Title: What movie is actually SCARY?
Post by: Paquita on February 03, 2003, 01:59:59 AM
Maybe this was covered sometime in the past but to find that out involves a lot of clicking, loading, and effort. No!  So what movies are really SCARY!? and not disturbing or just gross  but SCARY! not biblical scary either cos thats not fair cos the Bible is scary.
Anytime I ask this I'm always told Suspiria and the Exorcist. I'll admit they are good and they are creepy but the soundtrack to Suspiria was scarier than the movie. and the exorcist just doesnt scare me.  But I'm a big wuss any movie scares me the first 8 times I see it and give me nightmares for months even Glitter kinda scared me! But very few movies ever stick in my head as REALLY scary so that i DONT want to see them again.
I just watched the Japanese version of The Ring.. I haven't see the white folks version yet, and THAT was scary! if it wasnt so blurry and i didnt have to try so hard to read white type on a white background it MIGHT have been scarier.. or less scary.  But it was GooDd! i had nightmares!! im scared! i DONT want to see it again! well i do but not now! i DO want to see part 2 and 3 but not at night!  The only other movies that really scared me were The Seventh Sign .. only because i was like 6 when i saw it and the end of the world is scary to me no matter how old i am but especially when i was 6 and the blob thing in the lake from Creepshow 2 really scared me too! but i was also really young then  but i still wont swim if theres a "No Swimming" sign and I'll insist theres a monster in the lake. and any movie about lots of bugs scares me but that doesnt count either cos its bugs. i still like bug movies but they dont count as scary! Bugs and the Bible have an unfair advantage they dont count!
So whats really scary?!

love colleen

p.s. dont complain about my grammar! this is too important a matter for proper grammar and punctuation!

Only one film springs to mind and that's "A Nightmare On Elm Street".

The first one.

When it was released in 1984 I was 10 years old and it scared the s**t out of me!

I had nightmares for days after watching it.

I recently watched it again for the first time in 10 years or so and I have to admit that it still scared me (though not as bad as it originally did).

I can still hear the screeeeeech of Freddy's finger knives on metal.

I don't know what it was, but Lucio Fulci's Gates of Hell scared the living s**t out of me when I watched it at two in the morning with no lights.

Ghost Story (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0082449) scared me when I was younger.  Problem would again, but I haven't seen it in a long time

Ghost Story scared me as well, maybe because I saw it on the late show when I was a kid. But I do remember it creeping me out. Conversely, I wasn't terribly frightened by A Nightmare on Elm Street. I was about 9 when it came out, and I may have been less frightened because I had heard that Freddy was played by the nerdy alien from V. Still, it was pretty damned creepy. And, truly, The Exorcist scared hell out of me. I watched the entire movie standing in the kitchen, looking through a small sliding window that looked into the room where the tv was. That's right, I was too afraid to be in the same room with the movie! Hey, I was like 11 years old. Now, I can at least stand at the edge of the room! Also, Staying Alive scared me. I knew that if that movie was a hit, there would be ANOTHER Travolta, disco flick...YIPES.

I'd recommend  'Session 9'  (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0261983) as being pretty damn scary.  Scary in that 'creepy' way. No lame jump scares as far as I remember, and it's not scary to the point of disturbing.  I don't like films that really go to the point of disturbing ('American Psycho' springs to mind, found nothing enjoyable in that film, just disturbing), but with S9 I kinda got dragged into it and kind of felt 'well done, you got me' which dosent happen to me that much anymore.

Difficult question. It depends on what your personal phobias are. My personal recommendations would be...

1) The Shinning (Kubrick's, of course).

2) The 6th sense (It has some real tense moments).

3) Session 9 (the setting alone makes me feel restless)

4) The Others (Alright, not that scary, but has its moments).

5) Bride of Re-animator (Don't ask me why, but I found the idea of returning from death transformed into a monster scared me beyond any limits)

the only movie that still creeps me out is ROSEMARY'S BABY...from the creepy "la-la-la" music at the beginning to the scene where people are creeping around behind rosemary in her apartment...watch it alone and in the dark. creepy stuff...

I was faced with this very same question not too long ago when I was sauntering through the horror aisle the other night. Some people were also showing interest in the enormous horror section, so I started talking to them, and one wanted something that would "scare the sh*t outof her." And damnit if I couldn't think of any! I've been so engrossed in the bad horror movies, I had forgotten about the good horror movies! My only suggestions were if you didn't know the real story behind the Blair Witch Project, that would be a good one. But that was it! I too am interested in finding out what some good, SCARY movies are!

