Title: Rio Lobo (1970)
Post by: Scott on September 29, 2003, 10:16:10 PM
Well, I just watched RIO LOBO (1970) starring John Wayne. After watching it I realized that I have seen the ending a couple times and come to think of it you may as well fast-forward to the last 20 minutes of this film. The film isn't that good and actually looks cheap in parts and Howard Hawks hasn't captured the John Wayne that people are use to. The best part of the film is played by Jack Elam as Mr. Phillips who carries a shotgun. I like the use of the Mexican actor/actresses. Out of the three films with the being locked in the jail scene EL DORADO is my favorite.

1) EL DORADO
2) RIO LOBO
3) RIO BRAVO

I agree that RIO LOBO isn't very good. It pales in comparison to RIO BRAVO and EL DORADO.

I think that John Wayne's westerns went somewhat down hill after TRUE GRIT (except for THE COWBOYS and THE SHOOTIST, which I really enjoy).

I think that BIG JAKE, CAHILL: U.S. MARSHALL, and CHISUM all share the same cheap look as RIO BRAVO. I haven't seen ROOSTER COGBURN AND THE LADY, but I have heard that it is just an average movie.

Burgomaster I'm still trying to finish up my John Wayne marathon from the summer. I've really enjoyed watching John Wayne films. He really was a great film actor.

Many are average Westerns. The ones that I liked are:

McLintock
Red River
Comancheros
The Shootist
El Dorado
The Cowboys
True Grit
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon

I still have to see:

Chisum
The Train Robbers
Rooster Cogburn
Angel and the Badman

Seen parts, but not all of:

The Undefeated
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Stagecoach

Want to see again:

Fort Apache (haven't seen this one since the 70's)
