Title: New Willy Wonka
Post by: Brit on July 23, 2004, 04:42:16 PM
Has anyone heard about the new willy wonka movie where Johnny Depp is playing ol' Willy. nothing aginst JD but I don't think he can pull it off in that movie.

Also, does anyone know who the director is?

I think Tim Burton is doing it.  I think Depp is perfect for it.  I remember there were rumors a year or so ago about Marlyn Manson playing Willie, I much prefer depp.

Yeah, Burton is directing.  Recent news had a very expensive camera fall into a vat of chocolate.  Kinda funny really.

I hope it will be very wacky and surreal and maybe even a bit dark.  That would be quite good...

Depp can pull it off :).

I think it's safe to say that if Burton has anything to do with it, it will be a bit dark :)

If Burton is directing...I think JD will be perfect for the role and Burton's style...I look forward to it.  I wonder what the umpa loompas will look like!  :0)

It makes you wonder how many hippies will take a hit of acid before going into the theater to watch this.
I can imagine that it would be pretty trippy with Depp starring and Burton directing.

I will definitely be going to see this.

I heard that they are going to use one little person and duplicate him over and over so that all of the oompa loompas look the same.  Way back when Manson was cast for wonka, rumors said that the oompas would be demonish, but I think that's no longer true.

Something that would be even better than Burton directing a remake:

Todd McFarlane making twisted action figures of Willy Wonka and stuff. Look what he did with the Wizard of Oz: Twisted Land of Oz. Dorothy's getting branded by a munchkin while blindfolded and tied up nude.

=D

Hey, am I the only one who remembers the original film with reverence?!?!?!  What could top the image of Jack Albertson's Grandpa Joe popping out of bed after some 20 years to the tune of Golden Ticket ("I never thought my life would be/Anything but catastrophe/But suddenly I begin to see/A bit of good luck for me")?  Or can Depp pull off the first view we had of Gene Wilder limping slowly out of the factory, leaning on his cane painfully, said cane getting stuck in a chink in the walkway, Wilder stopping, squeezing the canehead which is no longer there, and then pitching forward seemingly onto his face but then into a graceful forward roll up onto his feet in front of the gates, off comes the hat in a showman's flourish.
I just hope it doesn't turn into the poopstew that The Grinch became.  I saw 20 minutes of Ron Howard's live action remake and had to yank it out of the VCR machine, then gargle with Windex to get rid of the taste.
I  wish Tim Burton good luck.

One thing that always bothered me about the original was the fact that the candy shop owner sang a song and tossed out tons of free candy to all the kids while Charlie watched through the store window. (if Charlie was so hungry, why didn't he get his ass in there for a free handout?)
But when Charlie finds that dollar in the sewer and goes into the candy shop, the shopkeeper charges him for the candy!

He even says, "AHEM!" and holds out his hand for the money.
What a prick!

And what about the grandparents lying in bed for over 20 years!?
My God that would stink!
Laying in their own p**s & s**t for God knows how long before Charlie or his mother cleaned it up.
Sick.

Also, go HERE (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067992/board/thread/6776143) to read a truly hilarious reason as to why Grandpa Joe is a vile and evil man.

I think Depp will be brilliant as Willy Wonka.  However, I suspect that Tim Burton may make the movie too "dark" and take all the fun out of it.

There were a LOT of dark undertones in the first one too.  The boat scene is a perfect example.

Burton's Big Fish and Edward Scissorhands wasn't so dark I thought...lots of imagination in a haunted childlike way..bright in some areas.  I think the film perfect for his style.  Willy Wonka was not all bright in fun in the original either.

1. Stop the remakes!
2. Who could possibly top the original Veruca Salt?
3. Depp is a god cast for this movie, but I liked the original enough that I don't think i'd pay to see a remake.

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing!!!!

The question is with Burton at the helm will this be a movie for kids, for adults, will it be a musical?  Burton will try too hard to make it dark. The great thing about the original is on the surface it looked innocent, candy and children and songs and music. But there was a very dark undertone that made it feel far more creepier

When I heard Depp would play Wonka, I immediately felt good about this movie. Of the current crop of actors, he's the one who can pull it off. He has a knack for playing eccentrics.

Title: Re: New Willy Wonka
Post by: nobody on July 26, 2004, 02:25:15 PM
If anyone can pull off a remake of such a great, classic movie, it's Tim Burton. And if anyone can hope to hold a candle to Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka it's Johnny Depp, who I think is the greatest actor of our time. The guy can play anything!

However, I won't be walking into the theaters expecting pure gold. There's a chance this movie could go horribly, horribly wrong. Tim's movies haven't been all that great lately (except for "Big Fish"). He could end up turning "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" into another "Planet of the Apes."

Title: Re: New Willy Wonka
Post by: AndyC on July 26, 2004, 04:45:33 PM
Agreed that Planet of the Apes went awry, but it wasn't really a good fit for Burton. A big-budget sci-fi action remake just doesn't seem Burtonesque to me.

