Title: A Few Recent Viewings
Post by: Scott on September 27, 2003, 11:00:40 PM
Seen a few films during the week that I didn't mention:

WYATT EARP  - I didn't  hear good things about this, but I liked it. It's not the greatest Western, but its ok if you like the story of the Earp's and Tombstone. This is the one that stars Kevin Costner. It's very long and not as good as TOMBSTONE that came out about the same time. I finally finished this one.

AN AMERICAN ROMANCE - This is a 50 something year old film about an immigrant that makes it big. Great story and film that was colorized by Turner and was shown on TCM.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF - Seen alittle bit of this one starring James Garner as someone who drifts into town and takes the sheriffs job.  It's abit of a comedy and Garner is good in this one, but it's distracting to see the guy who played Col. Potter as the Mayor in this film.

CASTLE KEEP - Has a neat beginning and look. It stars Burt Lancaster and Peter Faulk. Hope to see the rest of this some day.

KIM - This is a great 1950 film about a boy who is an orphan in India and becomes a young spy. The film also stars Erol Fynn. Another neat film that turns out ok in one of Turners colorized films.

Usually I don't like the Idea of colorizing a b/w film, but in the case of KIM and AN AMERICAN ROMANCE it works.

Always preferred "wyatt Earp" over "Tombstone", but you are not alone in that one. Even serious critics seem to prefer "Tombstone". My only complain about "Earp" was that Dennis Quaid almost dissapeared during post-production. Maybe Costner didn't want him to steal the show.

Kim is a good one, one of Errol Flynn's better late performances. Dean Stockwell is pretty friggin good as the title character, hard to believe he'd grow up to make such classics as the Dunwich Horror. I'm pretty sure the color is original, vice being a colorization. For more films Flynn made later in his career , check out The Master of Ballantrae or Against All Flags.

I had the director's cut of WYATT EARP on video a few years ago, but I sold it on Ebay.

I thought it was a good movie . . . I watched it about 3 times.

But then again, I have THE POSTMAN on DVD, and I don't think it's nearly as bad as everyone says. In fact, I enjoy it, even though it is mostly a run-of-the-mill, "what the hell happened to civilization?" story.

I thought POSTMAN was ok also. Not the greatest, but worth viewing.

My God! I also thought "the Postman" was OK, though it does not justice to the novel by David Brin. I've noticed I like long movies (3 hours or more), even if they tend to ramble. Hell, I even liked "Heaven's gate", which could make an interesting addition to youre western list, Scott. Just be sure to watch the full version.
