Title: Movies you love that everybody else hates.
Post by: Mofo Rising on December 12, 2003, 10:24:24 PM
ASHTHECAT's post about FREDDY GOT FINGERED prompted this post.  I know everybody has movies they think are fantastic, but everybody else seems to think they are about the same level as pig vomit.

My nominee: THE STUPIDS.  I can't help but laugh like a maniac at this movie.  The family is just so gloriously stupid.  It's easy to be stupid, but it's very hard to be stupid in such interesting ways.

"It's the Lord!"
"Actually, it's pronounced Lloyd."

Later:  "In the name of the Lloyd!"

I'm sorry, it's funny.  And yet nobody else agrees with me.  Achh!  C'est la vie.

NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES.   I watch it at least a few times a year.  I think it's a fun movie, and think it gets a bad rap because of all the stock footage.  I don't think it's any worse than any of the other Italian Romero ripoffs.

FREDDY GOT FINGERED, for reasons mentioned elsewhere.

Man you guys don't even know what I have to put up through with my friends. They always like the worst hollywood trash like 13 Ghosts, Ghost Ship, and Resident Evil.Arg its so f**king frustrating, trying to disscuss movie with my friends.Remeber my post "Movies were people miss the point"? I was talking about my friends, honestly I have friends that have no clue what Planet of the Apes was about.
I do have one friend though that is well known for picking the worst of the worst movies. And when I say the worst I do mean the worst. He honestly will rent movies by how cool the covers look.If it has a half naked chick on the cover he rents it, if its about mutant animals or firemen, he rents it.The problem is not that he picks bad B-movies its that he dosn't appreciate the classics, and goes for all of the Hollywood crap.

"13 Ghosts" was one of the stupidest damned things I ever saw.  I don't totally mind if a movie's a piece of crap, but if you have Shannon Elizabeth in an ALL GLASS bathroom taking a shower, you had better god damned show her boobs.

Title: Re: Movies you love that everybody else hates.
Post by: Eirik on December 13, 2003, 07:03:07 AM
The original "In Laws" is one for me.  I think it's one of the funniest movies I ever saw, but whenever I rent it and show it to friends or family they all think its dull and unfunny.  One friend actually said he thought the remake (the one which tried to pass off Albert Brooks in a thong as funny) was way better!  BLASPHEMY!!

"Watership Down" is another.  I owned it for years and people always looked at it funny until I had kids, at which point they just assumed it was theirs.  Nobody ever wants to give it a chance, but it's a good movie even for grownups.  (BTW - I'm just now considering letting my 5-year old watch it, because it is kind of violent, somewhat complicated, and potentially scarey at parts).

Finally, there's "Red Dawn."  Most of my friends see it as a stupid teen action movie, my more liberal friends see it as horrible propaganda.  I think it's a pretty fun movie that captures a little of the Cold War zeitgeist, has some tongue in cheek references to old war movies (Longest Day especially), has Lea Thompson (always a plus), and - quite frankly - depicts the Soviets for what they were, albeit in a highly fictionalized setting.  One complaint I hear sometimes is "too patriotic."  What the hell is wrong with that once in a while??

Title: Re: Movies you love that everybody else hates.
Post by: Evil Matt on December 13, 2003, 07:05:16 AM
"Red Dawn" is worth the price of admission if only to see C. Thomas Howell go nuts and get blown away by that helicopter.

Nothing wrong with being too patriotic.  Better than being unpatriotic.  Would they rather see a movie about flag burning?

Title: Re: Movies you love that everybody else hates.
Post by: Eirik on December 13, 2003, 07:21:29 AM
"Would they rather see a movie about flag burning?"

Lots of people seem to equate being patriotic with being a blind follower or that being positive about your country means you're necessarily negative toward other countries.  I think it is based on the fallacy that feeling good about the US means one must therefore feel good about everything the US has ever done.  So yeah, unfortunately I do know some people who would rather watch a movie about flag burning because that would make them feel smarter or more independant-minded somehow.  In my opinion, the real intellectual can enjoy a patriotic movie as much as a movie that questions patriotism.

Joe Bob Briggs hosted RED DAWN once with Col. David Hackworth. A man with more legitimate Purple Hearts than you can shake a stick at. He is a true hero. And his books about soldiers are must reads, cause he's been there, done that, and has the scars to prove it.
He blasted Red Dawn. Nuff said.

Ah, Wycked dude, glad to see a couple of British films on your list!

As for me, I think "Leningrad Cowboys Go America" is pant-wettingly funny.  Mention it to other people and they give me That Look ...

OMG!  "Red Dawn"!!! John Milius' magnum opus!!!!  I didn't realise it had CT Howell or Leah Thompson in it.  All I remember is Powers Boothe and Harry Dean Stanton.  And the Argentinian troops who were armed with the FN rifle, a nice accurate touch ...

