Title: Your Personal Weapon Of Choice
Post by: Ash on March 29, 2004, 04:18:04 AM
I absolutely love the movie "Kill Bill" and in it, many characters have their personal weapon of choice.
Roger Ebert said it best in his review of that film...he says:

"Before she arrives in Tokyo, The Bride stops off to obtain a sword from Hattori Hanzo ("special guest star" Sonny Chiba). He has been retired for years, and is done with killing. But she persuades him, and he manufactures a sword that does not inspire his modesty: "This my finest sword. If in your journey you should encounter God, God will be cut."

Later the sword must face the skill of Go Go Yubari (Chiaki Kuriyama), O-Ren's teenage bodyguard and perhaps a major in medieval studies, since her weapon of choice is the mace and chain. This is in the comic book tradition by which characters are defined by their weapons."

A personal weapon of choice, if thrust into that type of situation where one would need to choose one, says a lot about a person.

I am curious to know what your personal weapon of choice would be assuming you had the proper training to wield it.
Whether it be a type of firearm or a hand to hand weapon such as a sword or even a large weapon such as artillery, what would you choose?

Why would you choose it and more importantly, would its selection reflect upon your personality?
If so, how?

For firearms, I have always loved flamethrowers

BTW you forgot to mention your own :)

I've always liked that nuke-shooting bazooka from Starship Troopers.  What does that say about my personality?  I guess that I'm not a very detail-oriented person.

Sock full of quarters.  Or, should the situation escalate, a sack full of oranges.  Won't leave a bruise.

For me it would be either a samurai sword, a sawed-off shotgun or a semi-automatic gun. I don't know if it's defining of my personality (multiple?) or just that i recently saw "The Yakuza" (1975), where all this weapons are used in a great climatic scene.

It would depend on the situation but I am a firm believer in 'peace through superior firepower'...
A 12 gauge pump would fit nicely into many situations. I think, however, if I had to pick a one-size-fits-all for that zombie attack or maybe to wipe out invading space aliens, I would most likely pick the good old, reliable AK-47. Compliment that with a reliable Glock or Sig in .40 cal and you're good to go.

Except for my pocketknife, which I ALWAYS carry, when I carry a weapon, it's a 9mm semi auto.  I'm proficient with it after much training (and fairly confident, the MOST important thing in self defense).

I have used my 12 ga. to chat with someone on my front yard that I did not know.

As for fantasy weapons?  I like the A-10 Warthog.

A little off topic here but what kind of 9 do you have?

It seems that Neville and I have similiar taste in weapons. For me, it is three as well. A sawed off, pump action shotgun w/ pistol grip and loaded with double ought buck.

Also a boot knife. "Always trust the man who is smart enough to carry a knife in his boot."

And a gatling gun. "Get out of my way. I'm goin' to crank this baby up and let it rip!"

Cool. I was just curious as to what you owned. Among my guns I have a mid 90's stainless IMI Baby Eagle in 9mm. Very similar to a CZ also.

I also have 3 .357 magnums (okay, one of them is my wife's), but I don't carry those.  I had a chance to get  a deep discount on a Sigma .40 a couple of years ago, and regret not doing it now.  I kind of like them.  IF I do get another handgun, it probably will be a .40.

Still holdin out for that A-10, tho.    ;)

The new CZ in .45 acp. Sure the rounds are heaver (Even 180 grainers), but that puppy plays rough, for sure.
H&K MP-5 in .40. The Rolls Royce of SMGs.
Rifle: Gallil in 7.62. With scout scope.

Fantasy: Starfleet issue type2 Phaser. ( ST3 version). It stuns, its kills and leaves the animal intact, and it vaporises zombies compleatly...whats not to love?

Nope.  I was expecting a fun, somewhat light-hearted Shaw Bros. / Beat Takeshi tribute, and what I ended up watching was unpleasant, brutal and devoid of humor, except for a few sleazy touches I'm sure Tarantino found amusing.

As for my weapon of choice, in terms of close-range combat I'd have to go with a good beating stick.  Nothing fancy.  For those pesky opponents who will not square with me and my beating stick, I've always had a fondness for railguns.

Max Gardner, unpleasant, brutal and sleazy IS humor to some of us ;)
As for a favorite weapon, in the gun category it'd have to be the mini-gun that Jesse Ventura has in Predator.  The idea of being able to turn a whole roomful of idiots into a fine mist of blood in about 10 seconds thrills me to no end.
As for blades, the crazy flying guillotine on the chain that GoGo has in Kill Bill.  I'd love to be able to use one of those things.

