Title: Best movie soundtracks
Post by: wickednick on February 11, 2004, 04:48:42 AM
I don't think this has been asked in a while.
What movie do you think have the best soundtracks.I like heavy metal so I tend to skew in that direction.
My personal favorites are: SFW,The Crow,The Blues Brothers, and Demon Knight.
SWF probably has the best soundtrack out of those.I mean comon it has GWAR.What could be better than that.

I'd have to go with Fight Club.  It has some of the best tunage I've ever head; all of it by the Dust Brothers.

The Big Lebowski's soundtrack is an obscuro record-geek's dream: Captain Beefheart, The Monks, Esquivel, Kraftwerk, plus some nice forgotten songs by Bob Dylan and Kenny Rogers.

Also, I've never seen it, but Freddy Got Fingered seems to have a damn good punk soundtrack, including Iggy Pop singing "I've Gotta Be Me!"

They have the Sex Pistols on there too.

Personally, I gotta go with the classics....Deep Red, any of the other Goblin stuff, Psycho, Taxi Driver.  I hate the way that movies today just have a random collection of songs, though it's worked for a handful of movies.  I remember the REPO MAN soundtrack fondly, though at least in that case they also had some music composed for the film.

But this generation isn't going to have anything that becomes part of the popular culture like the JAWS or PSYCHO theme--just a bunch of disposable pop songs that cause the movie to look dated and be thrown in the trash as soon as the musical fads change.

The only sound track I have (and I didn't see the movie) is from The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization-- basically the early 1980's West Coast punk scene.  It's got X, Fear, and a bunch of others I can't recall.  Kick ass albumn.

For instrumental stuff:
The Goblin stuff, with a particular affinity for Suspiria.
Carpenter's self-composed scores.
Anything Ifukube, particularly the original '54 Godzilla, and Mechagodzilla's funky 70's groove theme.
For song-related stuff:
The only compilation soundtrack I own is for Bad Channels, and I only bought it for the song Manic Depresso by Sykotik Sinfony (they have another song on there that sounds a lot like Chuck Moseley-era Faith No More, but  the rest of the sountrack sucks aside from the two BOC tunes).
I, like Nick, tend to lean towards the metal side of things, so some other soundtracks that have a lot of good tunes are Freddy vs. Jason (lots of nu-metal crap too, but some good stuff in there), the new Texas Chainsaw, Underworld (not metal, but cool nonetheless), Faust: Love of the Damned, and the first Ginger Snaps (lots of Fear Factory tunes on that one).

DEATH WISH II - THE best music Jimmy Page has made post-Zeppelin. With this he showed his true potential as a composer and never lived up to it afterward.

Okay, guilty pleasure time....

The soundtrack to "Footloose"?  Frickin' AWESOME!

I also kind of like the "Top Gun" soundtrack.  Hopefully that doesn't make me a Kenny Loggins fan...

I thought the soundtrack of "Crocodile Dundee" was cool. The aussie style of the music as original, compared to a lot of the stuff current at the time.

I mostly like song-related soundtracks:

Bullets Over Broadway  (great mix of 1920s originals and excellent remakes of songs of that era)

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas  (links between cuts are Johnny Depp reciting various Hunter Thompson-inspired reveries from the book/film)

O Brother Where Art Thou?  (just great folk stuff)

Cold Mountain (haven't even seen the film -- and don't plan on it -- but the music is fantastic -- Jack White of the White Stripes does 5 songs on it, all acoustic, some of'em traditional)

Just looked over my collection and realised I have upwards of 40 soundtracks in my collection.  That's more than I have DVD's!

I've found that The Coen Brothers and Tarantino soundtracks are consistantly good.  Out of them my favourites are: Oh Brother Where art thou and Jackie Brown.

I like David Arnolds stuff [does the recent Bond films]  Harry Gregson-Williams [The Rock] and have found Eric Serra's stuff to be interesting as well [Fifth Element, Goldeneye]

Personally, my favourite soundtracks out of the lot are: The Jackal, Ocean's 11 [New Version] Run Lola Run, Swordfish, The Animatrix, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Casino and Donnie Darko.

Long list, I know, but I love my movies, and my soundtracks!
