Title: Best Zombie Movies?
Post by: Zombie Movie Fan on January 28, 2004, 01:37:01 AM
What are the best zombie movies to watch? I'm not looking for best BAD movies here... I'm looking for some seriously good zombie movies.

Or do good zombie movies not exist?

The Romero trilogy, at least the first two.

Let Sleeping Corpses Lie is seriously underrated...it's probably as good as any.

The Fulci stuff is bad in a lot of ways, but fun.

And try as I might, I can't keep away from Night of the Zombies.  Or Burial Ground.

Some like Dead Alive...I don't because I think it's too comic but others think it's a fun film.

Zombie Holocaust and Nightmare City I've never really cared for.

Zombie 3 and Zombie 4 are the bottom of the barrel, probably.

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, while obviously a b-flick, is an extremely fun and witty b-flick.  Check it out.  Also, an Australian film called Undead that I think is gonig to be released in the U.S. later this year is quite awesome.

Also, The Dead Hate the Living rocks.  Loads of inside jokes for b-movie fans.

Eh, different strokes.  No zombie movie can be good that has only two zombies [three if you count the guy that looks like Rob Zombie.]  Typical full moon stuff, I guess.

However, the worst I've seen were probably Zeder and Zombie Lake.

Don't forget Return of the Living Dead-- works as both a black comedy and a horror flick, with a fun punk soundtrack.

Also, I haven't seen it, but I've heard great things about Wild Zero.

Wild Zero is more like a music video that happens to have zombies in it.

Along with really bad CGI.

Post by: Max Gardner on January 28, 2004, 04:45:52 PM
Obviously I'm a fan of the Romero trilogy, but Wild Zero is great weird fun - imagine Plan 9 from Outer Space starring the Japanese equivalent of the Ramones and you'll have a basic idea what it's about.  Still, I'd have to say the best zombie movie I've ever seen is Cemetery Man, aka Dellamorte Dellamore, which is possibly the only existentialist zombie film around.  Brilliant dark humor offsets what is otherwise a fairly melancholy film about insanity and loneliness (and zombies, but they're sort of beside the point).

I've always liked Night Life myself. Bunch of kids get in an accident and are killed (possibly with toxic chemicals), the freezer at the funeral home breaks down and (if I recall correctly) the place is hit by lightning. The teenagers are re-animated as staggering zombies. In a weird twist, a zombie girl seems to have a thing for the hero, a teenager who works at the funeral home, even though she didn't like him when she was alive.

"The Serpent and the Rainbow"  It might be more of a vodoo movie about Zombies than zombie movie, but it's still a good one.

Aside from the obvious Romero flicks, I'd have to say that I really enjoyed Re-Animator.

I am sure they are out there. Of course, it depends upon what one's definition of good is. As for myself, I like the older zombie films, so I like the American "I Walked with a Zombie" and the American "White Zombie" w/ Bela Lugosi, as the zombie master. And there is the more recent British "28 Days Later," which I did not particularly like, but, alot of other people did. And as Max mentioned, there is the Italian "Cemetery Man," which I did like, and which is reveiwed at this site, if ianybody is interested.

dawn of the dead is a seriously sick movie. i love tom savini as the guy with the mallet cos he just doesnt give a f**k how hard he hits those bastards with that mallet, haha, i also think night of the living dead is an awsome film (the original not the remake) i just love it when those rednecks are turturing the zombies at the end & they just hang the zombies & start shooting the kneecaps off. sick!!!!!!!!!!!!

City of the Living Dead aka Gates of Hell is great. So is The Beyond. I also enjoyed Burial Ground, though it is kinda corny!

This is off topic, but could a zombie die of cold or electricity?

"BATEMAN!!!!!!"

Post by: Bgrade on February 16, 2004, 10:29:20 PM
According to "The Zombie survival guide"

Electricity can temporially stun a zombie's muscles as with a normal human.
However to kill one with it the voltage has to be so high it starts them on fire or destroys tissue.  Stopping their heart does no good.

Cold just preserves a zombie until it thaws.

"From Dusk Till Dawn" (do a group of vamps count as Zombies?  seems to be different in depiction from something like "Vampires").  jmc is right, The Blind Dead films (1. "Noche del terror ciego, La"; 2. "Ataque de los muertos sin ojos"; 3. "Buque maldito, El"; 4. "Noche de las gaviotas, La") are great if you can find'em (3 & 4 are in the "Deadtime Stories" PD pack, heavily edited though).  Though 1, 2 and 4 are the best, to me.

from SGC2C:
"SG:  It doesn’t matter Moltar, can’t you see what I’m doing here, I’m holding my own urine in a cup because I have responsibilities.  Won’t you help?"

My favorite would be based on what I have seen are:

1) Zombie
2) Night of the Living Dead
3) Tombs of the Blind Dead
4) Return of the Living Dead
5) Return of the Blind Dead
6) Army of Darkness
7) Evil Dead II
8) Evil Dead
9) Return of the Living Dead II
10) Day of the Dead

Honorable Mention go to:

Blind Dead III (also known by other titles)
Plague of Zombies
I Walked with a Zombie
White Zombie
Plan 9 From Outer Space
The Beyond (didn't really like this one)
Dead Alive
Bad Taste
28 Days Later
Rainbow and the Serpent
The Believers
Teenage Zombies

There are some others that I can name that are marginal or borderline zombie films, actually the Evil Dead films are different type of zombie films in my opinion.  There are many great Vampire/Zombie type films out there also. The definition becomes blurred, but I really like LAST MAN ON EARTH.