The Ring (Japanese) is very good scary movie, because it builds a spooky feeling in the movie (I dont speak any japanese either, but this movie is very good with subtitles)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my pick. It just feels so REAL.

The only movie that scared the crap out of me is "Invasion of the bodysnatchers" (1978???) I think the idea on not sleeping and when you do you never wake up...

Vermin Boy hit this one on the head - Texas chainsaw has quite a few moments of pure terror. The scene of the ultra-closeups on the girl's eyes near the end of the movie were enough to freak me out.

The movie "Terror in the Aisles" pretty much summed up that people enjoy fear. Having a loss of control over your emotions and having to wait to figure out what happens next is a pretty cool rush.

Movies like the exorcist and texas chainsaw are good but knowing too much about them takes away from the experience.

I also enjoyed seeing Silence of the Lambs in the theater - there's nothing like Anthony Hopkins' teeth taking up a whole movie screen and seeing...well, if you haven't seen it, give it a try. Pretty scary.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS is scary.

ROSEMARY'S BABY is also scary (but in a religious way). Unfortunately, the movie confuses Witchcraft with Satanism, and they are completely different beliefs. Witches do not worship Satan (I know, because my ex-girlfriend practiced Witchcraft and she cleared up the misconception for me).

I like SUSPIRIA, but I don't find it very scary. It isn't even Dario Argento's best movie. I think that DEEP RED, TENEBRAE and BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE are better. They are not really scary, but they are extremely suspenseful.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is pretty scary, too. It would be VERY scary if it had better acting.

THE SENTINEL was one of the scariest books I ever read, but the movie really stunk. They should remake it with a better director.

THE OTHER, (made in the mid 1970s and not to be confused with Nicole Kidman's THE OTHERS) is pretty creepy, too. I wish they would release it on DVD.

ERASERHEAD will give you nightmares, too.

I actually find Death Of A Salesman to be the scariest movie ever made. Why? Because there are people just like that living and dying each day, all victims of overwork and corporations.

I forgot about Texas Chainsaw Massacre! that was really scary too.. but it wasnt scary in a "THE DEVILS UNDER THE BED AND HES GONNA STICK DEMONS UP MY BUTT!!" sorta way it had more of an unsolved mysteries sorta thing to it  and made me not want to go outside or talk to strangers ever again Last House on the Left was the same way! that was really scary too!! it was really bad i never wanna see tha movie again! EVER! i completely blocked that one out of my head til now.. but it wasnt fun scary it was sad scary!
Nightmare on Elmstreet i really LOVE with a PASSIOn but it never scared me too much even when i was little and i was 2 when it came out.. Tina.. im pretty sure thats her name.. in the body bag calling to Nancy was really scary tho! thats probably one of the scariest parts.. blood blasting from the bed was fun  girls talking in body bags is HOT ..i mean scary! and freddy's just too cute to be scary! and he had a good reason to kill all them kids!! they never gave him a chance man! he just wanted to be loved!
POLTERGEIST is a good one!! for little kids anyway! i really liked it when i was little! the part where Mom falls in the pool and all the dead bodies are everywhere! that made me cry!! and then id watch it again! and then id scare my mom staring at fuzzy tvs! i really liked the shining too!! but now i just think of it more as a fun movie to watch. the only other fulci movies ive seen was phenomena and one other one but i forgot the name.. phenomena was was the OPPOSITE of scary but still kinda good! all the movies that Goblin does the soundtrack for are really suspensful!  but it was all backward in suspiria! youd think "OH MY GOD SOMETHING AWFULS GONNA HAPPEN!! and then some girl just makes a really dumb face and that was the big thing.. it was OVER suspensful.. old ladies snoring does not deserve a huge build up.  i heard Eraserhead was really good! i havent seen that one yet!! i been meaning to tho! i should go get that one!

love colleen

I still cannot watch the scene from "Salem's Lot" where the vampire boy is floating and scratching and tapping on the Hospital window.  I was eight when I saw it on network TV in 1979; I just rented the DVD and I still have to fast-forward it through that part.

Also the movie "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", with the little Conehead demons.

Well, First, I will mention the Others as a movie that truly impressed me and scared me. Honestly. I also will mention the Exorcist, it is too damn scary. Invasion of the Bodysnatchers scares me too.

