Title: Best.... Villian... Ever
Post by: Evan3 on May 31, 2003, 08:51:23 PM
In my opinion there are three types of villians, the cool, the psychotic killers and the Zany fun ones.

My favorite cool villian, and by cool I mean they are efficient, and you wouldnt mind being them and you sort of hope they really do kill all the bad guys is:

The Predator: He is cool, has tons of weapons, hunts prey who have a fighting chance against him (not like those damn Bambi killers, regular hunting is so not a sport unless u use bows and arrows). He even makes jokes at his very death at the end of Predator 1 and prove that they are honorable in Predator 2. They could have sliced Danny Glover up, but he proved himself worthy and got hios life and a prize. Yeah.

Honorable Mentions: Bill Paxton's character in Vertical Limit, he is so mean he is cool and boy is it nice to see him get his just dessert)
Scar from the Lion King: He is smooth, calculating and can sing, Awesome
Deacon Frost from Blade 1: he is aweesome, he kills opeople and vampires with such a cavalier attitude and look at those women

My favorite psycho is by far:
Mike Myers - Yeah, he is such a madman. I love in the first Halloween when he stabs one male teen and pins him to the wall and just stares at him. It gives me the creeps.

Honorable mentions: Damien from the Omen, what a creepy kid, especially at the church freak out

Favorite Jokester
Jacobin Mugato from Zoolander: Will Ferell really just steals this awesome movie with his maniacal portrayal of a fashion nut, and the only one who can see past Blue Steel.

Runner Ups:
Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff Girls: his voice and his schemes and his attitude make him awesome
Dr. Evil: Hey, he can dance the Macarena, what more do you need.

What are some of yours, I am trying to compile a list of greatest villians, to go with Predator, Myers, and Mugatu

Especially when he does his Scottish old man routine...

Not just a single villain....but many.

The Nazis.

I just finished watching "The Pianist" and "Schindlers List".

When it comes to pure evil and sadistic cruelty no one tops them in my opinion.

hey Ash, try the Japanese, also in WWII.

i'm pretty sure Andrew knows a little about them and their infamous Unit 731 in Manchuria.  the movie "Man Behind the Sun" is based on the atrocities.

even Hitler was put off by the incredible cruelty of the Japanese.

1) Rutger Hauer in "Blade Runner", for the many layers of his character. Best villain ever, 'nuff said.

2) Rutger Hauer in "The Hitcher", for his ability to change from "nice guy" to "total psycho" in a couple pf seconds.

3) Clarence Bodicker in the first "Robocop", for plain cruelty and for being so antisocial (destroys the car of another gang member so his is the only cool one).

4) Scorpius in "Farscape": Witty, cruel (Remember when he left Crichton "speechless"?), cool suit and can appear inside your mind.

For me it must be Dr. Phibes from The Abominable Dr. Phibes. (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/phibes/)  You should feel for the good guys (Trout and the medical team), but Vincent Price's terrible wrath on those he feels are responsible for his wife's death is just too cool.

Or Dennis Hopper in anything, for that matter. My favorite is his Frank Booth from Blue Velvet: "Heinekin?! F*ck that sh*t! Pabst Blue Ribbon!!"

As far as favorite villains go, gotta go with the classis: Wile E. Coyote.

Professor Moriarty in the Sherlock Holmes films. I don't recall which particular film (the one where Lionel Atwill played Moriarty, I think), but 30 years BEFORE Phibes killed Terry-Thomas by draining his blood out s-l-o-w-l-y, Moriarty tried the same thing with Holmes.

The thing about Moriarty is he can be so cool, suave, and charming, drawing you in to his seductiveness, as it were....until it's too late for you! A nice reference/homage to Moriarty's charm is in the ST: TNG episode "Elementary, Dear Data", when Moriarty has Dr. Pulaski in his lair, is serving her tea and crumpets, and asks her "Aren't you frightened of me?". Pulaski responds "No, I'm not", and Moriarty (Daniel Davis) replies....after a momentary pause..."...You should be."

Herr Starr from the Preacher "Maxi-Series" graphic novels. This guy make just about everybody else on this list look like a poser or a pansy.

Some of my favorite villains (in no particular order) are:

* Angela Lansbury in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE

* John Cassevetes in ROSEMARY'S BABY

* Al Lettieri in THE GETAWAY

* All the guys who attack Dustin Hoffman's home in STRAW DOGS

* Gert Frobe in GOLDFINGER

* Yul Brynner in WESTWORLD

* Fernando Ray in THE FRENCH CONNECTION

* Oliver Reed in OLIVER!

