Title: GURU THE MAD MONK: Does this title sound familiar to those who heard the name "Guru" before?
Post by: Chris K. on July 07, 2001, 09:52:04 PM
Another Andy Milligan flick that I recently saw was GURU THE MAD MONK (1971). Okay, so it's not one of Milligan's best features (his best was THE BODY BENEATH, and that is saying alot), but it is entertaining nonetheless.

Plot is pretty simple. On the island of Mortavia, Father Guru (played by Neil Flanagan) tortures prisoners at The Old Souls Church. But, Guru ends up killing inocent people who end up at his church. The rest of the 62 minute film is so-so.

Filmed on location at the St. Peter's Church of Manahatan, GURU THE MAD MONK is well known by title alone. Also, it was Milligan's first film that he shot in 35mm format insead of 16mm. But, GURU THE MAD MONK shared a double-bill with THE BODY BENEATH when released by Nova International Productions. I also saw it's original trailer and let me tell you that if I saw this film advertised in the 1970's, I would have rushed to the theatre like that!

Questions or comments anyone?

The name sound familiar but I think I'm think of the hammer film called Rasputant the Mad Monk, and when you went to the theater to see it they would give you a beard.  neat huh? I think I remeber seeing another film, or at least the cover box for a film called Guru about a giant turtle thing, but I was never in to those Godzilla type flicks, so I may be wrong.   About the film you're talking about, I've heard  of it, but that doesn't mean much.
