Title: I just bought my first DVD!
Post by: JohnL on February 26, 2004, 09:14:13 PM
I was in a local dollar store, Dollar Tree, and up next to the register there was a box full of DVD's, each shrinkwrapped in a cardboard sleeve. Most of them were 3-4 episodes of old TV shows like Ozzie & Harriet, some old B/W movies, some blaxploitation (I'm blanking on the titles), a couple kung fu films and some generic 1980's stuff that I'd never heard of. Then as I was flipping through the last stack I spotted a couple copies of one that looked like it had the mutant offspring of Mr. Potatohead on the cover. Pulling it out I discovered it was Creature! Klaus Kinski is listed on the front and the back has a capsule description of the movie, but no other credits or pictures from the film. There are no special features listed (others listed some) but I figured how wrong could I go for a buck?

I don't currently have a DVD player although I do have a new computer with a DVD drive, which I haven't set up yet (ned to make some room so I can keep both and network them together).

Anyone else seen these? The back says it's from Dollar DVD with an email address but no web site listed.

Your 1st DVD!?

Where have you been?

I bought my 1st DVD player & DVD's back in '99...5 years ago!

You'll like Creature...it's great!

John, I too bought my first DVD before I had a player.  It was "Five Fingers of Death."  Even after I had my player I didn't watch the damn thing for several years.  When I finally did, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Clinging to video tapes! :)

>I bought my 1st DVD player & DVD's back in '99...5 years ago!

I don't really buy movies, at least I haven't so far, so I didn't have a big need for a DVD player. I'm not really a big video renter either.

>You'll like Creature...it's great!

I know, I've seen it on cable back in the 80's. I even have a copy I recorded (if the tape is even still watchable) from one of the premium channels.

>John, I too bought my first DVD before I had a player.

Well, technically, I HAVE the player (DVD drive), it just isn't set up yet. I need to make room for the new system so that I can keep my current system as well.

I picked up a stack at my own Dollar Tree:
Karate Warriors
Triumph of Sherlock Holmes
Secret Weapon (another Sherlock Holmes)
TNT Jackson
Mr. Wong, Detective
Bail Out (Linda Blair/David Hasselhoff)
His Girl Friday
Dementia 13
The Terror

No Creature at my location, dang it.

Karate Warriors, TNT Jackson, and Bail Out  all billed themselves as being from Dollar DVD, with a URL on the back: dollar-dvd.com.  There's no website there now, but the domain is registered to the people behind Brentwood Home Video -- the people who put out those "10 movies on 5 DVDs" compilations.

Welcome to the wonderful world of buying a lot of movies.  At least, that is often the result I have seen when someone gets a DVD player.    Yours truly included.

There's a Dollar Tree here in the city I live in but I've never been to it.

I think I'm gonna have to check the place out and see what they got for movies!

Very true.  My dvd collection is starting to approach my cd collection in size, despite cds have about a ten year head start.  I'll only start worrying if it approaches my vinyl collection.

Turn back JohnL, turn back! I got a dvd player in May 2002, and bought 5 cheapo discs, must have 100 now. It's an addiction I tell you.

Then again it's nice to have "Master of the Flying Guillotine" and M*A*S*H episodes handy to watch anytime.

>Welcome to the wonderful world of buying a lot of movies. At least, that is often

Thanks. I doubt I'll go that wild, since I can't afford to buy that many DVD's. There are a few things that I definitely want to get, like the Firefly series, but for the most part, I don't see myself buying a ton of movies.

>i just bought a Phillips DVD recorder (for $200!!!!) so i am planning on renting

Most likely, it includes some kind of copy prevention which will prevent you from doing this. Hopefully not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did. I doubt that they would go to the trouble of putting Macrovision on DVD's (actually in the player itself), and then turn around and make a recorder that will make perfect copies.

>it's funny you mention that, this morning i saw on the news a bust on a dollar store
>for selling fake dvd's (pirated)

Did they give any details?

Ah, yes.  I still remeber my first DVDs.  I bought 2 the day I bought my DVD player (back in the days when there were only about 30 titles available).  My first 2 were:

* HOODLUM

* THE ARRIVAL

The rest, my friends, is history . . .

If it does try to do that-i can always record a DVD onto VHS, and then copy that VHS onto a DVD. I also have alot of old TV series on tape that i want to put on DVD. These include:

Titus
V-the series
Mamas' Family
Sledgehammer!
Superbowls 36 and 38

JohnL, I hate to tell you but everyone on here is right.  You will now be addicted to buying DVDs.  My first DVD was a fantastic copy of Vampire Hunter D in all of it's glory.  It was like crack!  I immediatly went out and started buying DVDs.  Now I have close to 200 or so.

Jayson, you actually can't copy from most DVDs to VHS.  Trust me, I've tried.  What happens is that when you start to record, the color begins to fade in and out.  The picture will go from normal to black then normal to black.  Some type of copyright prevention stuff.  As for copying DVDs w/ a DVDR, there are some ways around it.  There is a protection code on the DVD that can be found fairly easily.  Look around the net.  I promise you'll find something very useful.

