Title: Do you believe in ghosts?
Post by: wickednick on December 22, 2003, 05:16:44 AM
I would like to start off by saying that I am really a very skeptical person, and am not inclined to belive in something with out some king of proof. But over my 22 years of life I have seen things which defy explanation.
Ive seen objects move by them selves, I have two cases of actually seeming a apparition, objects have appeared out of nowhere and then dissapeard, and have even been phsically attacked on a few occasions. In my mind I have no doubt that ghosts exist. All the things that I have seen and that others have seen, can not simply be explained by any natural phenomena that we know of.
How many of you have have had a paranormal experince of this kind.I'd like to share some storys.

I've never seen any thing myself and I don't know if I really believe in ghosts. But, there is some pretty weird crap out there and I just won't mess with it. I've still never done the "Bloody MAry" thing in the mirror. Maybe I'm a big Nancy.

You sure you didn't drop acid before you saw those things Nick?

I don't believe in ghosts, I do believe in demons  (it's a theological thing)

It was once believed that ghosts were demons.  Which is why, in some of the old stories, you could rid yourself of a ghost with pure iron - the demon's bane.

I believe in the possiblity of all things supernatural at night, and disbelieve in the day.  I'd prefer it to be the other way around (easier on the heart, don't cha know), but what can you do?

Not to cast doubt on your experiences, but because something seems to defy explanation (especially with the emotion of having experienced something wierd) does not mean an explanation does not exist.

I am doubting what you saw, only the conclusion that it HAD to be ghosts simply because you don't have another answer for it.

The same kind of comment can be applied to UFO sitings.  The conclusion that something is an alien craft from another world is highly suspect and is generally reached simply because it is an easy conclusion for something apparently unexplained.

I have seen a few things I have been unable to explain.

Things have moved, made sounds/noises, and I have felt physical contacts when there was no-one there.

Ghosts?  I don't know - I try to keep an open mind.    It is all a puzzle to me - and speculating is most of the fun.

Maybe I should tell a few of my experinces, just to give some examples of what I have experinced. You can try and disprove them if you wish, but I have yet to find any other explanation.
Well I'll go back to my first experince. This happened about when I was 8 years old.I woke up late in the night and noticed what seemed to be a shadow of a man standing over my night light.I remeber looking around the room for something to explain it but I saw nothing. The curtains were pulled over the windows and there was nothing in front of the windows to cause such a shadow. After realising that there was a ghost in my room whatching me I hid under my covers. After a few minutes I looked back out and it was gone, I then ran screaming out of my room and into my parents room.I know that I was awake through this whole experince, because I even remeber the dream I had before I woke up.
Next is the a rather strange experinces which would happen with my dog and a gate.At my old house when my family would leave the house for a while, we would put my dog into the hallway which leads outside and also leads down into the basement. To keep the dog from going into the basement we put up a gate in the entrance. Now the gate has a bolt latch, to lock it and it would be nearly impossible for my dog to open it, not to mention close it again after.
So once in awhile when we would come home, we would find the gate open and the dog running around in the basement, but even weirded is the fact some times the dog would be in the basement and the gate still closed.Know I've been trying to figure out how my dog could so this, but have not ben able to think of any good explanations. My dog is a English Springer Spaniel.I know Springers are decent jumpers but the gate was 3 feet high and after the years of living with my dog I have never seen her jump over 3 ft.Next my dog is to say the least a moron, and I find it impossible that my dog could open the latch on the gate, and close it after her.
Lastly is when things would appear and dissapear.I remeber one time we were gone for a few days and when we came back all the fish in my fish tank had dissapeard. The cover was on the tank and it would be impossible for them to jump out of the tank.Next we would find little cowboy and indian plastic figurines all over my room. They would appear out of nowhere, on top of my dresser and shelves, and laying in the middle of the floor.I never remeber getting those toys as a kid, and I never remeber placing them in any of the spots that I would find them. After I found one I would put it in the toy box.Now the anouther strange thing is that after we moved out of the house, all of the little figurines dissapeard from the toy box.
I have dozens of other experinces, but I would need to write a book to explain them all.I've tried for years to explain all of these, but can never come up with anything better than, it was a ghost.

Lately it's been parralled that the demons, spirits, (even ghost) are the same thing as the alien visitations and abductions of today. I can see them as seperate entities though. All things exist.

I do have one vague recollection, from childhood, of waking up in the middle of the night, and seeing a figure standing in my doorway. It was too dark to make out any more than the shape of a man. I said something, but got no response, which suggests it probably wasn't my father or brother. I'm pretty sure I must have dreamed it, especially because I doubt that I would have gone straight back to sleep if I were really awake and seeing a dark figure facing into my room.