OK, here's the problem: Somebody asks for some "seriously good" zombie films and then gets recommendations like "City of the Living Dead," "Gates of Hell" and "The Beyond." First of all, these movies suck. Secondly, "The Beyond" is not even a zombie movie. I know there are some horror fans who like these wacky Italian splatter films but from a filmmaking and storytelling perspective, these films are atrocious. Unless you are a horror aficionado who cares more about blood and guts than a good script, don't bother with most of the Italian stuff.

SO, with that said, here is a list of the zombie movies that are truly worth seeing:

1. Night of the Living Dead (original) -- The scariest movie of all time. This one started it all.

2. Dawn of the Dead -- The best zombie film ever.

3. Day of the Dead -- The final act of Romero's trilogy is underrated. A lot of folks criticize it but, while it's no "Dawn," this movie is a blast to watch and features many of the same Romero trademarks that made "Dawn" and "Night" so great.

4. Zombie -- The only Fulci movie worth seeing. It's not as good as the Romero films but it's still nasty and disturbing as hell. This movie features the famous wood spike through the eye scene, plus a scene of a zombie fighting a shark. And, the last scene of zombies wandering across the Brooklyn Bridge with the World Trade Center in the background was awesome to begin with, but takes on additional relevance after 9/11.

5. Return of the Living Dead -- Good fun but a little too cornball for my tastes. Basically a comedy, but it's still pretty well done.

6. Let Sleeping Corpses Lie -- Underrated and little known English film. Steals a lot from Romero but what great zombie movie doesn't? Still one of the better zombie films out there and definitely worth tracking down.

7. Resident Evil -- An above average zombie flick. As a huge fan of the video game, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit when I was expecting to hate it. There are some great scenes and it keeps up the tension pretty much to the end. It also had a decent budget so it looks good.

8. 28 Days Later -- A quality "end of the world/zombie" flick that instantly made it into my list of fave zombie movies.

That's it, friends! There are no other good zombie movies. Don't listen to any other recommendations on this list. Most are either not true zombie films or they just plain suck and are being recommended by people who like "BAD" movies. Hopefully the new "Dawn of the Dead" remake will hold up and join the ranks of the above films, but clearly we zombie fans need some more quality flicks to choose from. It's pretty sad that a top-10 list of zombie flicks can't be compiled because so many of the offerings are so truly awful.

My personal favourites are definately Brain Dead (Dead Alive) and Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man).

Think what you like about any others, but these are the ones I love.

Title: Re: Best Zombie Movies?
Post by: TheEvilDoctor on March 20, 2004, 08:37:58 AM
In my opinion Braindead (aka dead alive in the us of a) is the best zombiemovie ever made.
Also the evil dead movies are worth seeing, but they have 2 or 3 zombies each so maybe it's not your thing. It isn't all about zombies but about a demonic presense which turns people into zombies but does a lot of other stuff too.
Braindead is just all-out splatter zombiefun with a lot of comedy. No atmosphere or scary moments just a very fun movie.

Of course the Romero films but my guess is you already seen them.

Title: Re: Best Zombie Movies?
Post by: Hugomarink on March 22, 2004, 01:44:20 PM
The "Evil Dead" movies are classics but I don't consider them zombie movies. The baddies in those movies are demons, not zombies. I also can't recommend "Dead Alive" as it's just so over-the-top absurd that I can't even classify it as a horror movie. It's a comedy with a ton of blood and guts special effects and that's about it. A movie has to be at least somewhat scary or creepy to be considered a horror film and "Dead Alive" is neither. It's just silly.

Title: Re: Best Zombie Movies?
Post by: jmc on March 22, 2004, 03:27:27 PM
I agree completely about DEAD ALIVE.   I've never understood why people have put that movie in the same league as the horror films.  Comedic gore just doesn't have the same effect...there are a ton of less gorier films that I've liked better than DEAD ALIVE.

I think the new DAWN film is probably a better horror film than the original, and definitely better than DAY OF THE DEAD.  But that's because Romero quit focusing on the horror elements of the films after NOTLD.  He considers his DAWN to be more of an action/adventure film with a lot of satire thrown in...and I don't know what he considers DAY to be, but I don't think it was much of a horror film [Romero says it's his favorite of his films...has there ever been anyone with less understanding of what made them successful in the first place?]

So yeah, the new film is a better horror film than the original, but not a better film overall--the original has better characters and probably is a little more uplifting.
But it's slow in places and only occasionally grabs you by the throat.  The new film is relentless, throwing just about everything else aside in its desire to assault the audience.  But it paints itself into a corner in some ways.  Still, best horror film I've seen in years.....

