O.K ,How many people on this board ever rented a movie at a rental store and found out when they got home that they already have the movie they just rented????????

I think a person would have to be so stoned out of their mind or have super short term memory..like 5 minutes worth to not know that they already owned a movie.

I mean come on! Even if I owned over 5,000 movies I would STILL know that I owned it.

.  .  .  .  Perhaps the film rented goes by more than one title?  That's really the only scenerio I could think of this rationally occuring.  However, I am absent minded, so perhaps it could occur.

I've got one better for you...
Years ago I rented a horror movie (Dr. Butcher MD if anyone cares) and I get home to put the tape in (yes, tapes back in those days...). I sit down and on comes Willy Wonka. I look at the box and the sticker says Dr. Butcher and then I pop the tape out and the sticker says Willy Wonka. How nice I thought it would be if some poor family rented Willy Wonka and some little kid was watching Dr. Butcher.

Rent a movie that I own?  HAHAH....I only wish.

I bought The legend of drunken master on DVD when it irst came out and I liked it.  SO one day I was in SAm Goody and I saw Iron Monkey 2 and Drunken MAster 2.  Now seeing as Iron monkey was in theatres I remembered that the movie was old so that's why part 2 was out on DVD.  So I used the same logic for Drunken MAster 2.  So I bought it.  Then I get home, and got ready to watch both movies So I pop in Legend  of Drunken MAster and I watch it.  Then i put in Drunken MAster 2 and then I got mad.  They were the same movie.  The back was written in chinese and the names were different but dang it they were the same movie.  So I went back to sam goody and they said that since I already opened it I couldn't return it.  SO now I have Legend  of drunken MAster and Drunken MAster 2 .

Almost did the same thing during christmas as I saw JAckie Chans Black Dragons, but then I said "that reminds me of Miracles" so I didn't get it.  Sure enough I went back to look later and asw that i said "Formerly known as Miracles."

MAn JAckie chan movies are tricky

I once rented a movie, then not three days later it was on tv.   Didn't even know it was coming on.  Damn waste of money.  That's about as bad as it gets though.

I've never rented a movie I owned, but I have had that experience of renting a movie and turns out a completely different one is in the case.

Most recently, I rented a movie from Blockbuster and they have those little yellow tabs on the DVD cases now to keep people from ripping off the store.

I must have had an especially tired service rep because when I got home, the yellow tab was still in the case and I couldn't open it. Got a free rental out of that deal...

The real question is, who has accidentally returned a personal video instead of the store's video? Never happened to me, but it is a nightmare that everyone most likely has...

That would be Corky Woodward, sheriff of Morris County in Kansas, back in 1986, who accidentally returned a rented VCR without removing the homemade sex of himself and his wife Dannette;

Returned sex tape (http://www.snopes.com/risque/porn/video.htm)

Title: OT: "tab," "Corky," and another mishap story

.  .  .  .  Regarding the "tab" still being left on.  I actually tried to remove this one night.  I used a pen (I'm not very handy or creative) and broke the tip off it.  Luckily only a little ink leaked out.
.  .  .  .  Corky Woodward and "Video Violence" in the same year, hmm... (I have yet to rent the film, but it reminded me of Andrew's review).
.  .  .  .  Since everyone's riffing, the whole porno tape, oops-mistakenly-put-the-wrong-tape... thing happened to someone I know's friend (they wouldn't lie), and it was a Christmas tape no less.

from "Bog Creatures, The" (2003) (Michael Mosley & Joshua Park)
Nick Warren: "Screw that, I say we get the hell outta here."
Steve-o Dyson: "They'll kill us if we try."
Nick Warren: "It's day time Steve-O!"
Steve-o Dyson: "They're not vampires Nick, they function during the day."

I actually have done this.  Quite a few years ago, I saw a movie on the New Release wall called, I think, Dinosaur Planet.   When I got home, I discovered it was a crappy re-release of a movie called The Planet of the Dinosaurs, which I owned.  The re-release packaging had no description and no pictures from the actual movie, just pictures of fossils and those paintings you see in National Geographic magazines.
A friend of mine rented an MST3K episode, The Gunslingers, I think, from that same video store.  Someone had taped Miracle on 32nd Street over it.
Another time, we were going to rent Skinwalkers, a PBS-funded Werewolf lookalike starring Lou Diamond Philips.  When we got back to the house, someone had put Slaughter Studios (which sucks) in the case and we had to sit through that instead.

Me and a friend actually had that porn-instead-of-what-we-wanted tape situation, in a fashion.  When we were but little tots, we went to the video store and rented a bunch of kiddy tapes, and after we watched Milo and Otis [it's an animal buddy film] at the end of the tape instead of end credits, it busted into hardcore porn.  Someone must've taped over the end in a homage to Fight Club [which of course hadn't been made into a movie yet, but still]

That was how little dean learnt the wonders of the birds and the bees, in this case the birds and the bees, and the bee's twin sister...

I did it with buying a movie, I already owned scream baby scream and was at a rental store closing sale and bought a movie Nightmare House.  Put the movie in and found out it was the same thing.  Good thing the movie was only a dollar