Now, a surreal movie set in a candy factory, full of magic and wonder, yet subtly menacing - that has Burton written all over it. I mean, there is some concern here that he'll make it too dark, but I don't think so. I think Burton understands what made the original great. If anybody appreciates the fun of wrapping the dark and sinister in a magical candy coating, he does.

Likewise, a stylish character who is loopy and lovable, with a hint of cruelty, is a role perfectly suited to Depp.

I can see Depp, but Wilder had that perfect look. The eyes of a possably...possably...very calmly mad man.

depp in the role, he's very commercially appealing right now after Pirates movie. You know the studio is going to try and meddle as much as possible in the production.

I keep imagining they're going to dress Depp up like Vlad in dracula

Yes...that was how I pretty much imagined Depp looking in the new film.

I envisioned him with the traditional purple suit like in the original but I have a feeling Burton will change that.

What color do you think Wonka's suit will be?

Title: Re: New Willy Wonka
Post by: Susan on July 26, 2004, 07:21:55 PM
maybe he'll wear a dress. What could be creepier than a grown man wanting a select few children to come to his house and take candy from him while wearing his mothers dress. Norman bates meets michael jackson.

Seirously who knows. Maybe an irredescent suit, shiny colors that change in different lights. The sort of look like the villian in Unbreakable. The problem is - who is thim targeted at? the original was clearly for kids, even tho years later some of us are still in therapy while others drop acid while viewing it. The target audience means everything in the type of film he decides to make it.

Well put.
It's a fun kids' movie, but when you see it again it's creepy from the grandparents to Willie.

Will Gene Wilder have any role in this?

Johnny Depp is a great pick for that role, but you can't remake something that still works like the original. In fact it would be a waste of time to remake it. It just dosn't make sense. That's my two cents.

Wonka never had a "mincing paedophile angle." If anything he showed nothing but distain for the children, disappointed in how disgusting and uncivilized they all were.

Post by: Vermin Boy on July 31, 2004, 12:26:19 PM
That's actually a really good question; it'd be really interesting if Burton ignored the original movie and simply tried a new adaptation of the book. I seem to remember a lot of stuff in the book that wasn't in the movie, though I may be confusing it with bits of the sequel.

omg you gotta be kidding me JD is gonna be the best wonka ever! did you see his personality in POTC?????? OMG remember wonka as a kinda silly kinda drunk looking guy kinda cruel but lovable and a mystery...he didnt care about the kids being sucked into the tubes but he cared about how he had to clean them! dude if they remake this burton style it will be dark dementid and funny and i think JD is gonna bring the true feeling out of Wonka Himself.

I'm not so sure about Johnny Depp being a great Willy Wonka, as no one could ever top Gene Wilder's "calm mad-man" effect, but I bet it'll still be good. There'll be lots of new things and the movie was pretty dark to begin with...

"Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing?

...yeah that's pretty dark. And also

"The suspense is terrible. I hope it lasts."

It'll be different, that's for sure...

"It's a fun kids' movie, but when you see it again it's creepy from the grandparents to Willie."

The original version showed a chicken getting its head cut off!  You think the ASPCA is going to let Burton get away with something like that?  Flightless birds consider the Wilder version a snuff film.

Title: Re: New Willy Wonka
Post by: BobSagatsBleedingDemocracy on September 08, 2004, 08:07:21 AM
There is no possible way the remake can top the original. Period.

Gene Wilder is a god. Depp is good, but he just can't compete. I mean, look at Young Frankenstein and Haunted Honeymoon for example - Gene Wilder Gold. The summersault performed at the entrance to the factory was Gene's idea!  Maybe if Depp was 15 years older...and related to Gene....
Plus, they won't have Roy Kinnear! Mr. Salt! He's dead!

I think I read somewhere, correct me if I am wrong, that Burton had never seen the original movie. He read Dahl's book, then saw the movie, and he was actually surprised by how dark it was in comparison to the book.
Mel Stuart even didn't let most of the cast see the Waterfall Room until they actually shot it - brilliant.

Let's just hope that they don't kill the original.

Does anyone realize that this was a book before it was a crappy movie in the 1970s?  The movie is based on the wonderful book-NOT a remake of the horrible movie which chagned the whole story around to make Wonka come off as a lying bastard.  Read the book: the story is so much more creative and never needed to be changed!

Oh, I think he can act. Actually, I think he is one of the best actors out there. As he seems to entirely recreate himself, every time he appears in a new film.

As a practice, I don't watch remakes. But, I was going to make an exception for this, if only because, when Johnny Depp gets together with Tim Burton, they make such interesting films.

Then last night, when I was at the theater, watching Vin Diesel in "The Pacifier," I saw the trailer for "Willy Wonka." After that, I'm going to be sure to see "Willy Wonka" now.

Can anyone honestly say that Johnny Depp is not the perfect person to play Willy Wonka? seriously, the eclectic nature of the character fits in perfectly with the way that Johnny acts and likes to look in his films. He is unnusually fond of trying to look as outrageos as possible...who better to play the role of such a strange character than the main strange actor in hollywood?
