Title: What movie do you truely HATE?
Post by: Grumpy Guy on December 31, 2003, 07:13:10 AM
I was looking at the "funniest movie" thread, along with the favorite movie thread, and I started to wonder...

What movie do you absolutely HATE with a fiery burning passion that well up from deep within your soul?

Or, more to the point, what movies do you hate, and why?

I'm not asking what movies you think are the worst ever made - some movies that I hate are really outstanding films that I just can't stand.  No, I want to know what movies truely gall you, or what movies make you angry, or what movies you just don't like.

For example:  I realize that I will get flamed for this, but I really can't stand The Godfather.  It bores me to tears.  I keep hearing about what a complete masterpiece it is, but I can't get through more than a half hour of it before I find myself wishing that the Corleones (I am quite sure I misspelled that, and I apologize) and everyone related to them would die a horrible death.  And then, when they do, I'm still not satisfied.

I also hate Evil Dead.  Evil Dead suffers from a few problems that combine to recieve my hatred.  For one thing, the characters are hopelssly stupid.  They don't even make a good try at leaving.  I realize that any attempt to escape on their part would have been futile, but damn, man.  At the end of the film, somebody's head melts into play-dough in one of the worst fx scenes since Reptilicus.  And all anybody can talk about is how great it is.  It infuriates me.

So, there are two of my picks.  What are yours?

Air America.
It could have been a fun adventure movie with Mel Gibson as a pilot in Central America in the 1980s.  It was a mess, and boring.  I hate movies that coulda & shoulda been good (good cast, interesting scenario) but that wind up being awfully bad.

I hate that movie such a passion that whenever I hear someone say even the nicest thing about it my blood begins to boil. Not only do I hate it as a fan of Godzilla movies and giant monster movies in general, I think its the epitome of everything that is wrong with modern movies. Also, the arrogance displayed by Emmerich and Devlin behind the scenes while making that movie has them on my permanent s**t list.

Shoot me, but I have always hated The Exorcist.  I was never frightened by it, probably because at the time it first was released in 1973 I was 11 and really didn't understand what it was supposed to be about.  By the time I  actually got to see it I had seen so many rip-offs and spoofs that the impact was like being hit by a banana.  Too much hype and hoopla, the thing bores the dung outta me.

Normally I just avoid movies that I have severe reservations about like anything with Jim Carrey.  But I can think of two movies off the top of my head that I refuse to watch even five minutes of ever again!

STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER was seen at the theater.  It was the only movie I've ever watched while thinking "It's going to get better" and then have the closing credits roll.

INDEPENDENCE DAY was just too homogenized for me.  I felt ripped off because the only parts worth watching were seen on the commercials.  It took a while, but the movie finally received a backlash after false praise hyped the movie up to be on par with the original STAR WARS.

A movie I don't actively hate, but am stunned by the popularity of it is THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.  If you're gullible enough to think your are watching a documentary then it might have the same perverse fascination as viewing a fatal car crash.  But it you look at it as a scary movie it's poorly done.

Any Adam Sandler movie.I hate his movies with a firey passion, and hope that he is the next SNL memeber to die.
Me, My Self, and Irene.I TRULY HATE THIS MOVIE.I have friends that love it, and if they want to watch it I will honestly go home rather than see that huge peice of s**t.
Freddy got fingered.Guy jacks off a elephant, need I say more.
Bowling for Columbine.I hate it because it could have been a great movie about the duality of American culture obssesion with guns and are high death rates by them.Instead it turns into a hypocritical agenda driven movie that completely contradicts every point it trys to make.

Not trying to cook you from within, but I've always liked Godzilla 98, despite it's inadequacies, and think it is one of the high mediocre Godzilla films.  In my opinion, it's far better than Godzilla v. Megalon and Godzilla v. King Ghidorah, both of which are achingly stupid.

(Granted, Godzilla 98 ain't that much better...)