Don't forget the mutish Jennifer Grey. This was back in the 80's when everyone was afraid the russians were going to nuke us and reagan was going to push the button. After awhile you'll notice the theme in movies and tv changed to the mysterious Russian soldier who we later discover is really nice - and - can't we all just get along? See how many russian themed movies of 80's you can list ;-)

I love the original "In Laws"!:
"Flames!  Flames on my car!! . . . . Serpentine!!  Serpentine!!".  Brilliant.  Peter Falk is one of our most under-used actors, reduced to doing crap for a paycheck.  They get him in Europe (See Wim Wenders), but over here we never seem to know what to do with him --
Yeah, I like "Watership Down" too --
The best/worst example of a film I like, but get the super-deluxe version of "That Look" from damn near everyone else I've had watch it with me is "The Forbidden Zone".  I find it to be a very funny example of what you can do with zero budget and a determination to just finish making a real movie -- plus I love it's innovative uses of music & cartoon violence (Substitue a real meat loaf for a gorilla's face before striking -- the results are soooo groooossss!!).  Nobody else gets it.  I have people I showed it to 15 years ago still bring it up:  "Hey, remember that godawful thing Pete made us watch that time? (dissolve in snorting laughter)".
I live with my shame . . .

no matter how many times i watch it makes me crack up. it is as bad as it looks, if not worse. and is an insult towards the original. i spend the entire time just staring in disbelief at the screen that anyone could make this. anyone that thinks renee zellwinger did not derserve that oscar needs only to watch this.

I saw that movie a couple of times, it so insane to think funny clowns could be killers and to have a space ship that looks like a circus tent but once I started to watch it I really did like it.  It keeps ones attention, but why did they put the people in cotton candy, why didn't they squeeze them into one of those little cars?  or stick them into a big balloon?  Clowns don't nomally make cotton candy, do they?

I love the movie HUDSON HAWK. None of my friends like it, or can sit through 10 minutes of it. Cracks me up every time.

Another overlooked classic (burn me on this, I care not) was CLUE. No one else could recant the events of an evening like a jonesing crack addict better than Tim Curry.

If I had to list some of my alltime favorite villians he would actually be pretty up there if not on top. When it comes to villians I choose those who aren't necessarily "badass" but just a great villanous personality. (ie: Yul brenner in 10 commandments as well)...but i digress.....

I remember the reviews when this movie came out.  The Hollywood types were apoplectic about a movie showing dangers of gun control and depicting the Soviet Union as being aggressive & evil.  My dad & I enjoyed the movie as a good old fun action movie.  Certainly much more entertaining than, oh, say Speed 2, Die Hard part 300, etc.

That scene always bugged me. Why did he fire the rocket at the body of the helicopter? He should have aimed for the cockpit or the tail rotor. Either would have stood a good chance of bringing it down.

Ufff... Many to mention here. From silly comedies (I've somehow developed some taste for the absurd) like "Hudson Hawk" to imposssible adaptations of writers I like ("Screamers" 1995, adapting a short piece from Philip K. Dick) to silly action. Talking about silly action, I hate older Steven Seagal / JC Van Damme stuff, but I just love their later films, like "Under Siege II", "The foreigner" or "Half past dead" in the case of Seagal, or "Knock Off" or "Replicant" in the case of Van Damme. Maybe it has to do with me liking absurd things.

Post by: Neville on December 16, 2003, 08:07:27 AM
¡That's phantastic, Derf! I thought I was the only one who had enjoyed "tank Girl". Well, Andrew said he liked it as well, and that he even used as a way to introduce bad movies into his circle. I have to say that the whole damn movie left me speechless and in a state of shock. Malcolm McDowell with his mech arm and Lori Petty feeding his tank's gun with a sixpack was too much for me, but in the following days I surprised myself remembering it and laughing.

Title: Re: Movies you love that everybody else hates.

Yeah, we showed "Tank Girl" to some friends. They laughed all the way through it, and then the next day claimed it was horrible and that they hated it. Go figure. Any movie that breaks into Cole Porter tunes with punk dancers can't be all bad.

"Strange days", by Katryn Bigelow, a sci-fi movie written by James Cameron and starring Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett. It is overlong and the plot tries to unfold in many directions at the same time. Despite this, I find it fascinating.

I love Woody Allen's film, and everyone hates him, does that count? It's nice to know we live in a society that alienates you if you don't make such funny movies with jokes about terds, big breasts, pop stars, or tom green sucking off a horse (please note the sarcasm).

ps-there does not exist a woman on this planet that likes Woody Allen!

I also am a Woody Allen fan.  His movies are MUCH funnier than most of the crap that generates big money at the box office.  BROADWAY DANNY ROSE is one of the funniest movies that I have ever seen, and there isn't a single fart in the entire movie.

Just caught (by accident!) Zelig last night on one of the HBOs.  Hadn't seen it in at least 10 years.

What a strange, funny, technically outrageous movie!

Woody's damn inconsistent these days but at his best there's still no one who can touch him.

Chopper:

Well, if you're ever in the Boston area, let me know.

