Title: Hey...he's the star...hey he's also the executive producer....oh no!
Post by: Fearless Freep on April 28, 2003, 08:23:12 PM
Watched "Modern Vampires" this week and the best I can say is that it's usually not a good sign when the star (Casper Van Diem) is also somewhere in the production list.

The movie was ok, but rather confused as if it couldn't make up it' smind whether it was trying to be serious or a black comedy.  The whole obligatory Dr Van Helsing inclusion seemed pretty wasted here; comic relief with his tag-along crip ganster muscle.. The 'night in the life of a modern vampire' aspects were kinda instresting, portraying some of the vampires as just basically people getting on with day to day..er...night to night life, with some unusual pecularities to thier social life.

Ultimately it didn't leave much impression because it just didn't really seem to be about much of anything with any sort of focus.  Like all the vampire killings, the actual act of killing Count Dracula seemed much easier than the dialog would lead you to believe

For a modern vampire movie, I thought both "Innocent Blood" and "Dracula 2000" were a lot more interesting.

Try Cold Hearts for a look at vampirism from the vampire's point of view.

Thanks,John, for I'll have to look for that one as hard as I can(since Tom Savini also does the FX in that one).
Yeah, that's true about "Modern Vampires",but at least it had a super supporting cast(Rod Steiger,Kim Cattrell,Udo Kier,Natasha Lyonne)and plenty of mucho gore, raunchy sleaze and too-too-gratuitious nudity to help keep you distracted from the truly anemic presences of Van Dien and Natsha Gregson Wagner(who always seems to take off her clothes in almost every movie[not counting "Vampires:Los Muertos"] she's in,just to heavily make up for her pathetic attempts at acting).

True, I ended up being more interested in Kim and her husband's characters than I was in the principles.
