You could talk about bad sci-fi films in the '40's and '50's, then move on to porno and blaxploitation in the '70's, bad horror movies and rip-offs of good movies (like Jaws) and excessive sequils in the '80's, and the decline of theatrical releases and increase of straight-to-video schlock in the '90's. You'll need to cite many examples, so go to the imdb (www.imdb.com) for information and try to rent a good number of each of these kinds of bad movies if you have time.
You can also talk about why people watch bad movies. Some like to make fun of them (good section to introduce the MST3k factor,) while others truly enjoy their campiness and utter idiocy. You can also add a little comedy to your act by citing examples of outrageously bad happenings in bad movies, such as the bad special effects and stupid titles (Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent, etc.) I hope that helped. This genre goes hand-in-hand with monster movies. There's the lame and hackneyed action movie genre, too, which was embraced in the 1980's thanks to Sylvester Stalone. There's blaxploitation, which was famous in the 1970's, with Rudy Ray Moore being a prime example of a blaxploitation actor. He was in such movies as Petey Wheatstraw, the Devil's Son-In-Law and the Dolemite series. The 1990s was a confused jumble of these genres.
If you're going to talk about bad movies, you have to mention Ed Wood, one of the most famous bad movie directors in the history of cinema. He made "Plan 9 from Outer Space," "Bride of the Monster," and "Glen or Glenda," to name a few of his most famous works, which all came out during the 1950s. Some famous actors: Peter Graves (Parts: The Clonus Horror, It Conquered the Earth, and The Beginning of the End,) Rudy Ray Moore (see above,) Tor Johnson (Plan 9 from Outer Space, Bride of the Monster, The Unearthly, The Beast of Yucca Flats,) Bela Lugosi (Plan 9 from Outer Space, Glen or Glenda, The Unearthly) John Agar (Revenge of the Creature, The Mole People) I don't know exactly when or why the bad movie "cult" following came into existance. First, they are fun to make fun of or "MST," a term that is derived from the television show Mystery Science Theater 3000, a show famous for making fun of bad movies. (This show is an important part of the bad movies history. Go to www.mst3k.com for the show's official homepage or go to "www.mst3kinfo.com" for the show's information club's webpage.) Second, I often find bad movies in their own right. Many of them are so bad that they're good. Third, there's just something about them that allows me to take pleasure in them despite the fact that they're bad that I can't really describe. You have to be a bad movie fan to understand.