Title: Not necessarily.
Post by: Nathan Shumate on March 02, 2004, 09:57:36 AM
I've had a DVD player for a couple of years, and I haven't gone on a hogwild buying spree; there are so few movies that I'll want to watch more than once, that I usually rent still.  ('Specially with those 2-for-1 Hollywood Video coupons.)

I usually only buy when I can't find it for rent, or when it's a kids' movie that my chilluns will watch forever.

(I've probably got about 70 or 80 DVDs, of which about fifty are screeners that were sent to me gratis.)

That's almost certainly caused by Macrovision. It doesn't work on all VCRs though. My friend has one that will make almost perfect copies of DVDs. On some, you can see the brightness change slightly every other minute or so, but it doesn't happen on all of them. The only real problem I noticed was that even if you're making a copy just for someone else to watch, you have to record it on SP as any other speed makes the picture jitter slightly, just enough to be annoying.

I purchased 12 movies on CD's in a local $1.00 store.  I noticed like you that the
E-Mail address on the cover of the "Napoleon" CD was info@dollar-dvd.com
and I tried to get a connection over the internet and like you......no connection.
Do you know of any other one dollar CD places to get the movies on the internet?  I looked at several but they are on E-bay......I'm not interested in bidding on them.  I am only interested in purchasing them right there and then at the one dollar each.
If the dollar stores can get them to sell for one dollar each, we should be abe to do just as well.  I am sure with the mark up..........the stores are paying something like 25 cents each.  When I worked for retail stores I was aware of the tripple mark up on things they purchased wholesale.  Even at half off they still made 100%.  If I get
any further news about getting the CD's for less (new) I will let you know.  Meanwhile lets keep looking.  Maybe you might get a connection before me.  Let me know.

I wonder if I have Pirated CD's.........I purchased them at a one dollar store.
On the  cover of the CD's there is a company listed.  I tried to get in contact
with them but was not able to.  I wanted to get a catalog if they had one of
the CD's they might be offereing for one dollar each.  Maybe you might be
aware of the company.........E-mail address is.........Info@dollar-dvd.com

Have you found any other internet places where CD's can be purchased
at the one dollar eac h?????    If you do let me know and I will keep you
       informed if I find out.

I have just purchased my first CD player.  It also records onto CD-RW
disk's.  I'm trying to figure out how to get more then 80 min. on the recording
       time.

                                              Keep in touch.......Jim

You mentioned about recording from VHS to CD and visa versa.....I just
purchased a machine that does this.  I am recording right off the TNand
making CD's of the movies.  I also ran a CD off and made a VHS from it.
    I purchased this from a company named.......TechnoScout.  I purchased
this for $499.00.......I am just learning how to operate it.  So far I did make
a movie onto a CD from television and I also made a recording onto a
CD from a VHS of a movie I liked.  I am sending you the eight hundred
number is case you might want to contact the company for a catalog.

                                        1-800-704-1210

The address for this company is..........TechnoScout
                                                                          1998 Ruffin Mill Road
                                                                          Colonial Heights, VA
                                                                          23834

I hope this might be of some insight and help to you.  Let me know what you
     think...............

I sent three messages so far trying to answer some of you.  Here is another
one.  I have played the one dollar CD's that I purchased at the one dollar
store.  They are playing great.  The quality is good on all of them so far.  The
   one's I have played are.........

The Last Man On Earth.........w/Vincent Price
A Farewell To Arms...............w/ Gary Cooper
     Fighting Caravans..................w/Gary Cooper
     The Terror.................................w/Boris Karloff
     This Is The Army.....................w/Ronald Reagan
     Blood On The Sun..................w/James Cagney

The rest of the one dollar CD's I have not played yet.  I collect movies.  I have
over 3500 recorded on VHS.....it takes up a lot of space.  So I am recording
    them........now..........onto CD's

I found a .99 cent store in LA, CA that sells DVD's for .99 cents.  From the classic tv shows, to the old time films, to the old time cartoons.  I'm talking old like from the 1930-40's to the 1970's...  You might want to check out your local .99 cent chain  store. Good Luck.... Or you can check out e-bay they have a lot of what you're looking for for just a couple more dollars...  James Butman wrote:

John, don't let 'em get to you.  I'm STILL DVD-free.  I use the computer to watch them, but no TV version.  I'm a late adopter of technology.  Plus, my wife and I have been on a huge no-debt trend for the last few years.  So I have a 13 inch computer monitor, no DVD, and outside of the house we don't owe a single soul a single cent.
I think I'll take that trade anytime.
Um, by the way if anyone has a flat screen LCD monitor they want to get rid of let me know, but QUIETLY :o).