Most likely a revolver, perhaps a colt. Isn't the most powerful handgun a revolver, because sometimes when I play a video game I want to kill an enemy quickly and without pain and I think this type of handgun can do it.

I guess for close combat I would use a big war hammer ( like the guy from Conan the Barbarian) Because I would like to bash a orcs head in. Heh heh.

Sword:  Samurai (because I'm studying Aikido).
Shotgun:  Streetsweeper, but they don't allow them anymore.
I'm also partial to the old Winchesters, there's something fun about the lever action.
For a personal sidearm, I've got a nice little .380, it fits my hand better that the big grip on my .357 (I do need to get that changed).

Don't know what kind of grips you have on that .357 Mag, but we put Hogue grips on my wife's .357.  They are nice; semi soft rubber.  I tend to load hot max loads for .357, and these grips DO make a difference in comfort.

From what I've read, even if you could carry the gun itself, you also need a huge powerplant to run it and the ammo itself would be something like 100 pounds. They did show these omissions in the movie.

I'm well aware it's not exactly practical.  This is a fantasy weapon post after all.  But I dare anyone to argue with its coolness.
Hell, if the details are such a problem, here's my solution.  I'll have two midget slaves follow me with it, one pulling a small diesel generator on a rickshaw, the other pulling a trailer that feeds the gun ammo through a huge belt.

Mine came with the wooden grips (it's a retired cop gun.)  If I weren't so damn lazy, I'd get the new grips.  It's got a six inch barrel, so it wouldn't be my first choice to carry concealed.

Hell, just get me John Wayne's guns then.  They never run out of ammo, and they do a bang up job of dispatching the opposition.

Ulthar...
My collection consists of the Baby Eagle as mentioned earlier, 1960 Walther P-38 9mm, S&W .357, replica 1860 Colt black powder, Remington 870 12 gauge, Ruger Mini-14 in .223, SKS carbine, 1944 Turkish Mauser, and assorted .22s. I find the most fun, however, is with the Baby Eagle and either the Mini or the SKS. I like being able to shoot "fun" ammo fairly cheap and I'm sure you'll agree with that on the 9mm. Where are you at anyway? I'm in PA, still a gun friendly state.

Raj...
Ulthar is correct about Hogue grips. I used to have a Colt Anaconda in .44 and the grips were ludicrous. I bought a set of Hogue and they were probably about 75% of the size of the originals but fit my hand great. You might want to look into getting a set. I highly recommend them.

Finally, Brother R...
You sir, are correct. Nobody can argue with the coolness of the mini-gun. What I wouldn't give to have one of them. Well, one of them and the 2 midgets to help me with it.

For me just a good old fashiond Fire Axe simple and brutal with that nasty spike on the back, you have to get in close :) As for a gun, I'd go with a grenade launcher like the one arnold uses in T2 that shoots the gas grenades, but mine would have proper destructive ones.

"Fun" shooting is just that, fun.  Boy, we have burned up many a brick of .22 longs with the 10/22.  The 9mm is a blast, especially double-taps and 'rapid fire.'  I load my own, so ammo is generally cheaper than storebought (and generally more accurate, too).

I even have a set of dies for the SKS, but you have to be careful which primers you use with that one, or she'll go 'full auto' on you (actually a slam fire due to over sensitive primers..once it starts, there's no way to stop it  ;)   )

I'm in SC these days.  FWIW, I'll only live in 'gun friendly' states.  ;)

Well, my weapon of choice has two parts...

The first is my swearing. According to some, swearing means you are backward, and this will lure my foes into a false sense of security and leaving them open to the second part...

My body. Martial arts is a much more graceful way of defending yourself than unsubtly waving a gun at your foe. Fear the man who stares at your gun with a slight grin on his face.

But let's say I had no choice BUT to use a vulgar display of power, maybe perhaps one of those wonderful Weirding Guns from Dune?

No, fear the man who holds something capable of vaporizing an entire room in seconds and  isn't stupid enough to give you the time to smirk and kick the gun out of his hand  :)

Alright, seeing as subtlty is laughed at and looked down on, how about this...

The Chaostructor, from the 2000 AD comic strip "Zenith"

"A weapon of awesome power, it opens a dimensional to the Chao-ethoric, a dimension that is home to the primordial Chaos that existed everywhere before the birth of the Universe.

Once this dimensional gateway is opened, it cannot be closed. The Chao-etheric explodes into this dimension and erases it...forever. Not exacly subtle, but it'll do the job.

Now, are you completely sure you want to operate this hing manually?"

Raj : Agree on the after market grips.
I had wood grips on my .357 Ruger Service six. Too small, and the recoil was rough. A change to Pacmar did the trick.

