Title: Off Topic: Toilet Paper
Post by: Ash on September 24, 2003, 02:25:32 AM
Ok Ok...
I'm being goofy here but I got into a discussion with some friends earlier about which way people prefer the toilet paper to come off of the roll.

I like it to come off the top of the roll...not the bottom.

There's just something wrong about it coming off the bottom to me.

Maybe it's because I can't accurately judge how many "squares" I'm taking.  (well I can...It's just more difficult...I actually have to look closely to count how many)

If it's from the top, then I'm more able to get an "instant...at a glance estimate" of the number of "squares" being withdrawn.

If I'm at someone else's house and I notice that it is coming off the bottom,  I'll actually take the 5 seconds to switch it around so it comes off the top.

Maybe I'm a conservative anal retentive bastard but for me to have it come off the bottom of the roll is UNTHINKABLE!

I MUST CHANGE IT!!

I read somewhere once that over 75% of Americans prefer it to come off the top...(Reader's Digest I think)

I've used friends' bathrooms and after I'm done they'll go in to use it and then come out after they're done and say to me...."You switched the toilet paper again didn't you!?"

Which do you prefer?

The paper MUST come off the top of the roll. It is written in the Bible.

As long as there is toilet paper I'm happy.  And I'm talking about good old American toilet paper-- Scott, Charmin, whatever, not the gawdawful British (European) crap that doubles as airmail paper.

Definitely the top. That way, the end hangs out from the wall, where it's easier to grab. I think it's also a little easier to pull that way, and it doesn't touch the wall.

Much better, all around.

All right I'll be seriouse I go for the bottom, because gravity pulls down on the end piece and you can find it easier. If it's on top it sort of blends in and it takes me like 30 seconds to find it by spinning it. Bottom for me.

Wrong you are wrong.The paper must come off the bottom never the top.What is wrong with you?Were you raised by wolfs?It is toilet paper off the top people like you that are bringing this country down.When you take it off the top it has more of a chance of ripping, when taken off the bottom the toilet paper rarley rips.
Don't you see the flaws in your ideology, it is absulutly f**king absured that you would do this.

For the record - Over the top

My main concern is when one is at the super market and you are purchasing TP (a.k.a. toilet paper) don't you ever wonder if it is enough the the amount of food you buy?

Hmmm, On the rare occasions I am in a house lucky enough to afford toilet paper (dont forget I live at college) I prefer it from the BOTTOM

Yes Wycked Nick, I am an apostale of yours ;-)

Here, the in-the-wall holder is in such an awkward place (on the right, back almost to the corner) that you can't reach it with turning sideways or dislocating your shoulder, so we just leave the roll sitting on the radiator. In bathrooms where the holder is in a more acceptable place, I prefer it from the top also. Same with paper towels. Having it come off the bottom just seems backward.

 The Burgomaster:
"The paper MUST come off the top of the roll. It is written in the Bible."

"And thou shalt never let the roll feed from the bottom."  1 Lavatories 2:13

Susan:
"And when i'm at someones house who has it from the bottom - I switch it."

I do the same thing.

I once seen somewhere an arrangement for toilet paper that came out the middle. A roll on top that dispensed from the bottom and the roll on the bottom that dispensed from the top causing a two ply middle dispension. I always thought it stupid , but after reading these post I can now look back at the genius of the thing.

What I meant in my earlier post is that how do we know we have purchased enough PT for the amount of food we have purchased?

I want to thank ASHTHECAT for occuping my day and memories of things once forgotten. I'm voting this post as post of the year in January.

If toilet paper can meet in the middle, why can Democrats and Republicans?

My wife just reminded me that I don't technically hang the roll over the top. I prefer it that way, but I usually don't bother to hang a new roll. It sits on the counter. Come to think of it, that's better than over or under.

The first draft of the screenplay for Stallone's movie "Over the Top" was actually about toilet paper . . . but they ended up changing it to arm-wrestling.

Other movies about toilet paper and bowel movements include:

* PAPER MOON

* RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP

* GOLDFINGER

* THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS

* CHITTY-CHITTY BANG-BANG

* M*A*S*H

* THE BLOB

Well then - what did they use before toilet paper , newspaper and the sears robuck catalogue?
I've read of the following:
leaves
sand
wool
stones
Corn cobs (colonial america..ahh those were the days)
mussel shell

tidbit:
The use of water to clean oneself is common in southern India, where people use their left hand to clean themselves, and their right hand for eating. In parts of Africa, the converse is true, and a right-handed handshake could be considered rude

The average tear is 5.90 sheets of TP.
44% wipe from front to back from behind their backs.
60% look at the paper after they wipe.
42% fold, 33% crumple, 8% do both fold and crumple, 6% wrap it around their hands.
50% say that they have wiped with leaves.
8% have wiped with their hands.
2% have wiped with money!

