Title: What was your first...?
Post by: loyal1 on July 21, 2004, 05:45:37 PM
I had a conversation the other day with a few friends and we started to talk about some of the old horror or sci fi flicks we saw as a kid and will never forget.  My first "horror" movie was Poltergeist, and it made me want to become a parapsychologist at the age of 7...didn't do much for my social life..haha!  Another that really affected me and I had nightmares over was The Shining (around the same age).

What was your first?

Probably my first  (don't quite remember) was Ben.  Saw that in a double bill with Krakatoa at a drive-in in '71 or thereabouts.  May have been a triple bill because I remember also seeing Oliver around the same time.

My first one was Poltergeist as well... but I was only 4, so it scared the #$&@ out of me.   I slept with my light on for, like, 3 years after that.

I saw it again recently and wondered how a movie that cheezy could have freaked me out so badly.

Haha...I remeber not going near a tree at night for some time, and was freaked out by the guy tearing off his face...totally cheezy stuff.  But giveyourself credit, you were only 4!! :)

"It:  The Terror From Beyond Space" -- later remade by Ridley Scott as "Alien" --
I saw it one Saturday afternoon with my Dad on our old black-and-white.  For some reason the picture was coming in particularly well that day -- must've been a storm coming.  I was probably 6 or 7.  Even though it was broad daylight it scared me to death.
I'll never forget the "It" tearing through the steel doors of the spaceship as if it was paper (because it was . . . well, paper . . .).

Oh man- that scene was the worst for me!   I guess it is understandable considering my age, but you know how it is.  Nobody wants to be the woos.

The first horror movie i can remember watching was ZAAT.  I was probably 3 or 4, it was on late nite tv. Thankfully people here directed me to that movie, i always remembered certain scenes but couldn't recollect the movie title.

My first official SCARY horror movie was "Poltergeist", then "Creepshow" which i was 8 or so.  Before that my only exposure to horror was whatever came on tv. I had seen hitchcock films like "the Birds" as we owned them but never deemed them gore horror..they were classic horrors.

We rented movies, there was the occasional hand covering my eyes by my mother who was more horrified to see it than me. Apparently "An American Werewolf in London"  was deemed too sexual after he met up with the nurse and it was turned off. (apparently they thought sex would lead to my ruination moreso than violence) I remember laying in my bed later that nite listening with my ear to the door as my parents watched, and heard the howl and the gnashing and screaming and swore to all the gods i would see that movie someday..lol

Apparently my mother realized at age 9 she could'n't stop my passion for horror. I began watching ever horror movie i could get my hands on when we rented movies each weekend. While the other kids were perusing the Disney aisle and grabbing My Electric Grandmother, i've got "the Texas Chainsaw massacre" in my hands. I guess she figured it was a phase I'd get over. She'd let me pick out any title i wanted and i devoured the entire horror genre of the video store, leaving no title untouched from I spit on your Grave to Hellraiser to The Bad Seed.

I love her for that.

I don't really remember my first horror movie because I used to watch a lot of them on TV when I was a kid.  However, I do remember that the first horror movies I saw in a movie theater were HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS and the original WILLARD.

I don't remember my first horror movie either. I used to watch them on Saturday afternoons, on the afternoon movies during the week, etc.

Do you remember the first horror or Sci Fi that really affected you...blew you away...the first one that made you a fan and want more?  that is what I truly meant by the question.  The shinning affected me deeply...I had nightmares of Jack Nicholson for some time after that...and the twins "Come and play with us Leila (my real name :0)

Oddly enough 2001: A Space Oddesy was the first Sci Fi I remember...yet I only remember being entranced by it, but not really understanding it.  My mom thought it was weird I could sit through it so young, but then she made fun of me for being a Doctor Who fan at a young age...lol

OH, speaking of robot/computer villians...does anyone remember a the name of the movie where the house takes over???  I remember the computer making the kitchen so hot that an egg fried on the counter...only remember bits and pieces really...but would love to check it out again.

That would be Demon Seed.

I can't remember a specific one but it would have been on Chiller Theater on Saturday afternoon when I was a kid. I was probably hiding behind the couch. I do remember the original The Thing scaring the hell out of me.

I think the first movie that got me into B-flicks was "Godzilla 1985."  My first true horror movie was probably "Jaws."
I used to rent a lot of b-movies back when I was little because most of them weren't rated, or weren't rated properly, so I saw a lot of stuff that most little kids wouldn't have simply because I rented anything with a monster on the cover.

Early TV exposure from the Sunday morning movies on the local ABC station: "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster" and "The Blob". My dad used to alternate watching these old horror flicks and "Face the Nation" before we went to church. So I knew who Godzilla and Moshe Dayan were from an early age,

First "horror" type film I saw at the theater: "Orca". My mom took me to see it when I was about four, still remember the whale collapesing the house on stilts to get to chomp on Bo Derek's leg, and Charlotte Rampling being the only survivor on the iceberg after the whale killed Richard Harris and Will Sampson. Wasn't until I saw it years later, much older that I realized what a bad movie it was.

