Title: Westerns: Gregory Peck
Post by: Scott on April 30, 2003, 11:38:22 AM
Encore Western Channel has shown some Westerns yesterday starring Gregory Peck. I didn't know he starred in so many westerns.

THE GUNFIGHTER (1950) - This is a good one. Mostly conversation about being a quick gun in the west. Gregory Peck plays Jimmy Ringo.

BILLY TWO HATS (1973) Gregory Peck is great in this one. He plays a bank robber who breaks his leg. This is an odd western that won't dissappoint.

MCKENNA'S GOLD (1969) The film stars Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif. It also has Telly Savalas, Edward G. Robinson, Eli Wallach, Burgess Meredeth. Its the search for mythical gold in the West. The photography of some the canyonlands of Arizona are some of the best ever in film. It's like a good western then it borders on fantasy with the discovery of gold in a hidden canyon. Great film. Loved it. Some of the special effects were fun also.

THE BRAVADOS - Neat ending. Peck plays a man looking for the wrong man.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON - Not sure if I seen this one, but will definately check it out if I get the chance.

If one wants to see Peck in a western, besides the ones named by Scott, here are some more of them.

Duel in the Sun
Or, as it was known around Hollywood, "Lust in the Dust." The film with seven directors, besides the credited King Vidor, Otto Bower, William Dieterle, Sidney Franklin, William Cameron Menzies, Josef Von Sternbert, and the producer David Ol Selznick had a hand at directing it. But, the cast can hardly be beat. Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Lionel Barrymore, Herbert Marshall, Lillian Gish, Walter Huston, Charles Bickford, Harry Carey, Butterfly McQueen, Otto Kruger, Sidney Blackmer, and Orson Welles as the narrator.

Yellow Sky
Anne Baxter, Richard Widmark, Harry Morgan, Jay Silverheels, and Hank Worden.

Only the Valiant
Reportedly, Peck's least favorite film, but, one that I enjoyed. The climatic Indian attack is something to see. With, Ward Bond, Gig Young, Neville Brand, Jeff Corey, Michael Ansara, and Lon Chaney, Jr. as an Arab.

The Big Country
Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston, Burl Ives, Charles Bickford, and Chuch Connors.

Enjoy them all. I did.