There have also been times, in recent years, when I've been working late, and felt as if I wasn't alone, and even caught a flicker of motion out of the corner of my eye. I've pretty much chalked that up to sleep depravation, but it was freaky at the time, especially in our old office, which was in an old house. I did have one coworker at the time who was into mystical things, and she claimed that there was something in that building. Who knows?

Ghosts are among the things I tend to doubt, but sincerely want to believe in. Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and UFOs are also in that category. I'd be really disappointed if anyone disproved their existence beyond a doubt. A world with monsters is far more interesting.

Ok, first off, I'm a big skeptic as well...

When I was about 11 years old, my entire family was awakened by the sounds of a man moaning in pain. I remember being horrified by the sounds of loud thumping and sliding in the hallway. It was almost as though something or someone was dragging a dead body around our house.

As the sounds grew louder I could feel the sorrow growing thick in the air. It was like a smothering depression that lingered in my ears. My older brother rushed out of bed and grabbed his baseball bat. He then opened the door to the hallway and disappeared into the darkness. While I was still in my bed, paralyzed with fear.

Once the moaning had ceased, I called to my brother and he responded: "Mario!" "Come here!" "Look!" I cautiously scurried out into the hall and made my way to the living room where he stood speechless. I'll never forget the pale look on his face. I asked him what was wrong and he said: " It was a ghost... a little girl..." The rest of our family had heard the commotion and decided to see what was going on. As we all stood there questioning him, he remained silent until my mother had comforted him.

- True Strory - To Be Continued... that's if you want to hear more... ; )

There was a Civil War skirmish near the place where my house stands. A civilian, a woman in a red dress, was accidentally shot by a Confederate soldier, who was immediately gunned down by Union soldiers when they saw this.
Every so often, out of the corner of my eye, I see a woman in red pass by. But as soon as I try a full glance, she's gone.
Once I also think I saw an indefinite shape in my backyard at night. It looked like a rather burly man, and I caught a wisp of grey. Needless to say, I was badly frightened.
I live in a haunted area. More on this later.

There were some interesting stories posted the last time you asked this;

 Horror Experiences  (http://www.badmovies.org/bbs/read.php?f=2&i=44433&t=44229)

And a similar thread was started by Susan here;

 Supernatural Experiences  (http://www.badmovies.org/bbs/read.php?f=2&i=18450&t=18387)

>There are things in the air all around us. If only someone could build a machine

I recall reading a supposedly true account of a scientist who created a machine to allow people to see strange jellyfish like creatures that float in the air around us.

Never had a ghost encounter, was once a firm believer - i'm still open to it. But I used to imagine that maybe there weren't ghosts, that the apparhitions people saw were really some parallell universe that co-existed with our own and that once in awhile we could see glimpses of it's existance within our own. Or another theory I tossed around was that each moment in time is forever frozen, that we exist in a billion places from the moment we are born until we die..that time isn't forward and backward but sorta like cobwebs overlapping over eachother and for whatever reason we can catch a glimpse of something/someone that was in that very spot in the past or the future...like a moving photograph in time. Ok - so I had a wild imagination.

But yes, once in a blue moon i've had that feeling where your hands go to ice and your stomach drops as you are standing alone in a room and stop....realizing you have the very intense sensation that someone is with you, or looking at you. Only once have i felt a hand on me and I remember i was in the kitchen and i turned around and realized nobody was there. It sounds so cliche but i've only ever experienced that once..thank god ;-)

and no, i wasn't smokin the doobie

I forgot that I had made anouther post on this subject.Oh, well hopefully we can get some fresh responses.
As for Susan's comments I wouldn't disagree with them. There is difinatly something weird going on in this world and I suppose there could be a number of equally unusual explanations for them.

Nick, I know this is harping, and I know you probably think I hate you (I don't), but could you at least put a couple of spaces after your periods?  I know this will sound lame, but I couldn't read your longer post, and I desperately wanted to, since this is a topic of some interest to me.  Apologies for this, but my eyes can't follow things right if there aren't enough spaces.  It gives me headaches - bad ones.

That having been said...

I am an actual skeptic.  I find it interesting that more than one story posted here begins with the words "I am a skeptic, but..."

I have had experiences that I have trouble explaining.  Feelings of wrongness, sudden chills, the sensation of a presence...  But, being a skeptic, I chalk it up to misfires in my nervous system.

I am facinated by these stories, though.  I honestly wish I wasn't a skeptical as I am.  I want to believe, I just can't.  I'm too attached to science and rational thought to let myself.

Someone mentioned UFO's, which are a bit easier for me to swallow, but only because of multiple sightings of the same phenomena at the same time.  With many UFO sightings, there are many witnesses of the same thing who are nowhere near each other at the time.  I'm not going to pretend that I know what UFO's actually are, but I am prepared to say that they have been sighted and documanted throughout human history.  If it's some sort of delusion, it's one that a pretty large percentage of people all have on a fairly regular basis.

