, no matter how bad" angle of the film's production. I'd forgotten that the film was made with the secret intention of just shelving it, and I can't blame the actors for any hard feelings they might have over such a huge waste of their time...

If you want to spend insane amount of money you can find the puppetmaster series box set floating around, but since it was pulled from shelves, used dvd shops and ebay seem to be the only option.

Title: I think you know what movies I want on DVD
Post by: Chris K. on February 01, 2003, 02:34:20 PM
I am patently awaiting for MGM to start raiding their vaults for the following films:

EMPIRE PICTURES
Ghost Warrior (1984)
The Dungeonmaster (1984)
Trancers (1985)
From Beyond (1986)
Dolls (1986)
TerrorVision (1986)
Eliminators (1986)
Troll (1986)
Zone Troopers (1986)
The Caller (1987)

AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL PICTURES sci-fi flicks
The Day the World Ended (1956-in it's original 2.35:1 Superscope)
The Beast With a Million Eyes (1956)
It Conquered the World (1956)
The Amazing Colosal Man (1957)
Invasion of the Saucer-Men (1957)
Earth vs. the Spider (1958)
War of the Colossal Beast (1958-with the ORIGINAL color ending)

Also, Anchor Bay Entertainment also has the rest of the New World Pictures films from early 83' to 90', and they too have the Empire films Prison (1986), Ghost Town (1987), Cellar Dweller (1987), and Transformations (1988).

And yes, MGM is going to release SQUIRM on DVD in it's original R rated cut this upcoming August. I must tell you, I am excited about this release. Plus, this April the MGM Midnite Movie DVD release has INVISIBLE INVADERS (1959)/JOURNEY TO THE SEVENTH PLANET (1962) and PSYCH-OUT (1969)/THE TRIP (1969). Again, I am quite excited.

BTW, just to leave a small note on the FF movie.
There are actually files of it on Kazaa for download.

I've checked it out...I think the film not being released was actually a blessing to us all.

I was at Best Buy today (finaling getting my favorite movie Return of the Living Dead along with the Deranged/Motel Hell DVD set) and they had a lot of the movies that you mentioned there. They have a lot of good movies you just have to look.  Unfortunalty I found most of the movies there that I got off of Ebay already , and payed out the ass for shipping and handling.

It was the Full Moon Release, just a copy of the Vestron Video laserdisc, but it looks decent, has some forty minutes of trailers on the b-side and a fistful of biographies for the cast.  Not a bad deal for 9.95 retail.

From Beyond is tied up by Brian Yuzna, who wants to do some kind of restored Special Edition, so once all the Is and Ts are dotted and crossed and whoever gets whatever amount of money they're asking for, it should happen.

2004 or 5 is my guesstimate.

Is Brian planning on aquiring the film in his name a la RE-ANIMATOR and going to release it with either MGM or Elite Entertainment? Either way, I am really excited about this one. I hope audio commentaires are also in order if this hapens. Also, did he mention anything about obtaining DOLLS?

Yeah, I heard about the Full Moon Release of TRANCERS, transfered from the old laserdisc. I might go out and rent it (I know a nice Mom and Pop store that has it for rental). But IF the film will ever be released on the MGM Midnite Movies label, it would be letterboxed at 1.85:1 and I would go for that too. But, only time will tell.

Not a clue, I just know that Yuzna has talked about wanting an expanded cut/special edition of the movie getting released - evidently there was some stuff left on the cutting room floor either he or Gordon want back in the movie.  When, or if, that happens, I'm making a pre-order, that much is certain.

But Dolls?  You got me there, but, oddly, I would actually prefer a full frame presentation over a letterboxed one for one small reason.  When I saw it in the theaters, there was a shot where a doll was set aflame and danced around, sadly the fire illiuminated the BROOMSTICK that was attached to it for the effect.  On the Vestron Video release the gaff was cropped off with no other visible trouble to the remainder of the movie.  But that is just me.  A Gordon commentary would be nice.

Would it?  The image has no shifting or visible cropping (the images are well centered with plenty of space for the credits).  Chances are that image would just be a cropped one, where they just slap black bars at the top and bottom of frame to matte at a 1:85:1 aspect ratio - this is a pretty standard practice across the board since video exploded back in the early eighties, everybody from Disney to Cannon did it. (Captain Ron, Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 are all movies shot in that manner).  One can only hope for a Band/Thomerson commentary, unless Thomerson is P.O.ed at Band (like many, many others apparently are) - then we can just get the pleasure of hearing Jack Deth beat the snot out of Charles Band for a few minutes.

Still if a Midnight Movies edition of Trancers ever came out, that would be nice.

Hey, what about a Ghoulies dual disc?  MGM has got to own the rights to Ghoulies 1 and 2!

You took the words right out of my mouth there, Chadzilla. Since both GHOULIES and GHOULIES 2 are part of the early Empire features, it would be nice to see MGM issue both on DVD. But if this does happen in the near future, I expect to see the 20 minutes of excised footage (which, I might add, has been included in most television prints) of GHOULIES as a special feature,  as well as a sound upgrade (the old Vestron Video release of GHOULIES had the worst sound volume).

But, I think it would be better if GHOULIES was paired up with TROLL (1986) as both have a fun charm to them. GHOULIES 2 just didn't sit well with me and I would place that sequel as the "less-favorite" Empire film. But, we shal have to wait and see if MGM has plans.

The DERANGED/MOTEL HELL dvd is disappointing because DERANGED is not the complete version. It is the complete THEATRICAL RELEASE version, but it is missing some footage that was restored in Moore Video's VHS release that came out in the late 1980s or so. The restored version has a scene of Ezra Cobb popping an eyeball out of a decapitated head, and sticking a spoon into the brains.

>>>Puppet Master series?

Yeah, and then they could take the chapter stop out between "Part 4" and "Part 5" so that they would be showing the 4th movie in it's entirety.

Heh. Just being mean, but it was really annoying when they did this is PM 4/5, Trancers 4/5 and Oblvion/Backlash. Full Moon was trying to get away with murder by releasing half films back in the 90's.