Now, on a different note, could you elaborate on Emmerich/Devlin's arrogance?  Either that or point me to a site that does.  I do not doubt (a few of the interviews I read/ seen of the two since then has left me convinced on that point); I'm just curious.

I agree about ID4 but my hate for the film lowered after seeing GODZILLA. At least ID4 was an actual movie.

But at least GODZILLA VS. MEGALON and GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH are actual Godzilla movies and while they may be extremely stupid they're still more imaginative than anything in the Emmerich/Devlin. Pick up a copy of "Japan's Favorite Mon-star (The Unauthorized Biography of Godzilla)" and read the chapter on the behind the scenes of the Tristar Godzilla and then tell me it doesn't make you personally angry.

I just realized I didn't elaborate on why I didn't like DEAD ALIVE.   I just thought it was silly, and not scary at all.  It bugs me how people point to its use of gore as an indicator of what a great horror movie it is.  If that's the case, then Monty Python movies are all horror classics.

Resident evil, for being a dumb pile of s**t

Eecks Vs. Sever for being a dumb boring pile of s**t that deserves to rot in hell and for not even being a real movie.

Not trying to knock you or anything, but how can you so strongly condemn something that you've never seen?  Are you sure it's the movies you hate, or is it really the music?

8 Mile was an incredibly well done film.  Granted, it was fairly predicatble, and filled with more profanity than it really needed to get its point across, but the acting in it (even from Martial Mathers) was excellent, and it had really good pacing.  What's more, it didn't give the expected Hollywood ending of the main character being either a.)discovered, and made into a huge star, or b.) shot dead in the end.

I can understand not wanting to see it because you don't like rap.  That I get.  But then, it's really the music that you hate, not the movie.

You know, I forgot about Eecks Vs. Sever.  You're absolutely right - it was horrible.  It makes me mad, because Banderas is better than that.  It was horribly directed - although I'll say this:  It does take some kind of talent to produce a whole series of Fight Scenes To Go To Sleep By.

Blech.

After STARGATE and INDEPENDENCE DAY I'd completely given up on anything involving Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin so I never watched GODZILLA(1998).

I have the gut feeling that those two are the "Dino De Laurentiis" of this generation.

I'll make it a point to check the book out, though I despute Godzilla v. Megalon being imaginative in any sense of the term.

(I'd also despute it being a Godzilla movie - Jet Jaguar gets more screen time than Our Hero - but that's probably just my dislike of the movie showing.)

Thanks for the info.

I absolutely hate cop comedies, like the "Beverly Hills Cop"  series, which always seemed to me boring, slow, and unfunny, or the first "Bad Boys" for the same reasons + MTV filmmaking. I actually enjoyed "Bad Boys II", though, it had some insane comedy and even several gruesome deaths.

I agree, I'm no fan of rap, but 8 MILE wasn't a bad movie.  Not great either, but not terrible and probably better than a lot of other "rap movies."

I forgot how much I hated SIGNS, though it isn't the film so much that I hate but that it seems like so many other people out there were willing to accept this ridiculous film.  It was a lame family drama with aliens.  I think someone here or on one of the other movie boards said that it could have been on the Pax channel.

Still, I hate DEAD ALIVE more because it took a sub-genre that I love and turned it into lame computer lab nerd humor.

Well I don't know if I "hate" any film, but I know the ones I don't like:

Battlefield Earth - Almost walked out. Travolta is great, but he was lucky to find work after that one.

Howard the Duck - The only movie I have ever walked out of.

Die Hard Movies - Could never get into these movies.

Leathal Weapon - All of them.

Disaster and Airport Movies - Now AIRPLANE was great. The dramas are kinda boring. May has well watch the news.

Beverly Hills Cop Movies - First one was ok, but wasn't that crazy about it.

Mafia Movies - Gangster movies I like, but not mafia ones. Only seen THE GODFATHER (good) because Brando was in it. DONNIE BRASCO wasn't bad either.