I have a 44 Moisan-Nagant , a ,303 Lee-Enfield MK3*, a Ruger 10/22 and MK2 pistol, a Ruger .357, and a Mossberg 88  12 gage with a Turkey choke.
But i'd also like....an M-1 Garand, M-1 Carbine, Mauser98k, and an 03 Springfield. Better end the list of "Wanna haves there."....ain't got all day!

Flange,
M1 carbine is real fun to shoot.  Mine's circa WWII, so it shoots a bit low & to the right.  The trick comes when you should the thing one handed.  Easy enough to do, but not so easy to hit the target.

Already endorsed by others, but I'll add my support for Hogue grips. I bought a Hogue Monogrip for my S&W 586 I bought used years ago. It had some ugly and uncomfortable synthetic fake wood grips with cute deep finger grooves that made it hard get a positive grip in a hurry. Also whoever had the gun before had cut or broke the top part of the left grip off to make speedloaders easier to use. The Hogue grip is great - easy to find a firm and comfortable grip in a hurry, just soft enough to have some give and cushioning (especially after your hand warmth passes to it), no problem with speedloaders, etc.

Weapons of choice:

Sawed off pool cue, katana, Sikes-Fairbain British Commando Knife, Browning Hi-Power 9mm (durable, tough, easy to find ammo) Kalashnikov/AK of some type (same reasons), Winchester 1897 12 gauge (you can hold back the trigger and fire shots as fast as you can work the slide in emergencies on the early models, apparently the same feature has been retained on those new Norico made copies for the cowboy action shooting market.).

Fantasy WOC:
Whatever the uber-weapon Gary Oldman was dealing in "The Fifth Element", kind of covered all bases in a compact package.

I'm a bit surprised noone has mentioned that gadget from "Orgazmo."  That could come in, er, handy.

On the subject of knives and collections and such, my nephew collects knives.  A few years ago, my wife and I spotted an ad in a magazine for a limited edition, beautifully engraved Bowie knife.  There were to be (iirc) 1500 numbered ones made.  We thought "that'd make a good present."  So we ordered it.

When it arrived, we just HAD to look at it before wrapping it up.  Imagine our joy and surprise to learn WE GOT #1!!  That was soooo coooool.  #1 of 1500.

(Now, don't any of you guys now say, "yeah, I got #1 also"  "yeah, so did I" ... )

I was a bit reluctant to admit this, but since this post has derived into phantasy world by now, here it goes: My personal weapon of choice is the cauliflower bazooka I saw in a recent "A-Team" re-run. A katana can slice a person into two, a sniper rifle can kill you from half a mile away, a sawed-off shotgun is cool, but you can beat a cauliflower bazooka. Not only it knocks out enemies at close range, it is also environment-friendly.

After a egghead walked up to my truck and shot me 3 times at point blank range with a 12 gauge pump with oo Buckshot  4 weeks ago i would have to say I like a 686 357 magnum it shoots through windows well and you dont have to worry about the safety being on ,yes you can get shot  3 times at point blank range and still live IF JESUS shields you and he did he shot me in the face ,right arm ,chest ,and back shoulder , i found that using a auto pistol to protect yourself in a real life battle at close range takes some practice. Oh by the way your probaly wondering about him well hes DEAD .

Actually, many many people walked out when my brother-in-law went to see it.   I like a good movie, but I do not understand Q.T's use of ultra-violence as some form of an artistic statement.  It just gets in the way  of some decent cinematic storytelling.   He makes good movies, the sprays blood all over them.  I just do not get it.
But back to the weapon of choice... Mine is a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs or buckshot, AND a bayonet mount, just for those times when you run out of ammo.
Also the Quake I nail gun is my favorite video-game related weapon.

Well, here in the UK firearms aren't really an option unless you want to get arrested or something.

Personally an AK-47 is very good, despite the fact it goes up and to the right occasionaly.

As for Kill Bill, I haven't seen it and probably won't until both Kill Bill 1 & 2 are out on DVD / in the Cinema, I just don't see why I should bow to corporate american movie making philosophy of squeezing as much money out of a franchise as possible.

I also have the fear that most of the stuff in Kill Bill I've probably seen before - mainly because I grew up watching (and enjoying) kung fu movies.  Which is probably why I can't seem to stand drama movies or any other movie other than good action movies.

Are non-existant weapons allowed? If so, I'd choose the Glaive, also known as the Krullux, from the movie "Krull". That's been just about my favourite weapon of all time. If only existing weapons are allowed, I'd have to say the bullwhip, which I know how to use fairly well. I've never used it as a weapon, though.
