Title: Favorite opening credits music
Post by: daveblackeye15 on December 17, 2003, 02:48:33 PM
While waiting for the bus yesterday I thought this up, I couldn't post it at home because I had work to do. My favorite opening credits music for first place is "Escape from New York" the music is weird but I like it, I think all the music in that movie really helps the mood. The opening credits music is my favorite music out of all of "EfNY" Second place: 'Conan the Barbarian" what kick ass music. When I think about this music I think of Arnold Swarnzenger and swords. 3rd place: "La Femme Nikita" the heavy metal music really sets the setting and mood of the movie.

I am drawing a blank on some good ones I know, but I did think of  "Apocalypse Now" with "The End" by the Doors.  That music really fit the on-screen scenes.

I tend to at least partly judge a movie by the opening music (if there is any); the music is like a prelude to the effort put into the whole project.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) - Great score by Denny Zeitlin...one of my all-time fave opening credits themes
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE - One of Bill Conti's best action themes..the main title just sweeps you into the film and the action of the opening scene
SUPERMAN (1978) - Also one of John Williams' best of that genre he's so often worked in
THE FINAL CONFLICT (1981) - My favorite of Jerry Goldsmith's OMEN scores
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) - One of Franz Waxman's best
FORBIDDEN PLANET - the first electronic score ever
KING KONG (1933) - 'Nuff said
HALLOWEEN (1978) - Great the first time it was used in the first film, and then overused in all the sequels
STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979) - The first and best of the Trek movie themes

I'm not sure it's the opening music, but I like the music that plays at various points in Phantasm.

The Theme to It's Garry Shandling's show.  "This is the theme to Garry's show . . ."
funny, no?

Hmmmm....tough to narrow it down since I'm such a huge fan of movie music, but here goes:

1. Krystof Komeda's theme for "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (seems like I've
     been throwing that one around a lot lately, but it's one of my favorite movies.)
2. The opening theme to Hammer's "Twins of Evil."
3. "Edward Scissorhands" by Danny Elfman
4. The pounding version of the Godzilla theme by Akira Ifukube used at the start
     of "Godzilla vs. the Thing."
5. Too many Kung Fu films and Spaghetti Westerns to mention.
6. Two really eerie pieces of opening music, used in "The Creeping Flesh"
     and "The Blood on Satan's Claw."

Although I thought it was typical 50's goofy music, the theme from The Blob has always stuck in my head.  I even heard it over the speaker system in one of those shlocky chain restaurants (Friday's I think) and it brought a smile to my face.

Beware of the blo......ob.

Never actually seen the movie, but I love the theme song from "The Green Slime."

"Is it just something in your head?
WILL YOU BELIEVE IT WHEN YOU'RE DEAD?!
GREEEEEEEEN SLIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!"

'"FLASH!    AAHHHHHH!!"
"HE'LL SAVE EVERY ONE OF US!!"

"KING OF THE IMPOSSIBLE!!"

Fight Club-The Dust Brothers opening score was fantastic, as was David Fincher's unique tour of Jack's brain and saliva.

>>'m surprised that no one has mentioned...

I shoulda remembered that one. seems like the song eventually started off after ming said "i  like to toy with things before total annhiliation"..then the pulse beat came in but I don't remember if they actually were singing the song yet or if it was just the music thumping through as the storms were raging and all those special effects were happening. Opening scene to a movie is hard, theme song on the other hand is a thread. This was a good selection - it doesn't get better than queen.

A memorable ending song to a movie - american werewolf in london

Love all movie soundtracks, can't get enough of them.  So this is of course a difficult choice!!

But some of my favourites are the song by Massive Attack from The Jackal [Bruce Willis version] Also I'll second Fight Club.

Snatch isn't too bad either... god I could go on for hours, so I'll leave it at that.

Oh, and fav TV starting song is probably the Angel theme or some funky\funny song from way back when like Hawaii 5O or Knight Rider etc.

To Sir, With Love(shut up...I like the song! don't judge me!)

The Magnificent Seven

Have Gun, Will Travel

Blazing Saddles

Goldfinger(WAAHHH WAH WAAAHHHHH)

Billy Jack

Almost forgot, Onionhead was spot on with the Theme to Garry Shandlings show, the opening theme to Garry's show, the song that they play as we watch the credits! I especially like the part in which he starts to whistle...whistle the theme to Garry Shandling's show!

Yeah me too, Sidney Poitier could play a horse humping car salesman and still give the character dignity. Love that guy! Thanks for the backup on the song, man. It's kinda like going into a biker joint and playing "Mandy" on the jukebox, gonna have to fight your way out, ya know.

Here's another "laundry list." While I don't mind duplicating what someone else has said on this "laundry list," I do have a problem of trying to remember whether the music I liked played over the opening credits, the closing credits, or something in between. But, having said that . . . Here are my favorites.

The Alamo
The Bridge Over the River Kwai
Flash Gordon
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
The Magnificent Seven
Medicine Man
The Pink Panther

It is perhaps surprising, that while I liked the music, for these films, I either have yet to see it, or I disliked it.

As for "To Sir, With Love," one of my favorite films, and one of my favorite performances by Sidney Poitier. Based on the book by E. R. Braithwaite,, while called a novel at www.imdb.com, I remember it more as being his autobiography, even if it is fictionalized to some extent. What was played down in the film, was the racism the writer faced while looking for a job in the U.K. after the war.  As a further note,, not only was the screenplay by James Clavell, the writer, Clavell was also the director.

No problem.  I'm comforatble enough with my masculinity to admit to liking certain movies that might be perceived as (no offense intended, ladies) "chick flicks" or "women's movies."  Some other examples are:

* TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

* WEST SIDE STORY

* ROMEO AND JULIET (the one with Olivia Hussey . . . NOT the piece of crap that came out a few years ago)

* SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS

* PILLOW TALK

(Don't worry, guys.  I also enjoy movies where a lot of stuff explodes).

And one more to my "laundry list" of favorite opening credits music.

Beetlejuice, Jurassic Park  and Ghostbusters. (OK, the last two don't actually have opening credits, but hey.)
