Title: 10 Hot Dog Buns and 8 Hot Dogs?
Post by: Neon Noodle on April 18, 2003, 10:32:25 PM
So what did everyone else think of Bulletproof Monk? I thought it was less of an action film and more of a Buddhist 101 lesson. Enjoyable, but I wanted to see a little more ass-whoopin'....

Did I mention that it was awful?

What happened to martial arts movies? Even Jackie Chan now uses wires sometimes to do some of his tricks. I liked it better when it was believeable and damn cool. I don't need some dude swinging around on a helicopter and jumping fifty million feet into the air.

And, it exists as a comic book.  I just never got the idea of Kung Fu as comic book material....just seen too many Kung Fu Theaters to want to watch it "stop motion", i guess.

Whenever I want to see a real martial arts movie, I get one from the 1970s. They were more fun when they were made on shoestring budgets and were badly dubbed. I recently picked up THE STREETFIGHTER set on DVD (from VCI). It has 4 movies, all widescreen, and much better quality than you would expect for the price (about $10.99).

Now THOSE are some fun ass-kickin' movies!

I also recommend anything by Bruce Lee (of course), and, for a "blaxploitation" twist, I recommend BLACK BELT JONES.

I'm thinking about grabbing The Street Fighter after reading a bit about it. Also I got into martial arts movies when jackie chan came out with rumble in the bronx which led me to watch lots of his older stuff. And the local rental store has Story Of Ricky and I really really want to rent it sometime but haven't found the time.