Of course, I could be biased.  I am from Iowa, after all.  The state is pretty well known for being a UFO hot spot.  Hell, an episode of X-Files was set around Lake Okaboji.

In any case, that's my two cents.

Ghosts could or could not exist, though for me, I haven't seen or heard or felt anything that I honestly believed was supernatural. Sure I've seen wierd stuff, who hasn't, but nothing too wierd, like  wyckednick's slightly amusing [sorry nick] figurine story.

But my ex boss had a wierd experience once.  Her boyfriend lives in Singapore and she saw a ghost one night.  It was of her boyfriends recently deceased uncle who was incredibly religious.  She was going to the toilet and walked right through him accidently.  She said she felt his embarrasment and disgust [she was naked at the time, an image I didn't really need of her]

So please, no naked ghost stories unless they involve people I'd like to picture, and not someone whose naked image scared the crap outta me more than any ghost ever could!

>>Someone mentioned UFO's, which are a bit easier for me to swallow, but only because of multiple sightings of the same phenomena at the same time.<<

Did i ever mention my ufo experience? I used to be a skeptic, thinking it was just the fantasy of people post 50's movies with aliens invading from mars. But I did,  for a full 15 or so seconds.  It seemed to be only  a few hundred feed overhead in front of me.

However - I'm more inclined to believe it was military related, as advanced as it was (hover craft, silent with the bottom of the craft mirroring the night sky so as to make it transparent) Just as soon as it took off (and we're talking miliseconds before it was gone) military craft were slowly following. In retrospect i remember seeing alot of military craft in the area that evening prior (which is highly unusual in my area to that degree).  Now why wouldn't they just come out with it publically? Who knows, maybe it would create mass global fear towards the western power, or perhaps they run out of gas really really fast..lol
I sure as heck am sure it wasn't aliens.

But on that note I saw an interesting speaker on PBS with a slideshow as he ..slide by slide..distanced further and further away from the galaxy. Then the screen showed a myriad of bright lights to which he pointed out - each was a galaxy containing some 200+ billion stars. Imagine the possibilities...imagine the odds

*bump*  :teddyr:

So I was working nightshift last week, and went outside our hall for a small break. This was Wednesday around 01:30 a.m.. There is a sandbox for winter maintenance located at the far end behind one of our halls that I sometimes sit on, and it gives you a great view of the night sky.

Our firm is located in the outskirts of our town in a Industrial park, but it is more like a warehouse district. There's a street leading from town to the highway which is about 2 miles away. During summer there can be some activity from people walking around at night, but I should note that this isn't necessarily a residental area, but the street has two sidewalks ending / beginning at our firm. There is also a bycicle path that runs through fields behind the street and buildings on the opposite side of our firm.

Next to our firm is a narrow (about 15 feet wide) but long stretch of wild growing grass, bushes and a few (small) trees. It starts at the sidewalk and ends behind our firm. I would guess it is about 320 feet long.

As I was sitting there I noticed movement to my left where the street is located. I turn my head and see a person walking back and forth, behind the wild growing gras area. There is a street light shining orange light right there so I can almost clearly make out shoulders, the neck and head but nothing else because of my distance (about 300 feet) and the orange light.

I immediately leaned back afraid the person might see me, which was actually impossible since I was sitting in complete darkness. Still, I was peeking from behind the corner and wondering "what the hell is this guy doing at 01:30 a.m. on a work day?". It seemed like he was walking in circles, never leaving the wild gras area (I assumed he was on the sidewalk). It was just so odd. He walked a few steps, stopping, turning, then walking again then pausing like he was looking at something. At one point he even turned in my direction. This went on for about a minute when suddenly he disappeared. I thought that he must be standing behind one of the bushes. A few seconds later a car drove by. I waited for him to walk out the wild gras area but, nothing. After staring a few minutes I diceded to walk there to see if anybody was there, maybe hiding? I was indeed a bit creeped out but nonetheless, I went there to take a look but saw nothing suspicious. I looked up and down the street but there wasn't a single soul.

Had this person walked a straight line in one direction I wouldn't have given this another thought. But this was so strange.

In the morning when my shift was over I took another look on my way home. Estimating the height of wild gras and bushes I wouldn't have seen the person's shoulder, neck and head if the person was standing on the sidewalk. Unless he was 7 feet tall. I came to the conclusion that the person must have been actually inside the wild gras area, which I thought was even more creepier.

This whole sighting seemed unreal and didn't make much logical sense the more I thought about it. Did I see a ghost? I don't know, but it was a creepy experience for sure.

I'm a big fan of the subject in movies etc. but I can't really say I believe in it because I never had any encounters with the paranormal myself. Even though I think I would be open to it...same goes for UFOs etc.

I don't believe that the dead return or hang around for any reason; I do believe in demonic spirits, and that they account for hauntings.
