Title: Is something wrong with this board?
Post by: Ash on August 23, 2003, 05:56:23 PM
I've noticed that I'll read a post and after it's read the text turns from green to grey like it should to indicate that I read it.

Not anymore...
Threads that I have read are green again with the "new" in yellow next to it.

I'll read every single post in a thread and they should all be grey but all I have to do is simply refresh the page and they're all back to green again.

What's the deal?

Is anyone else having this problem?

Are you talking about individual replies in the threaded view, or the message titles on the topic listing?

I use flat view where it shows me all the replies as one long page, and it seems to be working the same as it always has. New threads that I've never seen before are listed in green with "new" next to them and threads I've seen, but which have new replies are in gray with "new" after them.

Not the text that people write in their posts....(the white text)

I'm referring to the text that shows all the threads when you first enter the phorum.

For example...I wrote the thread asking who all here smokes.
I read every single post.

When I came back it showed them all as being unread.

I also use the regular view and not the flat view.

Ok. That seems to be working ok for me. They were all green when I first came here to the new server, but it turns out that I wasn't logged in automatically. Once I logged in, the green/grey status of all the messages was restored. BTW, I'm using IE 5.01.

>I also use the regular view and not the flat view.

Maybe the threaded/flat views work differently. I find the threaded view too much work, having to load each individual reply.

s**t!

It even did it on this thread!

I read your last post JohnL and then when I refreshed the page it showed it as unread....even though I just read it minutes ago!

WTF is going on?

I'll bet it has something to do with Andrew moving the server.

Something got reset and wasn't changed back to the way it was before.

yeah i had the same problem with the posts i had seen a few days ago, but it seems to have righted itself now.

you're right, it's probably to do with the servers changing, and the histories have been reset.

I hope not.  I did run into a weird thing like what you had.  Just needed to update my bookmark.  The old one was for "badmovies.org/bbs/" and the new is "www.badmovies.org/bbs/" - it seems that either the browser or the cookie decided that meant it was a different board.

Let me know if you have any problems.

I'm not.

I think I might have found what was causing Ashthecat's problem.  After posting (or replying) to a message, you were sent to badmovies.org vice www.badmovies.org.  I fixed that in the config.

Hope that clears it up and sorry for the goof.

I'm having troubles too.  For some reason the ones I've read are gray and are still marked new.  So everytime I come to the board mos of the first page is marked new and it's quite confusing.  :<

It was working fine for me, but now most of the messages I've already read and back to green. Not all of them, but most. I'll have to see if it remembers them this time. (haven't been here in a couple days)

It does the same thing to me.
It's begining to drive me a little crazy

I hope this is just a result of the move and me recently changing that configuration on the board.  Let me know if it keeps up.  Also, please make sure (if you are using a favorite or shortcut on your browser) that it points to www.badmovies.org/bbs/

I tested it from a few machines and had a friend online do the same.  It appears to be working correctly. Hopefully everything is good now.   The change was probably caused by me tweaking the configuration on the 27th.

Ok, new problem; All the messages I read this morning are now grey, but they still have "New" after them.

It seemed to be working ok this morning, removing the new marker after I'd read them (and after it reloaded the page), but now they're all back.

I'm going to second JohnL with the "New" signs never going away.

I cannot replicate this problem.  Damn, damn, damn.  The "New" tag is controlled by a cookie stored on your computer.  Maybe deleting the old cookies for the phorum would fix the issue for you.  If you do not want to clear all your cookies, just look for the ones for www.badmovies.org.   It appears there are 4 of them.  It might be an issue of your computer not trusting the new server to modify that cookie.

If that does not work, can you let me know your config?  The version of Windows you are using and the browser (including version)?  I have tried it with Win98 SE and Win2000, running IE 5.5Sp2 and 6.0Sp2 and, my favorite browser, Mozilla 1.4.

My problem seemed to be cleared up days ago.

Now I see others are having an altogether different problem than what I was having.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhh It won't stop

I tried and deleted cookies but it still hasn't cleared up,  Any ideas?

It was working ok until a few days ago. While Ash was having problems, things seemed normal for me. Maybe it was caused by whatever changes you made to fix Ash's problem.

I'm using Windows 98 with IE5.01 SP2.

Once I finish reading all the messages, I'll try deleting the cookies and then mark everything as read.

Ok, I forgot to delete the cookies, however I did reload the page right after I finished reading all the messages and the NEW tag was gone on all the posts. Now it's back.... :(

I have tried multiple variations on a few computers to replicate this and no dice.  Again, the only way I can proceed is if you let me know your operating system (Win 98, Win 2000, Win XP, etc) and the browser (IE 5.5sp2, Mozilla 1.4, etc) you are using.

I have tried the board with:
Win 98 SE, Win 2000, Win 95
IE 5.5sp2, IE 6.0sp1, Mozilla 1.3 and Mozilla 1.4

The yellow "new" never goes away on my screen. Is there something that can be done about it?

Title: Re: Is something wrong with this board?

After about 2 hours of playing around, I was able to replicate this problem in the following way:

By going to "badmovies.org/bbs/list.php?f=2" instead of "www.badmovies.org/bbs/list.php?f=2" I seem to have gotten the same problem.  In fact, it caused me a couple of weird problems with what the computer thought I had or had not read.

If you are using a shortcut or favorite bookmark, please make sure it points to "www.badmovies.org/bbs/list.php?f=2" since this is the correct URL.  If one of my links is sending you to the wrong place, please let me know so I can fix it.

Also, if using IE, please delete your cookies a couple of times.  I had one or two times when IE was just seeming to hang onto the cookies.  I finally deleted them all, closed IE, opened IE, deleted them all, closed IE, opened IE and was good.

So, for my best suggestion:
Make sure any bookmark or favorite points to "www.badmovies.org/bbs/list.php?f=2" (minus the quotes of course)
Log out of the phorum (if logged in)
Make sure your browser is not blocking cookies from www.badmovies.org
Delete cookies
Close Browser
Open Browser
Delete Cookies
Close Browser
Open Browser and go to "www.badmovies.org/bbs/list.php?f=2"
Log in if you have a profile

Hopefully this fixes things

I remembered to delete the cookies last time and now it seems to be working ok.

For the record, my IE5.01 bookmark has always pointed to www.badmovies.org and then I click the link for the board. I do this so that I can see when new reviews have been posted.