Oh - and here ya go. This is what happens when you don't let a thread die:
bathroom survey (http://www.bathroomsurvey.com/)
And on that note..i'm outta here!

I'm sorry, Susan, but having those statistics handy is creepy.  (Get it?  Handy?  Huh?  Huh?  Oh, nevermind.)

Anyway, I'm pretty sure Dr. Seuss wrote a book about this.

Personally, I prefer over the top, but only because it reminds me of the movie, which reminds me of the Sammy Hagar, and anytime I can sing Sammy Hagar at the top of my lungs while taking a crap is a high note in my book (set to be published 2004).

But then again those child welfare agents in the Simpsons were pretty adamant that the proper hanging fashion was underhand.

At any rate, I'd like to share this poem I wrote:

"What could be worse than finding a spider on your toilet paper?"
I asked, staring into the eyes of my deepest love.
With unwavering gaze, she kept an enticing silence,
And slowly, languidly she replied in black velvet voice,
"Finding that spider six seconds too late, my love."
In that moment, I died.

Thank you, I'll be here all week.  (No, I'm going on vacation on Sunday.)

Hey thanks Scott for reviving this dead thread...now it's UNDEAD!!

I myself am superconservative.  I try to see how much can be collected using the fewest squares possible.

44% wipe from front to back from behind their backs./ I fit into this category.
And WHY would you want to wipe from back to front?
It would be like a clock going backwards!
It wouldn't look or feel right!

60% look at the paper after they wipe./ Ok I disagree with this one...You MUST look at the paper...how else are you to know when you're done wiping if you don't look at it!
More like 90% I would imagine look at it.
What was left out was how many people hold it up to their noses and snff it!
YUCK!

42% fold, 33% crumple, 8% do both fold and crumple, 6% wrap it
around their hands./ I'm a crumpler

50% say that they have wiped with leaves./ Yes I do admit that I have indeed wiped with leaves...several oak leaves when I was about 11 to be specific!

8% have wiped with their hands./  Now that's just disgusting!

2% have wiped with money!/ I wish I was that rich!

Maybe now you all know me a little bit better. (Maybe more than you probably wanted to!)
Hehe!

Apologies for dragging this particular thread up, considering that the general theme of this is being discussed elsewhere more recently, but I have to add my few cents worth to this specific issue.

Toilet paper should hang over the top.  Not sure if you get printed toilet paper in the US, if so, have a look at it.  If you hang it so it rolls off the bottom, the pattern is upside down. Therefore it is the manufacturers intention that toilet paper hang over the top.  Those who prefer it from the bottom are the same sort of people who open the milk carton at the wrong end - you know, the one that says "Open Other End".

Yes, I turn around toilet paper hung incorrectly.

A similar hatred of mine is public toilet doors.  ALL public toilet doors should either open outwards, or be able to be operated automatically.  Count the number of people who don't wash their hands next time you are in a public toilet.  They all leave via the door.  If the door opens inwards, they use the door handle to open it so they can exit. Without washing their hands.  So the inward-opening toilet door handle is the first point of contact for those who do not wash their hands. Oooooo! I am getting the shakes just thinking about this.   If you are lucky you can use the door-closing mechanism above the door to lever it open, so that you can leave without sharing their disgusting habit, but as I cannot see on top of this, I get concerned about just how clean these are, too. I have been known stand in the "airlock" bit between the two doors in my local shopping centre, and hold both doors open with my feet after other people enter or leave, while waiting for my son to wash his hands, so that we can escape without having to touch any of the door handles.

Bazarov would normally be right, but he has yet to recognize the parallels between the "reel" and the "roll".

Rombles you are so right about restroom doors. Honestly it should be debated on a national level. Maybe even be part of a Republican or Democrat presidential platform in 2008. It really is that important. Unfortunately the world is soaked up in the endless consumption of lesser tissues that seem to roll off the press from the bottom instead of the top.

The worst of all TP products is the toliet paper that is so thin that it melts in your hand. Supposedly it was designed for basement bathrooms or toliets that have other problems. Who ever invented this non-product probably worked for Spencer Gifts. You may as well use your hand or not wipe at all.

I constantly will see someone come out of a stall from taking a s**t and they don't even bother to go to the sink.
They head straight to the door and leave.

That is just sick...not normal.
It makes me wonder what kind of upbringing they had.
I often wonder if some do it because they want us to get their germs.
Kind of like a thrill seeking thing.  They quietly snicker to themselves.

One time after a movie let out, a ton of people went to the bathroom.
A guy who was in there before us dropped some stinkin' loads and then went right out the door.
I made a comment out loud so everybody could hear it and several guys agreed with me.
Everyone went to the sinks and washed their hands.
Then I took a paper towel and used it to open the door.