On the plus side I keep coming across video stores selling their old VHS tapes for dirt cheap. I've picked up tons of cinematic gold for next to nothing. They got a copy of Zardoz and Bronx Warriors on the buy 2 get 1 free table at the video store just down the street, but I'm not sure if I have the stamina to handle Sean Connery in a woman's bathing suit for 90 minutes.

This weekend I was in a Party Dollar Store and saw the same DVD's for 99 cents so I bought 8 of them to give away at Christmas time.  I thought, 'what a great price for a cheap stocking stuffer'.  I also noticed there was an email address and it looked like there should be a  website since the email address had .com at the end, but I haven't been able to find it.  In fact,  when I was searching for the website, that was how I saw your message.  I wish I could find more of them for that price but I do think they are mostly 'B' movies although the old tv show ones are cool.

Howdy DMeeks,I have found the dollar DVDs at some of the following places:Dollar Discount: They have had single titles such as 'The Undertaker and His Pals', 'Fangs of the Living Dead' and some cool double-features such as Film Noir; Whistle Stop/Detour and War Movies; A Walk in the Sun/Go for Broke among others.Dollar Tree has mostly had single features and TV shows.Wal-mart has some dollar DVDs in slim snap cases that they usually keep by the registers or in video dump bins, where they usually put the budget DVDs. The brand on these is Digiview and are pretty good quality. They have a copy of 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' in this line and the image quality is excellent. If you have kids or like cartoons yourself they have a boatload of cartoon DVDs in this line including Betty Boop, Bugs Bunny, and an animated Animal Farm.If you have a Target store in your area, they have been carrying dollar DVDs as well, although many of the same titles you may have already seen at the dollar stores. Their best selection was this past halloween when they had some double-feature dollar DVDs including The Giant Gila Monster/Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter and Nosferatu/Phantom of the Opera. The concept of online dollar DVDs runs into the problem of shipping costs making it no deal. Amazon.com does have a used/new section on each listing page where you can buy DVDs and VHS used and new from other sellers and can sometimes find quite a bargain. The shipping for each item from these sellers starts at $2.49 per item and there are no quantity shipping discounts even if all the DVDs came from the same seller.Dollar-DVDs does have a website; it is not the address listed on the package anymore but you may be able to find them with a google search. They only sell in bulk quantities.By the way, the double-feature DVDs from Target and Dollar Discount came from the same company which is PC Treasures Inc.Good HuntingBob

I think they are fine for one dollar. Those who are born in the 80's obviously will not know what true classics are. Those born in the 90's won't either. But some of us folk that are 24 and up will know what classics are. The writing on some of them is wrong and the fact that some of them are color and they are not is ok by me. Who cares! they are collectibles anyhow. It is sad that cassettes are not being made any more and it is sad that vcr's are becoming scarce. Have fun with these. they are pretty cool for a buck! I have collected them all! Cool for kids too! Beats the new crap cartoons they have on tv now. Not American anymore on tv!!!!! Shame!

Wow, I just love the cheesy horror dollar dvd's.  I am always looking through stacks of cheap dvd's to find the cheesy horror ones.  So far I have been able to find dollar dvd's @ Wal-Mart, Factory Card Outlet-yes! I actually found one entitled "Santa Clause saves Christmas from the Martians".  It was filmed in 1964 and Pia Zadora stars as the little girl martian-it is so pathetic and hilarious with the awful special effects! Any dollar store, even Walgreens is a good place to check every now and then. Another one that makes me laugh is "Bela Lugosi meets a Brooklyn gorilla".  Takes place in the jungle where Bela lives in a castle (cuz we all know that castles are in the jungle).  The pretend native language is hysterical in itself and they actually have the jall to put 2 characters in it that are obviously imitating Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis-and quite badly I might add.  Parts are just so ridiculous, like the fact that thenatives only eat bananas, that they show giraffes and lions running-cuz they live in the jungle too!  Anyway, wish I could find some online, happy hunting.

In my search for $ dvd's, I found the e-mail address for Empire DVD's that produce the $ dvd's for the Family Dollar Stores. The address is info@dvdempire.com. The only problem getting the $ dvd's for a dollar is purchasing enough dvd's to make it worth their while to sell them at a reduced rate! I'm sure the Family Dollar Stores buy 1,000's at a time. If you really want to buy $ dvd's you will have to form a group of buyers, with enough $'s, to buy the way Family Dollar does. You will need a negotiator to contact Empire DVD's, that is experienced enough, to get the titles you want at the price you want. Keep in mind, Empire may only have certain dvd's that they are willing to release for a $ each and only on a cntract basis. Also, keep in mind, these dvd's may be older releases and second or third rate movies that may have been legends in their time! If your negotiator is good, they may be able to get Empire to include or update some dvd's to 1st. class releases!! Whatever you choose to do, good luck with your endeavor.

                                                                   Sincerely,
                                                                               Bill

Is this a weird coincidence or what?

Somebody browsing the board decides to post to an old topic of JohnL's while we have a thread going about him.
