Gladiator - The first battle scene brings it up front and the arena is good. Spartacus - The Gladiator school is still a good piece of cinema. Starring Kurt Douglass. Quo Vidas - Long great film about ancient Rome. Marching Roman Legions. Barnabas - Anthony Quinn as a gladiator. Alexander the Great - Older Ancient Greece film but not historical stars Richard Burton, but its all we have about the great leader Alexander. Conan the Barbarian - A pre-history film that has some great philosophy and characters. One of Arnolds first real films. Jason and the Argonauts - A greek mythology film with special affect by Hassenhauer(spelling). I especially enjoyed Peter Ustinov's portrayal of Nero. His reaction to Petronius' (Leo Genn's) last letter to him . . . ROTFL. But, I would like to suggest three movies that I thought were better then "Gladiator."
(1) "Ben Hur" for its chariot scene and naval battle. (2) "The Sign of the Cross" for its gladiator scenes. No one does them better then C. B. DeMille. See Amazon vs. African Pygmy. See Man vs. Bull. See Man vs. Elephant. See Man vs. Man. Fighting with cestuses (spelling?) on their hands. And if you get the precode version: See Naked Woman vs. Crocodiles. (3) and "Fall of the Roman Empire," to which "Gladiator bares a surprising similiarity. But, I find (IMO) "Fall of the Roman Empire" much better. The acting is better. See Joaquin Phoenix go crazy, then see Christopher Plummer go crazy, and see which one is a better actor. The battle scenes are better, especially the first one. The lighting is better. I still remember how the first battle scene was lit with the sunlight filtering down through the tree leaves. And the spectacle is better. They had to do it the hard way in those days. Not with computers, but with real bodies. And I would like to recommend one more film. Technically, not a "sword and sandal" spectacular, but "Intolerance," especially "The Fall of Babylon" sequence, even almost 90 years later, still rocks.