Cemetary Man is so unbelievably great! I love this movie.
Return Of The Living Dead also rocks.
Not sure if this can really be counted as a zombie flick but Night Of The Creeps is definatley a rocking movie and well worth checking out.

But the thread starter never asked for horror movies. He asked for zombie movies.
Dead alive is just that; fun with zombies! It's not scary but it's full of gore and zombies and very funny, but it's absolutely no horrormovie. Yet it's a fun movie and worth checking (I was laughing the whole movie)

Easy answer.  "Dead Alive"  by Peter Jackson and Romero's "Night of the Living Dead."  These are flat out classic zombie movies.  By the way, don't do buisness with Movies Unlimited, or you will never see your movies.

the sequel of "the night of the living dead" its ok, i wont compare it with the original because i think they are different from each other so its not a bad film.
down of the death, i love this film,  and i would say that 28 days later its one of the best, but guess this is not a zombie movie, so lets pick "day of the dead".

Could someone recommend a good zombie film to watch that I haven't seen already? Bear in mind I live in England so we've only just recently been allowed to buy I Spit On Your Grave.

Here's what I've already seen, or least remember viewing whilst sober...
The Dead trilogy (Night, Dawn, Day)
Return of the Living Dead parts 1,2 and 3
Children of the Living Dead
Zombie Flesh Eaters
Brain Dead (Dead Alive)

Also, a little off topic, could someone be kind enough, without giving too much away, to tell me a brief outline of what I Spit On Your Grave is about?

dirtcreature:
"could someone be kind enough, without giving too much away, to tell me a brief outline of what I Spit On Your Grave is about?"
.  .  .  .  Not to be annoying, but that is an impossible task.  The plot consists of two things and maria paula gave you one, rape.  You can figure it out from there, and since you know of the film you already know the plot, it is simple (I'm simplifying, but...).  A great review exists at Joe Bob's website, but it gives away plot.   Hope it helps, it would have been better to have someone else help you with this.
.  .  .  .  Zombie films:  go to zombiemart (http://www.zombiemart.com) to get a thorough listing of the sub-genre.  Or else follow you fellow posters, let the board be your guide.  And a lot of people seem to agree on this, watch the Amando de Ossorio (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0652261/) series (you may have already seen his worst) and Lucio Fulci (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002086/) films.

"...i have seen his worst... "
.  .  .  .  I was actually refering to dirtcreature's reference to Zombie Flesh Eaters, which is an approximate distribution title here in the US for three or so films.  It however usually means Buque maldito, El (cut and paste works niclely).  So I meant that I think, and others do too, that the third installment is his worst of the Knights Templar series.
.  .  .  .  It's gotta be nice to get the unedited versions of Jacinto Molina (http://www.midnight1.com/directors_paul_naschy.asp) and Amando de Ossorio (http://www.midnight1.com/directors_amandode_ossorio.asp) films.  In the US, they edit, heavily (not as heavily as others, we are actually lucky, comparatively, as far as I know), many films, and (one of) the only outlet(s) for uncut foriegn horror is through the links.  But they are only DVD-R's with a trailer on them as an extra feature.
.  .  .  .  I actually like the five (Malenka, too) de Ossorio films that I have seen, and really don't consider them particularly bad.

Zombies' Lake....hey it was fun and packed with nudity and humor.

Haven't seen Dead Alive but want to really really bad.

Yeah, I ordered ZOMBIE LAKE from Deep Discount DVD a while back and it's supposed to be here any day now....I can't wait.  Such is the life of a bad movie junkie.

LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE is a pretty underrated one that I like an awful lot...I think it's at least as good as the Fulci films, if not better.

I agree that italian zombie movies are quite stupip like "city of the living dead" becouse the zombies in that simply vanish into thin air it suks. There are 2 itialian zombie films that i like they are "zombie flesh eaters 1+2) they are good they are scary and there is alot of blood and guts in them it is based on a island filled with voodo and a disease is spreading which is turning people into zombies but there is a doctor that is tryin to get rid of it.But he cant!!!! Another one that i like is "night of the livign dead" of course the original is better and scarier but i like the remake of it also simply because i find in that one the zombies are better and also the acting is a little better in it.The plot of that movie is they are stuck in a farm house with creeping zombies tryin to get in.My overall film has to be "day of te living dead" simply because it is scary and there is alot of blood i am a collector of zombie films myself there is still a few i havent got.

Of course good zombie movies exist.  If you want some good ones, check out Romero's Living Dead trilogy (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead), Lucio Fulci's Zombie, Fulci's City of the Living Dead, and Jorge Grau's Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (aka Don't Open the Window, aka Breakfast at the Manchester Morgue).  Some might also include Fulci's The Beyond with this list, but I don't really consider it to be a zombie movie, even though there are zombies in it.  I'd also recommended Tombs of the Blind Dead and Return of the Blind, but again I don't really consider them zombie movies per say.

And just for the hell of it, I'm going to list some good-bad ones as well:  Umberto Lenzi's Nightmare City (aka City of the Walking Dead), Bruno Mattei's Hell of the Living Dead (aka Night of the Zombies), and even Fulci's/Mattei's Zombi 3.  Oh yeah, and don't let me forget Burial Ground: Nights of Terror!