Honestly, possesions scare me, and the best actually scary movies I have seen on that front are The Omen and The Evil Dead.

Second, the sea does scare me, because there is nothing to do on the water. Jaws scared me like no other and still is excellent today. Spielburg's first film Duel was truly terrifying.

As for slasher flicks, if you havent seen Scream, it is truly scary, and yes the first I know what you did last summer was scary.

Not many others scare me. The Ring had a few moments, but was more of a mystery than a scare.

When I was young, Stephen king's It scared the s**t out of me when I was 8, I still havent finished it and I still sometimes look  at the shower drain.

Having read some of the other replies, I'm reminded of some of the crap that spooked me. That floating vampire-boy scene is pretty creepy, I mean s**t,dude, I know he's your brother...but he's your DEAD brother. Leave the window closed, dumbass. I had totally forgotten about Poltergeist, I was pretty young when I saw that one, scared hell out of me, the part with the bodies in the pool, anyway. Pete B6K nailed it with Session 9, that is a creepy ass flick. I wonder if films scare me less now because I'm older or if I just saw all of the really spooky ones when I was a kid.

Title: The Hitcher
Post by: nshumate on February 04, 2003, 12:10:13 PM
The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer scared the bejeezus outta me when I saw it.  That's been a dozen years now; it's probably time for me to revisit it.

Watched this one by Dan O'Bannon based on an H.P. Lovecraft story the other night and it had some genuinely heart-pounding moments.  Movies don't give me nightmares, but that one did have my hand inching towards the stop button on the remote.

I thought that Alien was scary the first time around.
I thought Francis was terrifying because of the concept
Night of the Living Dead is the only movie I've ever had a nightmare inspired by
John Carpenter's The Thing inspires a genuine sense of paranoia

Here are some that creeped me out;

The Haunting (old version) - had some very creepy moments.

Haunted - Aidan Quinn stars as a professor investigating a haunting.

Gargoyles - Made for TV movie. Some might think the effects are cheesy now, but watch it alone at night, then take a walk outside. :)

Don't be Afraid of the Dark - I know someone already mentioned it, just wanted to second it.

Yes . . . DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK . . . I forgot that one. It's possibly the scariest "made for television" movie I have ever seen.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark scared me so bad as a kid even the mention of it kept me awake.

The only movie that still scares me every time I watch it is John Carpenter's The Thing.  The very idea that anyone, or anything, might turn into a monster and then turn YOU into a monster is simply terrifying.  I never looked at a dog the same way again.

The saint francisville experiment was pretty good in the scary department, a rip off of blair witch, but still scary none the less.  Had the most realistic ghost scene ever.

I have to with Texas Chainsaw, I watched it alone, in the dark, knowing almost nothing about it beforehand, and that was the only time I was ever really SCARED by a movie.

I also think Bram Stoker's Dracula (directed by Francis Ford Coppola) was pretty frightening just because it was so vivid, but I can't say I was ever really scared while watching it.

THE EXORCIST still does it for me....and hey, if you have the 25th anniversary DVD, check out the "Flash Image" trailer if you think THE EXORCIST isn't scary....I can't believe they played that trailer anywhere, much less on TV!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, definitely....

The trailers for CARRIE, THE SHINING, and THE GATES OF HELL all scared me when I was little kid.

I vote for SALEM'S LOT too!  I remember when it was first broadcast....I was at my grandpa's with my cousin and before we went to bed my grandpa said "Don't let no vampires in..."  Scared us both to death!

There was another made for tv movie during the 70s/early 80s but I don't remember the title--it was about a girl who tied her sister's shoelaces together while they were riding in a car...which promptly wrecked and the sister wasn't able to get away in time.  The sister's ghost is living under the girl's bed or something...I don't remember the title but it really creeped me out when I was around eight or nine years old.

This has a LOT do do with the age of the movie-goer.  I remember that damn cowardly lion jumping out of the woods and scaring me to death.  I think  I ran in the kitchen and pee-pee'd my drawers.   Moving along to my teenage years  - Beyond the Door -  I had nightmares for two weeks.  I'd wake up sweating like crazy; have to throw the pillow in the dryer.  I jumped and did the homer simpson Doh!  a few times during  - Alien - .   Lately,  - The Ring - I thought had some very creepy, if not scary moments.  And after 126,236,543,021 Horror/Sci-fi movies, I don't scare easily.
