Title: Westerns.............................................
Post by: Scott on March 13, 2003, 11:18:13 PM
Well BoyScoutKevin you were absolutely correct. Just finished all those westerns and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Four out of Five were very painful after seeing the Sergio Leone westerns recently. Now I need to redeem the western by renting some promising westerns. Read at IMDB that these are actually good westerns.

1) Hombre (1967)
2) Valdez is Coming (1971)

Here's how I rate the ones I recently purchased.  Stay away from them, except "Chino".

1) Chino - Good Film
2) Bad Man's River - Bad Western Comedy.
3) Gods Gun - Bad Western, but memorable.
4) Gatling Gun - Almost a regular western
5) Cry Apache Blood - Ouch

So...is it wrong of me to say I liked Five Bloody Graves?
Hell, screw the westerns, go for mountain man flicks.  Jeremiah Johnson and Mountain Men rule.

Never really dug the whole Mountain Man scene, though I thought James Arness was cool in How the West Was Won. Hombre is a pretty tight flick, kinda low-key, but in a good way. Richard Boone(as always)plays the villain, andPaul Newman method-acts the hell out of his part. Definitely recommend it.

I haven't seen Valdez Is Coming, but I've read and heard good things. Does it star Burt Lancaster? Let me know how it turns out.

I'm a big Paul Newman fan, but I hated HOMBRE. It's one of those movies that causes you to say, "So, what exactly was the point?" when it is over.

Well, I just visited the Blockbuster that had it today and they took HOMBRE off the VHS shelve, so I won't be seeing that one anytime soon.

Yes, VALDEZ IS COMING is the one with Burt Landcaster. I let you know how it turns out this week. Blockbuster now has one week rentals.

Brother Ragnarok, I have seen JERAMIAH JOHNSON and liked it, and I'll look for MOUNTAIN MEN. Thats a new one to me. Thanks.

Both "Hombre" and "Valdez are Coming" are based upon novels by Elmore Leonard.
After Paul Newman made "The Hustler," "Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man," "Hud," "Harper," and "Hombre," rumor had it, that he would only appear in a film it it began with the letter "H."
Enjoy both films, Scott.

HOMBRE is great, and a change of pace from Newman's typical screen image as a likeable and amiable guy. And, yes, Richard Boone proves to be a supreme master of onscreen villainy ("You called me a dirty name....").

VALDEZ IS COMING is good but not nearly on the level of HOMBRE. Although the fact it deals with racism in the Old West, and not just the mistreatment of Indians, is interesting. Lancaster is good as a half-breed Mexican, but I still want to see someone remake the film with an actor like Benicio Del Toro in the lead.

Another excellent western based upon Elmore Leonard's work is 3:10 TO YUMA with Van Heflin and Glenn Ford. Worth seeking out.