Bernie:

I haven't seen Zelig in years!  The first time I saw it, I didn't really like it.  But after I watched it a few times, it really started to grow on me.

About once a year I try to wach some of Woody's more outrageous movies from the 60s and 70s like SLEEPER, BANANAS, LOVE & DEATH . . .

I think another one of his funniest movies is WHAT'S UP, TIGER LILLY?

Title: Re: Movies you love that everybody else hates.
Post by: Bernie on December 19, 2003, 05:33:35 PM
First saw TIGER LILY in the Second Age of Middle Earth (high school, that is) with a bunch of friends -- we actually left a party to go to one guy's basement and watch it on TV (we'd all heard about it but never seen it).  I was afraid I was going to pee I was laughing so hard.

My wife and I consider ANNIE HALL "our" movie (just like some couples have "their song").  When you watch that classic scene contrasting holiday dinner at the two families' homes -- that's us! right there.

Title: Re: Movies you love that everybody else hates.
Post by: Chopper on December 19, 2003, 07:36:47 PM
Oh i still haven't seen Zelig yet! the only video store i knew that carried it back home got rid of it, but i'm sure i can find it somewhere.
>"Woody's damn inconsistent these days but at his best there's still no one who can touch him."
true, even though he's still a great filmmaker, i feel his later work like Deconstructing Harry just doesn't have as much zeal as his earlier stuff.

Title: Re: Movies you love that everybody else hates.
Post by: Eirik on December 19, 2003, 09:08:31 PM
I actually cannot stand Woody Allen - especially when he stars in his own stuff.  (I guess that comments belongs in the "Movies you hate but everyone else loves" thread)...  But I actually did like Zelig very much - in fact it's the only Woody Allen movie I liked.  I thought he sent a very good message in a very humorous way.

My wife and I love Woody Allen movies and still own a complete collection of all his movies on VHS.

Also, I grew up watching THE SLEEPER and TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN every year on WPIX from New York in the 70's. I also read his autobiography.

Most people don't like Woody Allen, because of his New York sophisicate humor that is a completely different level. Possibly because of Allen's wimpy appearence like Paul Ruben as Pee Wee Herman on TV and PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE. That's another shame. Paul Ruben is/was also a genius. Pauly Shore is not in the same league, but his ENCINO MAN and SON IN LAW are great ones.

Scott and Susan: Bananas is awesome! A little less on the brainy-side than his later work, but still real fun.

"Hey don't worry about me I'm like a cat, I always land on my feet." (said as woody then turns around to the camera and starts wailing-lol, good stuff)

The film does have a special place in my heart. : ) Even though clowns don't really make cotton candy, I felt that it was a nice touch.

The fact that there was a lack of more female clowns bothered me more. Also, I believe that there should have been a better explanation of where they came from and why they felt humans would make a great snack.

Intolerance

Huge movie, and small-minded people trip over their own feet in condemning it in response to TBOAN. I rate it among the greatest classics of the art form.

There's also a cool part of LA Noir when you can visit the decaying set of the Babylon sequence, if anyone's played that.

Now THAT is a great example of rude.  Nobody liked Andrew Dice Clay, he was...  I don't know who Rick & Morty are, but I expect I'd remind you of them.  Simple minded as I am.   :teddyr:

Not a Woody fan. But he has his fans. I just don't get it. I reckon I'm 'simple minded'.

No.  It's the "simple-minded" that are Woody Allen fans.  Ergo, you are a genius.  (https://media.giphy.com/media/6KmGvCFZErtKw/giphy.gif)

I don't know... Woody is just a creeper.
And yeah- I have no clue who Rick and Morty are either.
I think it's a cartoon?
I just looked it up. It is a cartoon.

Alien Resurrection, Sublime and Freddy Got Fingered just to name a few. Honestly, I don't even consider Sublime to be a bad film but It's mighty underrated.

I don't even consider TROLL 2 that bad, as a matter of fact, I actually enjoyed it, it's delightfully cheesy. Tt just got reputation and everybody repeats like parrots, sadly.

Most people seem to have the Shucmaucher Batman movies.

I think they're a lot of fun.  They're like big budget versions of the Adam West show.

On a similar note, Street Fighter the movie.  At best you'll hear it called a so-bad it's good movie.  I legitimately think it's a fun entertaining movie, not because it's bad.

Radioactive Dreams, and even more amusing that the main song in it is "Guilty Pleasures"

I also have a big soft spot for Space Operas, which opens me up to all sorts of conflict.

Hey Andrew, why did you gave THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS three slimes? I watched it yesterday and felt like having Tor's ass pressed against my face for an entire hour.

Most of everybody I know personally and online hate this movie. I think it's a masterpiece, and Zombie's best movie to date.

I liked Christmas Story a  lot better before stations decided they'd make 24 hour marathons of it ever holiday season.

Who hates A CHRISTMAS STORY?

I bought the blu ray so that I wouldn't have to sit through the stupid commercials. Yes, I'm dead serious. This movie is a classic!
