Title: What movies pump you up?
Post by: wickednick on February 23, 2004, 06:31:39 AM
When ever I need to get really syked up for something, Ive got several movies I like to watch.
Ready to Rumble, Rocky 1 and 2, and Vision Quest are all movies I like to watch before, I go paint balling or wrestling.I find that if I watch these movies I can generally kick more ass than if I didn't watch them.

Whenever I've been slacking off at the gym, and really need inspiration, I'll pop in Pumping Iron. Plenty of inspiration, and Lou Ferrigno's dad is hilarious (he's like a middle-aged Squiggy, but more bossy). I have one friend who loves this movie as much as I do.

Just got the 25th anniversary DVD for Christmas, and I'm still looking for the right time to watch it. My wife has seen the movie once, and that's enough for her, while the friend who likes it as much as I do is busy lately. I could watch it alone, but it just wouldn't seem right.

Some scenes from movies that really get my blood going:  The big Mechagodzilla revea in the original '74 G vs. MGl, with that most badass of 70's theme suites.
The "I kick ass for the Lord!" scene in Dead Alive.
Any of the action scenes in Blade 2.
Otherwise, a really good kung fu movie, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, whatever you've got.

Any movie where the hero gives someone a good ass-kicking.  A prime example is WALKING TALL.

My friends and I always watch Cecil B. Demented before we start making a short movie. Also, it might seem like an odd choice, but Dali & Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou has a way of pumping me up; I think it has to do with the whole "f**k you" attitude with which it was made. Whenever I really need to get pumped, I watch Un Chien Andalou, put on my 45 of "Anarchy in the UK," down a bottle of Code Red Mountain Dew, blast myself with a fan, and read alien conspiracy literature. After that, I'm ready to rock!

Every single time Gunnery Sgt. Hartman opens his mouth in "Full Metal Jacket" I get all sorts of fired up and feel like doing push ups.  That probably has something to do with the healthy dose of brainwashing I received in basic training, though...

You should get one of the R. Lee Ermy motivational dolls. I'm not sure if they're staill available, but you can probably find one on eBay. You press a button and it screams at you in Ermy's voice.

Go here for EVERYTHING R. Lee Ermey:

http://www.rleeermey.com/

And yes, the motivational doll is available in "Salty Language" or "Xtra Salty Language"

I'm gonna have to get my dad one of those for his upcoming birthday!
Hehe!

Each one costs $40.00 with $8.95 shipping.
It's worth it though because every one comes with a certificate of authenticity personally signed by "Gunny" himself.

What a cool gift that would make!

Flash Gordon.

I even bought the soundtrack to the movie by Queen.  I had hoped to get the following dialogue into my wedding vows but the Mrs. vetoed it.

Priest:  "Do you, Ming the Merciless, ruler of the universe,
take this earthling, Dale Arden, to be your empress of the hour?"

 Ming: "Of the hour? Yes."

Priest: "Do you promise to use her as you will?"

 Ming: "Certainly!"

Priest: "Not to blast her into space? ... Until such time as you grow weary of her?"

 Ming: "I do."

 Dale: "I do not!"

That would be pretty funny, but I can see why your wife would have objected to those vows. They would have livened up the rehearsal though.

I did actually manage to slip a bit of sci-fi into my wedding.

My wife suggested that I pick out the music for our entrance to the reception, so I used the throne room fanfare from Star Wars. I bought the CD, took it over to the DJ's house (he's an old buddy), and we figured out that we just needed about the first 17 seconds of the piece when he announced us, fading out at the break between the fanfare and the main piece. It was quite effective, and as far as I know, only two people made the connection to Star Wars - basically the sort of guys who would have seen it more than a dozen times (guys like us). My cousin later told me that he really had to fight the urge to make a Wookie noise at the appropriate spot. Smartass.

Of course, now the ending of Star Wars has a special romantic significance for us. Now, if I could just find some way to do that with Smokey and the Bandit or Army of Darkness.

I just watched Wild Zero again tonight, introducing a relative newbie to the awesome rock and roll power that is Guitar Wolf.  And I must say, this movie pumps me up more than almost anything else.
