Title: Movies that use the Whip ! ! ! !
Post by: Scott on October 21, 2003, 09:37:24 PM
Flangepart in an earlier post title "choose your weapons". I wanted to focus on one weapon or device called the Whip. It's been used in many of my favorite films. It really brings a film alive. Here at Badmovies.org I want a complete list of all movies that involve the Whip. I'm not talking about whip cream or the amusement park ride, but rather the flesh tearing device made out of leather. Some that come to mind are.

BLOODY PIT OF HORROR
ONE EYED JACKS
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY
THE APE MAN
DJANGO
BLOOD SUCKING FREAKS

I know that there must be a 100 out there. I just can't remember them.

Lash (Musetta Vander) was pretty sexy with her whip in Oblivion & Backlash: Oblivion 2.

"The Dark Power" jumps to mind.  Also, I think that a whip or some sort of "implement of persuasion" was used on the half-human creatures in both "Atlantis: The Lost Continent" and also "The Island of Dr. Moreau."  The whip or lash comes up pretty commonly in sword and sandal epics, so there is a whole slew there.  Add to those a number of westerns and zorro films.

The dwarf in "Hawk the Slayer" has a whip.  He even fishes with it.
Don't Flash and Barin have a whip battle in "Flash Gordon" (1980)?

Just about anything David Friedman produced has at least one whipping or spanking scene in it.....I believe JOHNNY FIRECLOUD has a pretty good one.

Title: Starship Troopers
Post by: Ash on October 22, 2003, 02:20:57 AM
When "what's his name" was in charge of the training exercise using live rounds in their rifles and held responsible for the accidental death of that guy in "Starship Troopers" he was given 10 lashings in front of everyone.  (was it 10?  I forget)

Even in films that take place in the future, the whip is used.

Isn't there a knock-down, drag-out whip fight in "The Kentuckian" where Burt Lancaster gets rather the worst of it?  And I believe the follow up to "Westworld" has Yul doing thing with a whip.

Good. Someone hasn't mentioned him yet. One word. "Lash" LaRue. I mean two words. Let me check my sources, Scott, and see what else I can find.

masters of the universe has heman [good old Dolph] getting whipped by some guy called blade [i think]

the funny thing is that it's kind of a light saber whip, if you get what i mean.  very funny, though i'm sure very painful to be on the end of.

In "Johnny Mnemonic", one of the bad guys uses some sort of 'laser whip'

the first Movie that came to my mind was "House of Whipcord" (fitting title huh). it's a, slow-paced, 70's, low-budget, British horror film, about a woman who's seduced by some satanic like hippy who has about as much charisma and charles manson. he then tricks her into being thrown in this wierd modern penal system run by a bunch of old women who are the moral equivalent of quakers. the old women proceed to whip her and a bunch of other girls. i don't think the film or Pete Walker, the director, ever went anywhere.

In Zorro the Gay Blade, Bunny uses a whip instead of a sword.

Catwoman in "Batman Returns".
I am also thinking it was used in the movie "From Dusk til Dawn".

Chopper2:

I have HOUSE OF WHIPCORD on DVD. I also have another PETE WALKER movie called FRIGHTMARE (not to be confuse with a more recent movie of the same name), which is much better than HOUSE OF WHIPCORD.

Pete Walker actually made several horror/thrillers in England during the 1970s. One that is supposedly very good is THE CONFESSIONAL (I have never seen it).

I believe that Walker was a moderately successful director in his genre during the 70s. I'm not sure whatever became of him.

Darn! I had forgotten about wsimd.

Anyway, Scott, here are some more movies that utilize the whip.

10 Commandments
Ben Hur
Zorro, the Gay Blade

And one film definitely not about whips.
Bullwhip Griffin w/ Roiddy McDowell in the title role.

As for Burgomaster's inquiry about British director Pete Walker, his last film was apparently a straight-to-video musical called "Chess" in 1992. Before that, his last theatrical film was "The House of Long Shadows" w/ Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine, which I beleive has been discussed previously on this board.

Thanks JohnL. I think that web site says it all. :) Well I think John ended this question.

Many great entries here about the whip. I've seen HOUSE OF WHIPCORD and FRIGHTMARE and like them both very much.

I noticed the STORY OF "O" and ORGY OF THE DEAD are on that site.

By the way CAPTAIN BLOOD was on last night. Great movie with a few whippings.

Well, it doesn't really cover whip fights and such. :)

Andrew mentioned sword and sandal flicks, the whip is also usually featured in seagoing epics like Mutiny on the Bounty, Little Bill used a whip a few times in Unforgiven, I seem to remember quite a few whip-thrashings in Roots and Mandingo.  In The Sea Hawk(1940) Flynn and company are whipped while serving as galley slaves.

Title: MOTEL HELL
Post by: kriegerg69 on October 26, 2003, 02:10:38 AM
Hysterical scene where the "kinky couple" are in their room in the motel, and while the guy is in the bathroom putting his unmentionables on, the girl is out in the bedroom area cracking her whip all over the place, destroying one object after another.

Title: HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN
Post by: kriegerg69 on October 26, 2003, 02:16:13 AM
The Universal horror classic.....the scene where the gypsy king starts laying in on Ilonka (Elena Verdugo) with his whip, beating the crap outta her, until the hunchbacked Daniel (J. Carrol Naish) leaps to her rescue and starts beating the crap outta HIM!

Oh, of course....later on, in a fit of rage, Daniel starts beating on the Frankenstein monster, but of course he's using a laboratory strap. Still, I refer to this one as the film in which "almost everyone gets beaten!"

In the 1926 Greta Garbo vehicle The Temptress, there's a brutal whip fight sequence between hero Manuel Robledo (Antonio Moreno) and bad guy Manos Duras (Roy D'Arcy).  Two bare-chested men whip the crap out of each other in front of a crowd of spectators while a band plays music!  It's a silent movie, but I always imagine them playing Tom Lehrer's "Masochism Tango."

Thai action film Tom Yum Goong, aka The Protector thanks to stupid US marketing decisions, incorporates a whip in the final fight scene.

The whip
aka

the birch rod
the blacksnake
the buggy
the bull
the cane
the cat-o-nine-tails
the dog
the horse
the knotted cord
the knout
the lash
the ox
the quirt
the riding
the riding crop
the rod
the ruler
the scourge
the strap
the strop
the switch
the sword cane
the taws
the thong

the whip
aka
one of the finest weapons ever wielded.
it'll put out your eye
take off your ear
the nose
a finger
and cut your cheek or your back to the bone.
It just needs more than a modicum of skill to wield it.

the whip

In The Wicked Lady, Faye Dunaway and Marina Sirtis have a NSFW whip fight.

RETURN OF THE KING (1980)
The animated version by Rankin-Bass.
Frodo (voiced by Orson Bean) and Samwise (Roddy McDowell) are asleep and awakened by an Orc demanding they get in line with other Orcs (being an Orc, he's stupid and doesn't realize they're hobbits).  The orcs sing a cool song "Where There's A Whip, There's A Way", as the leader cracks his whip.
Where there's a whip, there's a way! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdXQJS3Yv0Y#)
