Title: bad music: Schooly D's "Smoke Some kill"
Post by: mr Raffles on June 26, 2001, 05:04:01 PM
Have you ever heard this guy? He has like ten albums and he no skills to speak of.  Like all crapmasters, he writes produces and performs it himself.  His DJ, Code Money, is actually pretty good.  This LP. was released in 1988, but it could be from 1978.  He talks about how he hates rock'n'roll, how big his gold chain is, and samples Zepplin's "kashmir".  I know I compare everything to Plan 9 from Outer Space but it really applies here.  So why can't I stop listening to it?

All I know is that he appeared on one of the early episodes of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.  He also has one of my favorite rap names.

Never heard his music though.

He also has some songs on the film Bad Luitenant soundtrack (great, disturbing, cop-drama), I thought they were hilarious when I saw the film. One of them samples Kashmir, it's probably the same one you got.

Bad Lieutenant - ah grand stuff. This movie split opinion in our household right down the middle - my wife hates it, I think it's excellent. I also like most of  Abel Ferrara's output, except his version of Bodysnatchers - that story had already been done to death.

Schoolly-D. is actually once of the early pioneers of Rap music who helped usher in what Hip Hop fans call the "Golden Era" in rap music (1986 - 1990).  "Smoke Some Kill", his third release, is a typical Schoolly-D. album.  Schoolly's from the old school of rap where you bascially rap about something and put a funny spin on it (check out "Saturday Night - The Album).  Schoolly's also featured on the "King Of New York" soundtrack (where you'll parts of "Saturday Night" as well as "Am I Black Enough For You?".

As it may appear, I am a Schoolly School fan.  Laughed my butt off at his first few records which basically Richard Pryor on crack rhyming.....wait.....nevermind ;)