* Andy Robinson in DIRTY HARRY

* Robert Shaw in THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE, TWO, THREE

* Alan Arkin in WAIT UNTIL DARK

* Harvey Keitel in TAXI DRIVER

And I'm sure I forgot a few . . .

Man Burgo, have you liked a bad guy since the seventies???

Has to be Khan Noonien Singh. He's intelligent, educated and charismatic, has genetically-enhanced strength and endurance, and can switch easily between charming, stone cold, and, when pushed far enough, stark raving mad.

Recently read the two-book Star Trek: The Eugenics Wars. Really added a lot to the character.

Actually, most of my posts will reveal that I haven't liked much of anything since the 70s.

I guess Hannibal Lecter and a few others should be on my list, but I'm really a product of 60s and 70s movie-making. Some of my greatest movie memories are from my days as a kid at the drive-in. Now, I watch DVDs of all those drive-in movies and reminisce.

* Sigh *

Sorry to break this news to you . . . but HITCHER 2 is coming out on DVD soon. Rutger Hauer is not in it, though. This time, C. Thomas Howell  meets up with Jake Busey. You can pre-order this on Deep Discount DVD's website (if you dare).

You're kidding, right?  Zoolander had to be one of THE most retarded movies ever made.

More an actor than a character, but Richard Boone in his hammy villain roles: "Hombre", "The Shootist", "Big Jake", He played the kind of villain you could root for. I guess I'd pick his character in "Big Jake" for his great lines ("Anything goes wrong,anything at all.  Your fault, our fault, nobody's fault, We won't wait, we won't try again, we'll just send that boy's body back to you in a basket"), his creepy charm ("There's my 'bon-e-fie-des'"), and his cunning (like playing dumb at parts and pretending to be one of the underlings rather than the leader).

Dr. Bruno Mabuse in the German suspense films featuring him. To me the best of the criminal mastermind/mad scientist type. Schemes within schemes within schemes. Underlings who never know who they're really working for. A true master of disguise, so good that the heroes don't trust each other because he could just as likely be hiding as one of them. So powerful and clever he even runs his criminal network from inside an insane asylum at times. But mad enough that when a plan fails in one film he screams "Victorious!" over and over again after his underlings have been killed or captured, his disguise is found out, the heroes have blasted their way into his hideout and it's burning down around him.

Not so much a villain, but probably the worst a***ole you ever want to be in a jail cell with is Lee Ermey, a.k.a. Drill Instructer, Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.  I saw the DVD while I was in Ft. Stewart.  Ladies and gentleman (and I think Andrew can attest to this assumption), Sgt. Hartman represented the old school military.  The kind of military where a drill seargent would make you p**s in your pants, then make you lick it off if you mess up his floor (and I thought my drill seargents were bad).  The way he asked question about you sexuallity ("Do you suck dicks?"), comment on where you're from ("Texas!  Only steers and queers come from Texas!"), and threats (something that has to do with gouging out eyes from the sockets and skull-f**king them).  Definitly a man to avoid.  Especially if your name is "Pyle".

Meteor Man can kick Superman's ass.

Rodger Delgado (or however the heck you spell his name) as "The Master" in Dr. Who.  Smooth, calculating, and just plain cool.

I must add Mr. Blonde from Resevoir Dogs, while I hated the movie, he was a brutal maniac.

Ahhnold as the  original Terminator--"I'll be back," but as a kinder, gentler robot in T2.
Yeah, Andy Robinson in Dirty Harry.
Personal favorite is Bruce Dern in Black Sunday---"Oooooooooooh, Elsa, look at the symetry!"

- Because even tho you agree with every "noble" word he says , even tho he looks how you want to look and f**ks how you wanna f**k he is still essentialy a terrorist. He still hurts people and blows up buildings....and you still like him

No Ming the Merciless?
Ernst Bloefeld or at least Auric Goldfinger "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die."
Darth Vader? Hello
James Earl Jones in Conan the Barbarian
Kahn Noonian Sing (Ricardo Montoblan and his rich corinthian leather) in Wrath of Kahn

And you call yourself a Doctor Who fan.  It's ROGER Delgado, not Rodger.

Sheesh.  Next you'll confuse a Dal with a Kaled.

The film is "Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon." Lionel Atwill. A great Moriarty, a great villain, and a great actor. Rathone and Atwill would also appear opposite each other in "Son of Frankenstein." Rathbone as Wolf von Frankenstein and Atwill as Inspector Krogh, he of the wooden arm. Though, this time, they woul;d be on the same side.
Rathbone would face two other Moriartys in the Sherlock Holmes series. George Zucco in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and Henry Daniell in "The Woman in Green." There again, both great Moriartys, both great villains, and both great actors.
Enjoy all the films!