Police Dramas - I like bank robbery movies with clever or brutal situations, but not police dramas.

Pro Wrestler starring in Movies - Except THEY LIVE(good) and Hogan in ROCY III (with Thinderlips) unless the movie is "about" Pro Wrestling then I can bear it.

Here are some bad movies in general :

Blair Witch Project
Battlefield Earth
The Dead Hate the Living
The Rats are Coming ! The Werewolves are Here !
Ghost Brigade

Without a doubt, my most painful movie watching experience of recent memory was "Mission to Mars."  What a cluster, which is really odd since since I like Don Cheadle, Gary Sinise is okay and I can stomach Tim Robbins as an actor (but not as a political commentator).

I have never seen a single Adam Sandler movie, and never will watch one.

I'll probably catch grief for this one, but I also hated "Contact."   Arrrrggggghhhh.  That movie was boorrrriiiiinnngggg.  And please don't give me any crap about not understanding it - I understood it just fine; I just hated it.

On a side note, I have to say that I enjoyed "The Blair Witch Project" and here's why.  It was DIFFERENT and done on a shoestring budget.  Sure, there were holes you could drive a Mack truck through, but in the theatre, I did not care about those.  And true, most of the time I was sitting there laughing, because, well, I was just enjoying a movie that ventured out beyond "the formula."  It did more (or hey, at least tried to) with manipulation of the audience's imagination, rather than hitting us over the head with fast moving fx and gore.  That movie was definitely "love or hate," which is ONE measure of 'art,' I guess.  (I admit I don't see a lot of independent films anymore, so BWP just reminded me of what can be done when you get outside the big drek peddling mogul houses).

Man, hate is such a strong word but I'd have to say The Fast and the Futile and 2 Fast Too Futile flicks. The only good things about those films are the action sequences. As far as plot goes... over the top, Hollywood excrement.

A group of punks acting bad in a bunch of rice rockets. Man, a GTO with a V-10 would chew them f**kers up and spit'em out, period.

House of 1000 corpses is the biggest pile of festering, pointless s**t i have ever had the gross misfortune to watch. And dont give me any of this 'you dont understand horror movies' - this is NOT a horror film, it wants to be a horror film and fails completely and miserably.

>Not trying to knock you or anything, but how can you so strongly condemn

Yes, it's the "music" that I hate. I think it sounds horrible and is not the least bit (for me anyway) pleasant to listen to. Not to mention how dumb I think rappers look flinging their hands around as they "perform". Because of this, any movie that centers around rap is automatically one I don't ever want to see.

>I agree, I'm no fan of rap, but 8 MILE wasn't a bad movie. Not great either, but not

Whenever I hear the name 8 Mile, I can't help thinking of the ad for the DVD, which promised it would have exclusive "rap battles". The whole concept of a "rap battle" where they stand there yelling at each other and moving their hands like they're waxing an invisible car just strikes me as being too stupid for words.

When Godzilla's on the screen, sure, both are entertaining.  But with Godzilla v. Megalon, that's what, the last 15 minutes?  I'm sorry, it's not enough.

Now Godzilla v. King Ghidorah might have been good, if they didn't have that REALLY REALLY REALLY STUPID time travel plot.  Not one second of it make sense and it drags the whole film down.

Actually, up until Godzilla 2000, I don't think any of Godzilla's films are all that great.  The fights tend to be a bit tedious bouts of halitosis, with risible effects here and there.

(And before someone says "Come on, there Godzilla films!  Effects aren't that important."  I'd like to point to the new Gamera films, which are consistently better than anything Toho put out in that period.  It's a sad thing when a Gamera Movie kicks a Godzilla Movie's ass, but it happens again and again...)

I enjoy Godzilla 98 and I'm not ashamed of it.  The movie's bad - I admit that - but there are worse giant monster movies out there.  (Yongari/Reptilian springs to mind.)