First films to "affect" me and make me want more: the Corman/Poe films when they turned up on late night TV on CBS. I've mentioned how the ending of "Pit and the Pendulum" was cut off (too many unintended puns on my part lately) and stuck with me for years wanting to see how it ended in other threads. But "Tales of Terror" and the psuedo-Poe film "The Terror" were all early films that made me want to see more.

I also remember seeing "Octaman" with my dad one afternoon not long after we first got cable. But we both spent so much time laughing at how goofy the creature looked that we drove others in my extended family crazy talking about how silly it was.

a horrible film called " Mausolelum" i was about 10 maybe,  and by that time i thought it was a great film and very scary, anyway, its good to grow up, time gives u  a different  perspective of what it means " great film" and " scary"

The first one that I can remember is a movie called Phantasm.   I was about  six I believe and I remeber the little silver flying ball cutting off someones ear or something like that.
We had a very long hall in our house and I remember at night when I needed to go to the bathroom, I would cover my ears and run down the hall as fast as I could scared that  the ball was going to attack me.

My first: "The Fly" The original, Not the remake. My mother acutally took me and my younger sister to see it, when it was first released into the theaters.

Kinda reminds me of a 70's horror film "Demon Seed." You might want to check that one out.

The first one I can remember was Stephen King's IT. Wasn't Tim Curry Pennywise? Anyway..

I say the first one I remember because my dad was an avid horror movie watcher, and he told me that I stared at the TV screen while he watched A Nightmare on Elm Street.

(BTW-- Freddy Krueger is awesome, and he could kick Jason's ass anyday. =P)

Yup, Pennywise was Tim Curry "Yes, they all float down here.."  Talk about the creepiest clown ever!

Tim Curry gave me the willies as the desk clerk in Home Alone 2. But only because he was an adult chasing after a kid.

I can only think of Michael Jackson.

(Random fact; When I  was little, I saw a commercial for a Jackson 5 CD. I raced to my mom, pulled her into the room, and yelled, "Look, mom! Michael Jackson used to be black!")

Tim curry is an awsome character actor -Now he had a skit on one of the Tales from The Crypt episodes that was downright nasty where he played all the characters of a redneck family.

But I always liked him as the Lord of Darkness in "legend". He was very scary as Pennywise. Then again so were the Killer Klowns from Outer space....clowns are just evil

Do you remember the worst Tim Curry role ever...I still can't get the bad graphics in the background when he danced and sung...it was so bad that it was hilarious.

Did you ever see the Worst Witch...lol

there are many horror films that stand out in my mind. but throughout the years i've watched a lot, and i mean A LOT. i've seen horror films in chinese, japanese, spanish, practically any kind of quality or nationality i could get my hands on. but as far as the most impressionable, here's a few:

1. Dawn of the Dead (original)
2. Henry: Portrait of Serial Killer-i first saw this in high school, and i had to walk out during one scene. it's truly a disturbing film. great acting and a low-budget just adds to it's creepyness.
3. Squirm-not quite a high quality film, but seeing people get eaten by worms just makes me feel so fuzzy inside.
4. the Brood-classic David Cronenberg. the costumes are horrible, but it was the 70's. very intelligent and psychological horror.
5. I can't think of one for my 5th entry so I'll just say Day of the Dead to be monotonous.

One of my earliest memories is of watching Evil Dead 2, Im not sure if It was the first I saw (I had older brothers that would let me watch movies with them when I was three y/o), For years I had the scene where Ash has to cut his hand off floating around in my head, but it never gave me nightmares. I think this is probabaly responsible for my lifelong love of horror/ B grade movies.

I was 6 years old (1961) and I somehow convinced my parents to let me go with a group of neighbor kids to see a vampire movie. I think I lasted 15 minutes until I got so scared one of the older kids had to take me home.
I think the one that hooked me was a repeat of "The Black Cat" (1934) on I caught on TV in the late 60s.

I don't recall my first horror movie, as I pretty much grew up watching "Creature Feature," "Shock Theatre" and other stuff, as well as watching "Twilight Zone" (reruns) and "ST:TOS" (reruns) with my Dad.  I watched A LOT of horror on TV, and loved the old black and white classics (The Mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula, etc).  I know my interest in horror movies predates 4th grade.

But, I think the first horror movie I went out of my way to see at the theatre was "Friday the 13th Part II" or "Halloween II" (I don't recall which I saw first).  I remember seeing a sort of 'horror' movie called "Sasquatch" in the theatre when I was considerably younger, but I think if was probably more action/adventure with suspense thrown in.
